Before launching his academic career, Mr. Balkaran worked for the African National Congress (Nelson Mandela's ruling party in South Africa) in partnership with the University of Connecticut. His educational background spans from the Presentation College in Trinidad, the University of Connecticut, and Quinnipiac University School of Law, including fellowship at Yale University.

The Critical Black Studies Reader is a ground-breaking volume whose aim is to criticalize and reenvision Black Studies through a critical lens. "Knowledge for Justice: An Ethnic Studies Reader is a joint publication of UCLA's four ethnic studies research centers (American Indian Studies, Asian American Studies, Chicana/o Studies, and African American Studies) and their administrative organization, the Institute of American Cultures.
