ANTHEM AWARD WINNER • NAMED A FINANCIAL TIMES BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR 2024 AI is on the brink of dominating our lives, threating our privacy and human future—if we don’t take action now. In The Algorithm, Emmy‑award winning Wall Street Journal and Guardian contributor Hilke Schellmann delivers a shocking and illuminating exposé on one of the most pressing civil rights issues of our time: how AI has quietly, and mostly out of sight, taken over the world of work. Schellmann takes readers on a journalistic detective story, meeting job applicants and employees who have been subjected to these technologies, playing AI-based video games that companies use for hiring, and investigating algorithms that scan our online activity to construct personality profiles— including if we are prone to self -harm. She convinces whistleblowers to share results of faulty AI -tools, and tests algorithms that analyze job candidates’ facial expressions and tools that predict from our voices if we are anxious or depressed. Schellmann finds employees whose every keystrokes were tracked and AI that analyzes group discussions or even predicts when someone may leave a company. Her reporting reveals in detail how much employers already know about us and how little we know about the technologies that are used on us. The Algorithm tells an even bigger story with Schellmann discovering faulty algorithms and systemic discrimination of women and people of color, which may have already harmed thousands of job seekers and employees. It advocates to go beyond these tools to more thoughtfully consider how we hire, promote, and treat human beings—with or without AI. As Schellmann emphasizes, we need to decide how we build algorithmic tools in any industry and what protections we need to put in place in an AI-driven world. Hilke Schellmann is an Emmy-award winning investigative reporter and journalism professor at NYU. Her work covering artificial intelligence has been published in The New York Times, The Guardian, the MIT Technology Review, and The Wall Street Journal, where she led a team investigating how AI is changing our lives. She has also reported for NPR’s Planet Money podcast on fake online reviews and her investigation for VICE on HBO was a finalist for a Peabody Award. Her PBS Frontline documentary Outlawed in Pakistan premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and was honored with an Emmy award.

Most Anticipated by Foreign Policy • Globe and Mail • Publishers Weekly • Next Big Idea Club Must Read April Books “Will stand as a classic.” – Christopher Leonard "Riveting, shocking, and full of revelations." - Bryan Burrough From veteran Amazon reporter for The Wall Street Journal, The Everything War is the first untold, devastating exposé of Amazon's endless strategic greed, from destroying Main Street to remaking corporate power, in pursuit of total domination, by any means necessary. In 2017, Lina Khan published a paper that accused Amazon of being a monopoly, having grown so large, and embedded in so many industries, it was akin to a modern-day Standard Oil. Unlike Rockefeller’s empire, however, Bezos’s company had grown voraciously without much scrutiny. In fact, for over twenty years, Amazon had emerged as a Wall Street darling and its “customer obsession” approach made it indelibly attractive to consumers across the globe. But the company was not benevolent; it operated in ways that ensured it stayed on top. Lina Khan’s paper would light a fire in Washington, and in a matter of years, she would become the head of the FTC. In 2023, the FTC filed a monopoly lawsuit against Amazon in what may become one of the largest antitrust cases in the 21st century. With unparalleled access, and having interviewed hundreds of people – from Amazon executives to competitors to small businesses who rely on its marketplace to survive – Mattioli exposes how Amazon was driven by a competitive edge to dominate every industry it entered, bulldozed all who stood in its way, reshaped the retail landscape, transformed how Wall Street evaluates companies, and altered the very nature of the global economy. It has come to control most of online retail, and uses its own sellers’ data to compete with them through Amazon’s own private label brands. Millions of companies and governmental agencies use AWS, paying hefty fees for the service. And, the company has purposefully avoided collecting taxes for years, exploited partners, and even copied competitors—leveraging its power to extract whatever it can, at any cost. It has continued to gain market share in disparate areas, from media to logistics and beyond. Most companies dominate one or two industries; Amazon now leads in several. And all of this was by design. The Everything War is the definitive, inside story of how it grew into one of the most powerful and feared companies in the world – and why this lawsuit opens a window into the most consequential business story of our times.

Her creation, EROS, promises a personalized digital utopia, seamlessly integrating human emotion into the online experience. But beneath the sleek veneer of progress lies a chilling deception. EROS is not connecting users; it’s controlling them. Secretly woven into the fabric of a popular dating app, the algorithm manipulates millions, turning love and connection into commodities. Sarah's world shatters as she uncovers this insidious betrayal. The technology she birthed is now a weapon, and she must dismantle it. Hunted by her own creation, Sarah finds an unlikely ally in James Foster, a cynical investigative journalist whose relentless pursuit of truth mirrors her own desperate need for answers. Together, they plunge into a treacherous world of corporate espionage and government conspiracies, where trust is a dangerous luxury and every digital footprint is a potential trap. They uncover a chilling master plan, a future where human relationships are meticulously orchestrated, where love itself is reduced to an algorithm. Their pursuit of truth becomes a fight for survival, a desperate race against an enemy that can anticipate their every move. As the lines between hunter and hunted blur, they must confront not only external threats but also their own internal demons. Can they disrupt the algorithm and reclaim the sanctity of human emotion before it’s too late, or are they merely pawns in a larger game, their connection another carefully orchestrated illusion? "There is today a pronounced and accelerated convergence in architecture. This convergence is occurring by doers not thinkers; in practice not academia; in building design, fabrication, and construction. It is about solution-centric individuals engaged in real time problem solving, not in abstractions. The nature of this convergence, where things are converging and what that means for architecture, is the subject of this book." —from the Introduction Those working in architecture and engineering feel pressure to work faster, at lower cost, while maintaining a high level of innovation and quality. At the same time, emergent tools and processes make this possible. Convergence is about the firms, teams and people who thrive in this environment as a result of their ability to creatively combine and innovate. It seeks to answer several timely questions: What are the tools and work processes that are converging? How are individuals and organizations converging their tools and work processes? What challenges and benefits are they seeing? What is the ultimate endgame of this convergence? What skillsets and mindsets would someone need to develop to work effectively in this changing environment? What are the implications of convergence on the role of the designer, and on design? On how we design, build, fabricate, and construct? On how we work? The book explains how convergence relates to, but ultimately differs from integration, consolidation, multi-tasking, automation, and other forms of optimization. The practice-based research builds upon the author’s research in BIM and in the collaborative leveraging of data in design and fabrication. As an investigation and meditation on the impact of technology on the education and making of design professionals Convergence explains what is happening in the world of design, and discusses the implications for the future of education, training and practice.

There are many attempts to explain the existence of the universe. Even the observable universe around us is filled with unknowns and numerous unexplainable phenomena, let alone the unobservable universe. Each and every theory proposed is just trying to find an explanation for the existence of the observable universe around us, ignoring the fact that it is potentially possible there is an invisible universe which reveals itself as we find newer ways to observe it. We need to first and foremost be able to abstract this universe as we observe it to be just a representation of something else underneath that is projected as this world around us by our descriptive thoughts. Then and only then can we find an explanation that is inclusive of everything that the universe is. As far as we search for the origin of just these appearances of descriptive thoughts, we will only dabble with physics, chemistry, mathematics and computations. It should be recognised that Wolfram introduces a very good concept. Simple things recurse to form complex worlds. But this without the correct transformation remains simply a recognisable pattern. How does this recognisable pattern go on to become this complex appearance of reality that we observe around us is up in the air. The ancient Sanskrit literature has an in-depth explanation of how this reality around us works and how it has come to be this. It just needs the correct context around which to translate these texts to understand it. For a long time I wondered what would be the best way to explain the algorithm of the universe as seen by the ancients and explained in the Sanskrit literature. I could explain it by using translation of the Sanskrit verses in a certain order. But I find that they do not take the reader on the journey that is necessary to understand and form the correct thoughts to understand the working of and creation of this reality around us. I thought I would write it as a description of astrology i.e., jyothiSha which, if we look at from the ancient view, is actually a science that tells us how to control the distribution of seeking which drives the formation of this reality around us and hence control this reality itself. But, I find that the term has been highly mangled with all sorts of meaning associated with it. I find, even if there was a very beautiful science explained it becomes very difficult to break these pre-conceived perceptions to get the reader to read objectively and understand. Finally, I have decided the best way is to use the computers that we have created and the AI algorithms that we are trying to code as the best way to describe it, because this was my primary driver to want to understand the Sanskrit literature and to debug the working of the universe. The underlying curiosity to understand why and how the AI that we write does not even seem to be a “fake imitation” of the working of the universe around us. The underlying curiosity to understand how this reality around me is so completely immersive while the virtual reality that we create does not even come near this immersive experience that we have with reality. The curiosity to understand if it is possible for us to create a hardware and software that comes even a little bit close to the kind of intelligence, knowledge and beauty in the algorithm of this reality around us. This has been my driver to decode and understand the Sanskrit literature. So, I find that is the best way to describe the algorithm. In this book I explain the algorithms proposed in the Sanskrit literatures for the working of this reality around us. I also compare these concepts to what we have currently present in computers and explain how they are different from what is explained in these books and why what we have in computers are not sufficient to create the AI that we want to create. Further, I try to put down my thoughts on how or what can be done to create a system that can be used to implement a AI system.

A scrutiny of how algorithm has been widely used in order to perform any task has been done here. The step-by-step solution to any problem is an algorithm. The set of rules and steps which should be followed so that the task is performed smoothly, is called an algorithm. It is the guidelines presented/ listed in a systematic way which is required while performing the task. The era of modernization where computer holds almost all the importance is also based on an algorithm. There are multiple problem-solving operations which require certain guidelines so that the goals are achieved. The languages of the computer which builds a relation between machine and humans work on these algorithms. No wonder the world knows what to do and how but the computer needs guidelines! The instructions provided by the user makes it possible for the computer to work out the problem-solving statement. There have to be some standards of the algorithm that the device should understand. The algorithm is not only used in computers but it also holds great utilization in cooking and mathematics.
