Excerpt from The African Slave Trade Upon consideration it appeared that a premature disclosure Of these suggestions might be inconvenient I therefore withhold that part Of my subject for the present, with the intention Of resuming it hereafter; but, although I am disabled from entering into de tail, and consequently from rendering this work as practically useful as I had hoped, it may not be alto gether without benefit to expose, to the public eye, the atrocities which to this day are in full operation in that land Of misery, and to point out the source from which, as I believe, a remedy can alone be hoped for. Excerpt from The African Slave Trade and Its Remedy At home this Society will direct its vigilant atten tion to all which may arise with respect to the traffic in Slaves, and give publicity to whatever may be deemed most essential to produce its suppression. In Africa there are various means whereby it may effectually work to the same end. One of the great impediments at present existing to the advancement of knowledge, is the state of the native languages of Western and Central Africa. Amongst the many nations which inhabit those re gions, there are certainly many different dialects, and not improbably several leading languages. A few only of those languages have yet been reduced into writing, and consequently the difficulty of holding intercourse with the natives and imparting knowledge to them is greatly increased. By the adoption of effectual measures for reducing the principal lan guages of Western and Central Africa into writing, a great obstacle to the diffusion of information will be removed, and facility afforded for the introduction of the truths of Christianity. Excerpt from Cardinal Lavigerie: And the African Slave Trade IN the following pages, which are in substance a Reprint from 7716 Mont/z, I have endeavoured to sketch, under the guidance of those who have been longer in the country, and have a better knowledge Of it than myself, the outlines of a'plan for the settlement of the University Education Question in Ireland. Excerpt from The Reopening of the African Slave Trade Going back to the first step of the tra ic, we find that enor mous iniquities were committed by fire native Africans upon each other, in order to procure slaves for the traders who came from European and American lands. It was then often the case, that villages would go out against each other in strife, and after the con ict the victors would sell the conquered to the slave traders, and thus whole towns would be broken up. Companies of men would often go out and lie in wait near populous villages, and as the inhabitants came straggling out on various errands, would seize and hear them away to the slave ships. Excerpt from The African Slave Trade, Vol. 2: The Remedy In one respect I apprehend no liability to error. With all confidence we may affirm, that nothing per manent will be effected, unless we raise the native mind. It is possible to conceive such an application of force as shall blockade the whole coast, and sweep away every slaver: but should that effort relax, the trade in man would revive. Compulsion, so long as it lasts, may restrain the act, but it will not eradicate the motive. The African will not have ceased to desire, and vehemently to crave, the spirits, the am munition, and the articles of finery and commerce which Europe alone can supply: and these he can Obtain by the Slave Trade, and by the Slave Trade only, while he remains what he is. The pursuit Of man, therefore, is to him not a matter of choice and selection, but of necessity, and after any interval Of constrained abstinence, he will revert to it as the bu siness of his life. Sthis wide superficies contains more than square miles, which is equal to the fourth part of Europe, and a tenth part of the immense continent of Africa. Compared with the United States, these parallels of longitude, would extend from Maine to Missouri. What may be the Foulah population spread over this region, it is impossible to approxi mate. But the low estimate of three inhabitants to the square mile, would give a population of two millions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The History of the Rise, Progress, and Accomplishment of the Abolition of the African Slave-Trade by the British Parliament, Vol. 1 of 2 Quently inculcated benevolence, we have no reason to conclude from any facts they have left us, that persons in their days did any thing more than occasionally relieve an un fortunate object, who might present himself before them, or that, however they might deplore the existence of public evils among them, they joined in associations for their suppression, or that they carried their cha rity, as bodies of men, into other kingdoms. To Christianity alone we are indebted for the new and sublime spectacle of seeing men going beyond the bounds of individual usefulness to each other - of seeing them associate for the extirpation Of private and public misery - and of seeing them carry their charity, as a united brotherhood, into distant lands And in this wider field of benevolence it would be unjust not to confess, that no country has shone with more true lustre than our own, there being scarcely any case of acknowledged affliction, for which some Of her Christian children have not united in an attempt to provide relief.
