Excerpt from The Agricultural Situation, Vol. 13: A Brief Summary of Economic Conditions; August 1, 1929 The general picture of crop conditions now at mid season is a rather uneven picture. Most of the cultivated crops have made fair growth during the past month, but both corn and potatoes are late in many sections and show wide variation in condition. Haying and cultiva tion have been held up by local rains through the Central States, whereas wheat has suffered severely from dry weather in the West, as have local areas in the East. The total acreage of crops harvested this season will apparently be about the same as last season. The composite condition of all crops last month was indicated as about 4 per cent below the recent 10-year average. Wheat harvest is now going forward in the North. The most spec tsoular development of the past month has been the change in the wheat situation. The drought in our Plains States and in Canada so reduced the crop prospect for wheat that in one month the Chicago prices advanced nearly 30 cents a bushel. Prices have declined some 'what, however, during the past week or two. Hard winter wheat, which is normally our chief export class, was estimated last month at nearly bushels less than a year ago. The spring wheat crop was also estimated at nearly bushels below last year and the reports indicate further damage to the crop since the July estimate. For those growers who can make a crop, the prospect is much more cheering than it was a month ago. Haying is well along, with a substantially larger crop than last year. The clover and alfalfa meadows, particularly in the Central and Eastern States, are again back in shape after the extensive winterkilling of last year. While ample hay is assured, however, dairymen and other feeders are beginning to expect higher-priced feed grains this fall. Excerpt from The Agricultural Situation, Vol. 13: A Brief Summary of Economic Conditions, July 1, 1929 If there is anything which stands out particularly in the dairy situa tion this month, it is the continued steadiness of the markets. The flush season is now well under way and production is showing changes each week, but when these are considered in relation to what has oc curred other seasons, and what dairy interests have anticipated would occur this year, the Iiet result is that price changes have been slight. Butter prices, of course, are a little lower than last year, although the June average promises at this writing (june 25) to be very close to June, 1928. It has been a long time since prices have followed as steady course as during the latter part of May and the early part of this month. As a matter of fact, from May 13 to June 7, a period of almost four weeks, the wholesale price of 92-score butter at New York City was unchanged at 43 cents. There is seldom much variation between high and low prices during the month of June, but an un changed price over so long a period, part of which was in May, is very unusual. Cheese prices have also shown very little change during recent weeks. Quoted prices for principal styles of American cheese handled on Wisconsin cheese boards have not changed since the first week of April. The 1929 situation, therefore, is a direct contrast to the usual changes which occur to both butter arid cheese prices during the spring and early summer months. A general tendency for butter prices to become more stable was in evidence throughout all of last year, so that 1929 may be following along in what will be a permanent change. Just What the factors are which have caused this is hard to say, but some important changes in the organization of the dairy industry, as well as changes in methods of merchandising, during recent years, may have contributed. Excerpt from The Agricultural Situation, Vol. 26: A Brief Summary of Economic Conditions; March 1942 It should be a point of pride with every good American not to hoard or to waste food. Consumers should buy more of commodities which are plentiful in supply. Thus, they can assist farmers and stimulate the output of larger supplies by directing their purchases to commodities that are relatively abundant. From 'time to time the Department of Agriculture and the Office of Price Administration will draw the attention of consumers to commodities which are in relative abundance, and to desirable shifts in food habits. Excerpt from The Agricultural Situation, Vol. 25: A Brief Summary of Economic Conditions; November 1941 The job of 1942 production will not even be well started until national goals are broken d0wn into practicable jobs for every farmer in'the country. Sign-ups must be reconsidered in terms of the best contribution to goals that can be made from the productive resources of each farm. Some farms cannot expand, and their share of the defense effort will be to hold production at present levels. Better situated farms must carry the load. Excerpt from The Agricultural Situation, Vol. 25: A Brief Summary of Economic Conditions; August 1941 Cotton prices recently were the highest in 11 years. The 85 percent of parity loan rate made mandatory by 1941 legislation has been the principal price-stimulating influence in the re cent rise, but other price-supporting factors include a record high level of domestic consumption, a reduced acreage planted to cotton in 1941 and generally unfavorable progress of the crop. Mill consumption of cotton for the first 11 months of the current season totaled million bales compared with a year earlier and an average of for the comparable months of the 5 years 1935 - 39. Although busi ness in cotton textiles recently has been restricted, large order backlogs are still on the books of producers and raw cotton consumption is expected to continue around recent record levels at least for several more months. In contrast to the large increase in domes tic consumption, cotton exports during the first 11 months of the current season fell 83 percent, from approxi mately 6 to 1 million bales. Excerpt from The Agricultural Situation, Vol. 25: A Brief Summary of Economic Conditions; October 1941 To meet fully these prospective agricultural exports in 1942 will require about twice as large a volume of agricultural products as were exported in 1941. Around three-fourths of the total will go to the British. The total volume of exports still would be low, however, relative to most other rec'ent years. HE prospective 1942 increases in farm product exports do not affect appreciably such products as cotton and wheat. Exports of tobacco (an other agricultural product for which the foreign market ordinarily is quite important) will be increased to some extent in 1942, but may not return to pre-war volume. Such increases in tobacco exports as may occur will be from the crops of past years rather than the crop harvested in 1941. The 1942 export needs for pork products and eggs are estimated to be about 3 times those of 1941, for dairy products and canned fruits about twice as large as in and for lard and dried fruits about 1 times as large. Canned vegetable and dry-bean exports also are expected to continue large. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
