During his historic visit to the United States in October 2015, Pope Francis encouraged the nation’s bishops to avoid harsh and divisive language, reminding instead that “only the enduring allure of goodness and love remains truly convincing.” These words provide as fine a summary of the Holy Father’s visit (and of Jorge Bergoglio’s papal ministry) as will be found anywhere. In Washington, New York, and Philadelphia, Pope Francis touched the hearts and consciences of Catholics, as well as people of all faiths or no faith, by the power of his gentle witness. The many addresses and homilies offered by the Pope were more than anyone could digest in a few short days. This handy volume gathers all of these texts in a single, inexpensive resource, making them accessible for reflection, study, or prayer by individuals or groups. Included here are his • homily for canonization of St. Junípero Serra • address to the Joint Session of Congress • greeting to a group of homeless people in New York City • address to the United Nations General Assembly • prayer at Ground Zero • extemporaneous address at the Festival of Families • words to victims of sexual abuse • address to inmates at a Philadelphia prison • and much more. This book will serve as a powerful reminder to any reader of “the allure of goodness and love” that America experienced through the presence of Pope Francis.

A New Awareness is an endeavor of affection and generosity toward Sebastian Moore. The book examines his key theological insights and themes over seventy years and proposes that they are still relevant today for the Christian Community. He was a theologian and poet. He wrote about many theological topics: the significance of Jesus, the experiences of the disciples and their meaning for us, redemption, the Trinity, sexuality and ecclesiology, and original sin. But he is mainly known for being the theologian of desire: self-love to self-gift, desire is love trying to happen, to be myself for another, and the insight that there is no more wonderful reality than to be desired by the one you desire.

Here is presented the masterpiece of St. Thomas — the Summa Theologica — in simplified form. This vast summary of Thomistic teaching which deals with every worthwhile truth from A to Z, from the attributes of God to the zeal of man has been distilled into this little volume. It is, in truth, a miniature and simple Summa for everyman. As its name signifies, the Summa Theologica of St. Thomas is the sum total of all theological knowledge, a vast synthesis in which is unfolded all that can be known of God and man. It is divided into three parts which deal with God, man and the God-man, respectively. It comprises 38 tracts, 631 questions, about 3,000 articles, 10,000 objections and their answers. Obviously all of this vast material is not contained in this small volume. However, an earnest effort has been made by the authors to translate and re-present St. Thomas in concise form for the use of everyman. The Confraternity of the Precious Blood in presenting this volume, aims to do for the Summa of St. Thomas what it has already done for the Missal—to place it into the hands of all men. The millions who have found Father Stedman’s “My Sunday Missal” so helpful and practical for the Mass of the Altar will find “My Way of Life” equally helpful and practical for the “Mass of Life”. St. Thomas begins the Prologue to his great work with these words: “Because a teacher of Catholic truth ought not only to teach the learned but also to instruct the beginners, in accordance with the words of the Apostle: As unto little ones in Christ, I gave you milk to drink, not meat (1 Cor. 3/1,2) we purpose in this book to treat of whatever belongs to the Christian religion in such a way as may tend to the instruction of beginners.” The volume, here presented, is in full accord with the purpose of St. Thomas. It brings his message from the halls of learning out into the market place and into the home. While primarily meant for everyman, it is profound enough for the most erudite. Hence it can be readily recommended to father and mother, sister and brother, to the high-school and college student, to the convert, the study and Newman Club, to the Confraternity class, to the religious and the priest, in a word, it can be recommended to everyone. Why Philosophy Matters written by Raymond Angelo Belliotti and has been published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-09-18 with Political Science categories.

This book demonstrates that philosophy matters to everyday living and that people who ignore the enduring, fundamental questions of life thereby unwittingly relinquish part of their humanity. The question – “How should I live my life?” – along with cosmological inquiries about the nature of the world, animated Western philosophy during its earliest recorded years. Given that belief in the Greek and Roman gods failed to provide substantive guidelines for everyday living, philosophy arose in large measure as practical instruction in the art of living the good human life. Throughout history, philosophers have provided vastly different answers to the question of what constitutes such a life. By analyzing carefully their disparate definitions, recipes, and accounts of the good human life we can understand better who we are and who we might be. This work examines the answers provided by over thirty philosophers to aspects of building character, forging personal relations, promoting sound political strategies, living meaningfully, and dying gracefully. In so doing, over twenty lessons for living a worthy life emerge.

Cinema S Illusions Opera S Allure written by David Schroeder and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-10-06 with Social Science categories.

The invention of cinema was ingenious, so much so that virtually no-one quite knew what to do with it. In its earliest stages, especially with the advent of the feature film, it needed models, and opera proved to be especially useful in that regard. The allure of opera to cinema early in the twentieth century held up through the silent era, into sound films, through the golden age of movies, and beyond. This book explores the numerous ways – some predictable, some unexpected, and some bizarre – in which this has happened. The influence of Richard Wagner on filmmakers has been especially striking, and some have even devised visual images that seem to emerge from a kind of non-verbal Wagnerian essence – a formative, musical urge that can underlie a cinematic idea, defying explanation and remaining purely sensory. Directors like Griffith, DeMille, Eisenstein, Chaplin, Bunuel or Hitchcock have intuited this possibility. Schroeder provides a fascinating, well-researched and always entertaining account of the influence of one medium on another, and shows that opera can often be found lurking in the background (or booming in the foreground) of an impressive range of films.

Shakespeare And Philosophy written by Raymond Angelo Belliotti and has been published by Rodopi this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012 with Law categories.

This book is an interdisciplinary work that weaves literary interpretation, legal theory, and philosophical doctrine about sex and love into a coherent mosaic in the context of two of Shakespeare’s plays: The Merchant of Venice and Measure for Measure. In the process, the work advances literary interpretations of the plays including character studies of some of the main protagonists. The aim is partly theoretical but mostly practical: to demonstrate what we can learn about living a robustly meaningful and significant human life by taking Shakespeare’s work seriously from contemporary philosophical and legal vantage points. Shakespeare does not reveal a tightly defined moral system that he is trying to urge upon his audience. Instead, Shakespeare challenges his audience to struggle with moral complexity as they confront conflicting elements surrounding legal and moral issues presented in his work and within the souls of his characters. His issues and their conflicts are also ours. Much of Shakespeare’s work consists of raising weighty questions inextricably connected to the human condition and inviting his audience to ponder possible answers. The philosophical lessons about living our lives meaningfully and significantly that we can derive from Shakespeare are simple yet powerful.
