Inside the epic quest to find life on the water-rich moons at the outer reaches of the solar system Where is the best place to find life beyond Earth? We often look to Mars as the most promising site in our solar system, but recent scientific missions have revealed that some of the most habitable real estate may actually lie farther away. Beneath the frozen crusts of several of the small, ice-covered moons of Jupiter and Saturn lurk vast oceans that may have existed for as long as Earth, and together may contain more than fifty times its total volume of liquid water. Could there be organisms living in their depths? Alien Oceans reveals the science behind the thrilling quest to find out. Kevin Peter Hand is one of today's leading NASA scientists, and his pioneering research has taken him on expeditions around the world. In this captivating account of scientific discovery, he brings together insights from planetary science, biology, and the adventures of scientists like himself to explain how we know that oceans exist within moons of the outer solar system, like Europa, Titan, and Enceladus. He shows how the exploration of Earth's oceans is informing our understanding of the potential habitability of these icy moons, and draws lessons from what we have learned about the origins of life on our own planet to consider how life could arise on these distant worlds. Alien Oceans describes what lies ahead in our search for life in our solar system and beyond, setting the stage for the transformative discoveries that may await us.

The Portal is a first-person story of an intergalactic war and the survival of the human race. My home is in a solar system 490 Light Years away from Earth. I have been sent to Earth, where I have assumed the name of Adam Zabel, to find and destroy the Others who are a rival alien species who wish to foster a nuclear war that will destroy humanity, enabling the Others to re-populate the planet. This evil species wants the Earth's most precious element; water and will do anything to get it.While I have tracked one of the Others to New York City, I meet an attractive reporter from California who becomes integral to my ultimate mission. Christine Laska works for the New York Post in Los Angeles and is in the Big Apple to gain some investigative experience. She meets me by accident, but I will forever change her life. We form a friendship that evolves into romance while Chrissy is investigating the murder of a person in the Hayden Planetarium that mystifies the New York Police Department because of the disappearance of the body. After I am able to kill one of my preys at the Planetarium, Chrissy and I flee New York City to my beach front home in Santa Monica, California while we track a second Other who is within weeks of gathering unprecedented power following a surprising Presidential election. The FBI, multiple Federal agencies and a secret government group are closing in on what they now know is an alien species that must be captured alive or destroyed. As the Other maneuvers into power that would cause a world war resulting in a nuclear winter that will destroy humanity, I am the only being on the planet that can stop the total destruction of the human species on Earth. Can I succeed? Will I be in time? In the second book, I return. After ten years I come back to Earth to try to stop the Others from causing a deadly pandemic that if not stopped will cause the complete destruction of humanity. The Portal is a combination of The Doomsday Portal and The Genesis Portal books in one.

Convergent Evolution On Earth written by George R. McGhee, Jr. and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-10-15 with Science categories.

An analysis of patterns of convergent evolution on Earth that suggests where we might look for similar convergent forms on other planets. Why does a sea lily look like a palm tree? And why is a sea lily called a “lily” when it is a marine animal and not a plant? Many marine animals bear a noticeable similarity in form to land-dwelling plants. And yet these marine animal forms evolved in the oceans first; land plants independently and convergently evolved similar forms much later in geologic time. In this book, George McGhee analyzes patterns of convergent evolution on Earth and argues that these patterns offer lessons for the search for life elsewhere in the universe. Our Earth is a water world; 71 percent of the earth's surface is covered by water. The fossil record shows that multicellular life on dry land is a new phenomenon; for the vast majority of the earth's history—3,500 million years of its 4,560 million years of existence—complex life existed only in the oceans. Explaining that convergent biological evolution occurs because of limited evolutionary pathways, McGhee examines examples of convergent evolution in forms of feeding, immobility and mobility, defense, and organ systems. McGhee suggests that the patterns of convergent evolution that we see in our own water world indicate the potential for similar convergent forms in other water worlds. We should search for extraterrestrial life on water worlds, and for technological life on water worlds with continental landmasses.

What does it mean to be human? This is a fictional story that tries to look at who we are? How we see ourselves? How would a naïve out of this World advanced Alien culture see us? A child is born with some basic instincts. Then the training and indoctrination begins. Successful parents and society create a citizen who is considered a successful member of the society. All societies and cultures have their own rules and traditions that are considered proper and appropriate. Deviation from what is considered normal and proper is not acceptable, requiring corrective action. To one culture, harvesting a whale for its blubber will sustain their people for another year. To another culture, killing a whale for food is a deplorable, vile act. Historically, for some peoples, a barbecued white missionary was a feast. He was a misguided, ignorant man, God lives in the volcano. God can be seen and heard when he is displeased. Knowledge and technology influence culture. The author has endeavored to look at humanity with all our virtues and inequities.
