Excerpt from The Agricultural Situation, Vol. 13: A Brief Summary of Economic Conditions; January 1, 1929 The past season has not been particularly favorable to New England farmers. Most crops have produced only moderate yields and are being sold at only fair prices at best. Potatoes: A total of bushels of potatoes were finally produced in the New England States. This total does not differ materially from the production Of a year ago, and average. A large acreage was planted and yields were comparatively light, however. Much of the potato crop is of poor quality. Potato prices have been unusually low. This is due largely to the fact that the crop for the country, as a whole, is the largest on record, totaling bushels. At present conditions, car-lot movement of potatoes in New England may be expected to fall short of the totals of a year ago, due largely to poor quality and low prices being received for the crop. Excerpt from The Agricultural Situation, Vol. 13: A Brief Summary of Economic Conditions; April 1, 1929 The latter part of March brought some favorable weather through out much of the North, melted the snow, dried up the land, and permitted a start of farm work. A considerable part of the oats acreage has been sown and preparations are going forward for the Whole crop program. In the South, the extremely heavy rains con tinned to hold up farm work and caused damaging floods in many river valleys. Winter wheat is starting up rapidly. Farmers generally report that less winter-wheat acreage than usual will be abandoned this spring. Fruit trees have shown about normal progress, early varieties being now in bloom well up into the North. A few days ago this bureau completed its annual inquiry from about farmers who reported their intentions, as of March 1, regard ing the planting of spring crops. No information was collected on cotton, since that 1s prohibited by law, but of the other main crops it appears that the intention of farmers 1s to plant a slightly greater (2 per cent) total acreage than was grown last year. Excerpt from The Agricultural Situation, Vol. 13: A Brief Summary of Economic Conditions; December 1, 1929 The most noteworthy feature of the egg market during November was its failure to show any evidence of weakness at the time recent interruption of confidence in the general business situation. The failure of egg prices to follow the declines registered in so man other farm products may be attributed very largely to the firm pos1 tion of the trade In relation to current and reserve supplies, both being considerably lighter for the month of November than for the same month of 1928. Production of eggs so far this year has been light, and except for intermittent periods, weekly receipts at the principal markets have reflected this condition by being smaller than for the same period last year. Because of the light production, it has been impossible to accumulate very heavy supplies in storage as reserves against the fall and winter months when current receipts are never sufficient to care for all requirements. Some improvement has been reported in the principal production areas, although such improvement has not as yet had time to influence market conditions to any appreciable extent, as receipts so far this month have been approximately 13 per cent less than for the corresponding period in November, 1928. Prices are ranging around several cents per dozen higher than a year ago, and while this higher selling level has caused some slacken ing up of demand, outlets have been sufficient to absorb the rather restricted offerings with a very close clearance on all grades. The demand for fancy fresh stock has been especially good, and in most cases such eggs have commanded a premium. While some rather sharp advances in prices have occurred Within the past few weeks, indications are that the peak prices for the year have been reached and passed. There may be further advances on top grades, but the major trend from now on should be lower. The cold-storage holdings of eggs continue to Show a shortage as compared with both last year and the 5-year average. According to the November 1 report, eggs in storage on that date amounted to cases, with holdings of 000 cases on the same date a year ago, and a 5-year average of cases. This represents a relative shortage of 1 000 cases under last year and a shortage of cases compared with the 5-year average. The October reduction in storage stocks was somewhat less than was expected by the trade which apparently made no allowance for an increased resistance on the part of buyers as a result of high prices for storage eggs. _owners of such stocks, however, are said to be making no aggressive effort to press sales, being of the opinion that unless receipts of fresh stock increase more rapidly than is expected, the present rate of withdrawals, if continued, will closely clear the larger part of the reserves by the end of the storage season. Excerpt from The Agricultural Situation, Vol. 13: A Brief Summary of Economic Conditions; November 1, 1929 It is reported that in some sections condenseries are getting a little overflow from local fluid milk markets, but the extent to which this is happening is not indicated. Fluid markets, in general, are firm. Taking the situation as a whole, the tone is about steady. Produc tion is running lighter, but stocks on hand are heavy and fully ample. Most of the uneasiness is apparently due to the latter, which supple ments the usual uncertainty at this season of the year. L. M. Davis, Division of Dairy and Poultry Products, B. A. E. Excerpt from The Agricultural Situation, Vol. 13: A Brief Summary of Economic Conditions; May 1, 1929 Several weeks must pass yet before the flush season of dairy pro duction arrives, but already there is the usual scurrying around for facts relating to probable developments, or even suggestions of what may take place. While it is too early to talk about definite tendencies, it is possible at this time to round up the more pertinent factors bear ing on the situation. Excerpt from The Agricultural Situation, Vol. 13: A Brief Summary of Economic Conditions; October 1, 1929 Egg prices in September have shown more than the usual seasonal advances. During the first three weeks of the month, this year, prices at New York have shown advances of 3 to 3v cents on the top grades, and% to 1v cents on lower grade eggs. Last year, during the entire month, the better grades advanced only one-half of a cent, with the less desirable grades remaining practically unchanged. AS a result prices are now ranging 5v to 7 cents above a year ago, whereas at the outset of the month the margin was 2v to 4 cents in favor of 1929. The advances this year compare somewhat more favorably With 1927, which In many respects was a season comparable to the current one. Practically all elements of the trade agree that the look ahead remains favorable and market prospects firm, at least until such time as fall receipts may be affected by the increased crop Of pullets now on farms, or the current favorable level of consumption may be adversely affected by the relatively high-price levels. Receipts at the leading terminal markets have, thus far, fallen somewhat short of the comparable period in September last year, the difference being somewhat more than 1 per cent. But since arrivals during the early part of the month exceeded last year, it is evident that there has been considerable dropping off In receipts since that time. It also appears that this tendency will continue in force through the few remaining days of September, and that by the end of the month the shortage as compared With last year will be greater than the 1 per cent seen to date. In general, supplies of the better-grade eggs have been light, possibly a smaller percentage than usual of the total receipts falling into this class. The lower grades have been ample for the demand, and during the first part of the month, supplies accumulated somewhat and had to be sent to storage to be worked out later. The period of the use of storage eggs is at hand. Withdrawals from storage began to exceed movement into storage early In August, but it has only been since the first week In September that the daily net out-movement has reached material proportions. Total United States holdings on September 1 were reported as cases, as cases September 1,1928, mid the 5-year Member 1 average of 9, cases. The shortage in storage this yeai relative to last was thus 1 000 cases, and relative to the 5-year average 1 024 000 cases. On August 1, these relative shortages were cases and 1, 114 000 cases, respectively. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Agricultural Situation, Vol. 13: A Brief Summary of Economic Conditions; September 1, 1929 Egg prices continue to advance at somewhat more than the usual seasonal rate. During the first 26 days of August, prices of fresh western extras at New York advanced 515 to 6 cents per dozen, with fresh western firsts advancing 3 to 3% cents. Last year, for the same period, fresh western extras advanced 3% to 4 cents and fresh western firsts 1 to 2 cents. The general price level remains well above a year ago, the margin varying from 3 to 5 cents on various grades. Of course this higher price level reflects to a considerable extent the extremely light storage reserves, which began to be accumulated late and never equaled those of 1928. But to a considerable extent it also reflects a very favorable level of consumption. This is evident when it is considered that market receipts since April have exceeded those of last year, that storage accumulations have not kept pace with last year in face of these heavier receipts, and that prices have been on a higher level than a year ago throughout the season. Excerpt from The Agricultural Situation, Vol. 13: A Brief Summary of Economic Conditions; March 1, 1929 There are various reasons why such conditions prevail at this particular season. In the first place, we are at this time of year winding up an Old season, and a new season is ahead with all sorts of possibilities in store. There is always the desire to clean up on the old season before starting in on the new. Then, current production is a factor, for while we usually expect winter dairying to exert its influence along In December, the extent of the Increase is more or less uncertain, depending upon weather, feed costs, and the prices of dairy products themselves. Other factors making for uncertainty are the storage situation and the foreign situation. Coming to the immediate situation, the following are important facts. Winter production has been fairly heavy, and latest reports indicate that it is holding Up well. The last estimate for the entire country covers January and indicates an increase in butter production of almost 2 per cent over January, 1928. There have been Increases reported each succeeding month since August. Despite increased current supplies from this source, storage stocks have moved well, and the butter storage situation itself 1s generally regarded as satis factory. Absence of imports has been an important factor. Some shipments arrived early In the winter, but no important quantities have arrived since. New York butter prices have been some 9 to 10 cents higher than foreign prices, along with which condition, however, is the fact that a 12 cent tariff duty Is in effect. The cheese market is apparently recovering somewhat from the jolt of last month, when prices dropped to the lowest January level for some years. Canned milk markets are steady to firm, and fluid milk markets show no material change from the fairly favorable position of last month. L. M. Davis, Division of Dairy and Poultry Products, B. A. E. Excerpt from The Agricultural Situation, Vol. 13: A Brief Summary of Economic Conditions; August 1, 1929 The general picture of crop conditions now at mid season is a rather uneven picture. Most of the cultivated crops have made fair growth during the past month, but both corn and potatoes are late in many sections and show wide variation in condition. Haying and cultiva tion have been held up by local rains through the Central States, whereas wheat has suffered severely from dry weather in the West, as have local areas in the East. The total acreage of crops harvested this season will apparently be about the same as last season. The composite condition of all crops last month was indicated as about 4 per cent below the recent 10-year average. Wheat harvest is now going forward in the North. The most spec tsoular development of the past month has been the change in the wheat situation. The drought in our Plains States and in Canada so reduced the crop prospect for wheat that in one month the Chicago prices advanced nearly 30 cents a bushel. Prices have declined some 'what, however, during the past week or two. Hard winter wheat, which is normally our chief export class, was estimated last month at nearly bushels less than a year ago. The spring wheat crop was also estimated at nearly bushels below last year and the reports indicate further damage to the crop since the July estimate. For those growers who can make a crop, the prospect is much more cheering than it was a month ago. Haying is well along, with a substantially larger crop than last year. The clover and alfalfa meadows, particularly in the Central and Eastern States, are again back in shape after the extensive winterkilling of last year. While ample hay is assured, however, dairymen and other feeders are beginning to expect higher-priced feed grains this fall. Excerpt from The Agricultural Situation, Vol. 13: A Brief Summary of Economic Conditions; June 1, 1929 California citrus-fruit prospects are only slightly less favorable than a year ago. Florida has been suffering from drought and, as yet, there has been only a light set of citrus fruits. On May 1 the condition of Florida oranges and grapefruit was the lowest for that date in 12 years, indicating only two-thirds to three-fourths Of an average yield per tree. Condition of oranges was 61 per cent and grapefruit 56 per cent Of normal in Florida. Production and shipments of citrus fruit in that State will be reduced also as a result of the Mediterranean fruit - fly quarantine. N O definite figures were yet available on the condition of the apple crop, but reports indicate that production in some sections probably will be lighter than in 1928. Assuming the usual alternation of light and heavy crops, this should be a year of fewer apples than last season. Prices were advancing slightly in some terminal markets as the 1928 29 season neared an end. The commercial cold - storage holdings Of apples on May 1 were about 9 per cent less than a year ago and about 20 per cent below the average figure for this time Of the year, showing that the supply was cleaning up rapidly.
