In this revealing study, Daisuke Miyao explores "the aesthetics of shadow" in Japanese cinema in the first half of the twentieth century. This term, coined by the production designer Yoshino Nobutaka, refers to the perception that shadows add depth and mystery. Miyao analyzes how this notion became naturalized as the representation of beauty in Japanese films, situating Japanese cinema within transnational film history. He examines the significant roles lighting played in distinguishing the styles of Japanese film from American and European film and the ways that lighting facilitated the formulation of a coherent new Japanese cultural tradition. Miyao discusses the influences of Hollywood and German cinema alongside Japanese Kabuki theater lighting traditions and the emergence of neon commercial lighting during this period. He argues that lighting technology in cinema had been structured by the conflicts of modernity in Japan, including capitalist transitions in the film industry, the articulation of Japanese cultural and national identity, and increased subjectivity for individuals. By focusing on the understudied element of film lighting and treating cinematographers and lighting designers as essential collaborators in moviemaking, Miyao offers a rereading of Japanese film history.

The present volume endeavors to make a contribution to contemporary Whitehead studies by clarifying his axiological process metaphysics, including his theory of values, concept of aesthetic experience, and doctrine of beauty, along with his philosophy of art, literature and poetry. Moreover, it establishes an east-west dialogue focusing on how Alfred North Whitehead’s process aesthetics can be clarified by the traditional Japanese Buddhist sense of evanescent beauty. As this east-west dialogue unfolds it is shown that there are many striking points of convergence between Whitehead’s process aesthetics and the traditional Japanese sense of beauty. However, the work especially focuses on two of Whitehead’s aesthetic categories, including the penumbral beauty of darkness and the tragic beauty of perishability, while further demonstrating parallels with the two Japanese aesthetic categories of yûgen and aware. It is clarified how both Whitehead and the Japanese tradition have articulated a poetics of evanescence that celebrates the transience of aesthetic experience and the ephemerality of beauty. Finally it is argued that both Whitehead and Japanese tradition develop an aesthetics of beauty as perishability culminating in a religio-aesthetic vision of tragic beauty and its reconciliation in the supreme ecstasy of peace or nirvana.

This is an open access book. Department of Cultural Study, Universitas Sebelas Maret warmly welcomes you to The International Conference on Cultural Studies (ICCUS). The ICCUS 2024 is the 2nd series since the 1st series was held in 2023.This conference will be held on September 11th, 2024. We encourage participants from all over the world to discuss about “Art, Urban Culture, and Global Ethics”. Contemporary political phenomena influence the city atmosphere. Some time before the General Election in Indonesia, political party contestation has given rise to political segregation which is expressed in poetry, caricatures, party symbols and control of urban space. Furthermore, the city is synonymous with political hegemony and protests. In other parts of the world, war has damaged urban culture, such as in the Middle East, as well as giving rise to growing protests from communities in other world cities. Politically, this gives rise to the term identity politics, a politics based on embracing equality based on the similarities of a group to achieve a certain goal, for example to gain recognition for the group's identity or raise the level and dignity of the group. Identity politics drives the actions of city residents to achieve certain political goals. This identity politics capitalizes on race, ethnicity, language, customs, gender and religion, giving rise to conflicts of interest between city residents. Meanwhile, on the cultural side, a new term has emerged known as "hustle culture", a culture of hard work patterns above the normal threshold with the aim of achieving success in a field. The impact of this "hustle culture" is damage to the social order system, city residents become slaves to technology, and toxic negativity. Both political, social, cultural and economic due to global influences give rise to vertical and horizontal conflicts. There is a need for a global ethic of "cultural diplomacy" as a solution as well as a basic consensus related to binding values, irrevocable standards and moral attitudes, which can be affirmed by all religions, even non-religious ones. There is no survival in the world without global ethics, that peace between social elements will not be created without diplomatic dialogue and cooperation between civilizations with an open mind and tolerance. How do social humanities describe the current changing urban arts, culture and socio-political phenomena from various scientific disciplines? Notable Keynote and Invited Speakers will share their speeches, participants will present their papers, and we will provide a platform to support new opportunities and future collaboration. Your participation and contribution at ICCUS 2024 will be greatly appreciated!
