A masterful hybrid of nature writing and cultural studies that investigates our connection with deer—from mythology to biology, from forests to cities, from coexistence to control and extermination—and invites readers to contemplate the paradoxes of how humans interact with and shape the natural world Deer have been an important part of the world that humans occupy for millennia. They’re one of the only large animals that can thrive in our presence. In the 21st century, our relationship is full of contradictions: We hunt and protect them, we cull them from suburbs while making them an icon of wilderness, we see them both as victims and as pests. But there is no doubt that we have a connection to deer: in mythology and story, in ecosystems biological and digital, in cities and in forests. Delving into the historical roots of these tangled attitudes and how they play out in the present, Erika Howsare observes scientists capture and collar fawns, hunters show off their trophies, a museum interpreter teaching American history while tanning a deer hide, an animal-control officer collecting the carcasses of deer killed by sharpshooters, and a woman bottle-raising orphaned fawns in her backyard. As she reports these stories, Howsare’s eye is always on the bigger picture: Why do we look at deer in the ways we do, and what do these animals reveal about human involvement in the natural world? For readers of H is for Hawk and Fox & I, The Age of Deer offers a unique and intimate perspective on a very human relationship.

Author Jim Heffelfinger presents a wide array of data in a reader-friendly, well-organized way. With a clear mission to make his information not only helpful, but entertaining and attractive as well, each chapter focuses on a specific aspect of understanding deer. The clear, detailed table of contents will help readers flip right to the section they want to investigate. Not just hunters, but anyone who is interested in the deer of West Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, southern California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, northern Mexico, or tribal lands will find this book to be an indispensable resource for understanding these familiar and fascinating animals. “Very few books on the subject of deer in any particular region lend themselves to being complete. Jim Heffelfinger’s book breaks the mold. It is by far the most comprehensive book on mule deer and white-tailed deer in the southwestern part of the United States, including Plains portions of Texas, Colorado, and New Mexico, I’ve ever read. Everything you ever wanted to know about these two deer species can be found in its pages . . . All of this under one cover and written in a style easy enough for the layperson to understand, but scientific enough for the professional biologist . . . Deer of the Southwest is a pleasure to read and should be part of every deer enthusiast’s library.”—Great Plains Research “An important reference for anyone interested in deer in the Southwest—managers and enthusiasts alike. Both enlightening and instructive, Deer of the Southwest is the ultimate source for understanding the history, management, and issues facing this resource. Jim Heffelfinger has solidified his reputation as the premier authority on deer in this region.”—Barry Hale, deer program manager, New Mexico Department of Game and Fish

Zeke’s Theory: Unlocking the Whitetail Antler Growth Process By: Eric V. Zimmerman I have been told I have an obsessive type personally, and after reading my book, I think you all will agree. I became obsessed with aging whitetails in my teens, being shown by one of the PGC biologists what the 18-month-old’s tooth looks like along with a brief description on how to use tooth wear and dentine thickness to determine the ages of deer above 18 months of age. My civilian work life has always involved the processing of deer, and if I cut off the antlers of a buck brought in to be processed, I would slice open the cheek, pry open its mouth, and age that buck. I would also weigh the carcasses, and a few patterns did start to form between age, weight, and antler size, and it was not supporting what is considered common knowledge about bucks and how their antlers grow. In 1998, I shot this eight-point and in 2004my daughter shot this cute little six-point. I have been studying these two bucks ever since, believing that the difference in the size of the antlers between these two bucks is based on the month they were born in and wondering in theory if the smaller buck’s antler size ever catches up to the larger buck in the following years. What the evidence is showing is that in order to grow record book bucks, the adage that it takes a three-legged stool of nutrition, genetics, and age is incomplete. Rather, what it takes is a four-legged chair with the animal’s birth date being added to the list of nutrition, genetics, and age. The information I'm providing will be very helpful to game managers who are looking to grow record book class whitetails, as my evidence will show that the antlers of bucks born late in the fawning season will never catch up or reach their full potential, and it is doubtful that they will ever have more than eight points or score over 120 in their lifetime. One of the hottest new tools for hunters, the scouting camera has become a deer hunter's best friend. Scouting cameras, triggered by heat and motion, provide clues to the habits and whereabouts of deer traveling through your favorite hunting area. Wildlife watchers and families are using these cameras, too, because they enjoy knowing what passes by when no one is around. The authors give advice on how to buy the right camera, how to set it up in the optimal location, how to encourage wildlife to visit, and how to interpret the photos you get. Spies in the Deer Woods is full of ideas on how to use these cameras to scout out your next big buck or bear.

The Deer and the Tiger is Schaller's detailed account of the ecology and behavior of Bengal tigers and four species of the hoofed mammals on which they prey, based on his observations in India's Kanha National Park. "This book is a treasure house of biological information and it is also a delight to read. . . . Excellent phoographs accompany the text."—Robert K. Enders, American Scientist "The one book that has been my greatest source of inspiration is The Deer and the Tiger by George Schaller, based on the first ever scientific field study of the tiger. . . . This book is written by a scientist, but speaks from the heart. . . . It reveals startling information on feeding habitats, territorial behaviour, and the nuances that make up the language of the forest; you become totally immersed in the world of the tiger. . . . For all of us who work in tiger conservation, this book is the bible."—Valmik Thapar, BBC Wildlife
