Compared with the United States, these parallels of longitude, would extend from Maine to Missouri. What may be the Foulah population spread over this region, it is impossible to approxi mate. Every thing relating to "that subject, thenceforth, acquired a peculiar "value to my mind. All books of travels, maps, "scientific and medical works, that could give me "any new ideas of Africa, were carefully sought "and read, and faithfully studied." Such is the view of Atlantic and Central Africa, presented by this extract, from the first part of a remarkable book which is now being published here, entitled, "Wanderings on the Seas and Shores of Africa," by Dr. D. Francis Bacon. Such, too, is the sentiment of the philosophic Heeren, who says that "geheimnissvoll dunkel," - mysterious darkness, has ever, from the earliest ages, opposed the curiosity of man, to investigate the condition of this continent. The ethnographic portion of Dr. Bacon's work will be contained in the future numbers of his serial. Meanwhile, I propose, by anticipation, to submit to the National Institute, some remarks upon that widely spread people of Soudan, or Central Africa, called Foulahs or Fellatahs. Throughout the whole extent of Nigritia or Negro-land, the Foulahs undoubtedly occupy preeminence. They are found spread over a vast geographic region of 28 to 30 degrees in longitude, 1500 miles - and of 7 to 10 in latitude, or 500 miles. Excerpt from The African Slave Trade and Its Remedy At home this Society will direct its vigilant atten tion to all which may arise with respect to the traffic in Slaves, and give publicity to whatever may be deemed most essential to produce its suppression. In Africa there are various means whereby it may effectually work to the same end. One of the great impediments at present existing to the advancement of knowledge, is the state of the native languages of Western and Central Africa. Amongst the many nations which inhabit those re gions, there are certainly many different dialects, and not improbably several leading languages. A few only of those languages have yet been reduced into writing, and consequently the difficulty of holding intercourse with the natives and imparting knowledge to them is greatly increased. By the adoption of effectual measures for reducing the principal lan guages of Western and Central Africa into writing, a great obstacle to the diffusion of information will be removed, and facility afforded for the introduction of the truths of Christianity. The magnitude of the operation cannot be understood by the general public in Europe. Every household in Upper Egypt and in the Delta was dependent upon slave service the fields in the Soudan were cultivated by slaves; the women in the harems of both rich and middle class were attended by slaves the poorer Arab woman's ambition was to. Possess a slave in fact, Egyptian society without slaves would be like a carriage devoid of wheels - it could not proceed. The slaves were generally well treated by their owners; the brutality lay in their capture, with the attendant lawlessness and murders; but that was far away, and the slave proprietors of Egypt had not witnessed the miseries of the weary marches of the distant caravans. They purchased slaves, taught them their duties, fed and clothed them - they were happy; why should the Khedive of Egypt prohibit the traffic and thus disturb every household in his territory?
