An entertaining and provocative account of India’s past, written by one of the country’s leading thinkers For all India’s myths, its sea of stories and moral epics, Indian history remains a curiously unpeopled place. In Incarnations, Sunil Khilnani fills that space, bringing to life fifty extraordinary men and women who changed both India and the world. Journeying across India in pursuit of their stories—visiting slum temples, ayurvedic call centers, Bollywood studios, textile mills, and Mughal fortresses—Khilnani offers trenchant portraits of emperors, warriors, philosophers, artists, iconoclasts, and entrepreneurs. Some of these historical figures are famous. Some are unjustly forgotten. And all, Khilnani convinces us, are deeply relevant today. As their rich and surprising lives take the reader through twenty-five hundred winding years of Indian and world history, Khilnani brings wit, feeling, historical rigor, and uncommon insight to dilemmas that extend from ancient times to our own. We encounter the Buddha not as the usual beatific icon but as a radical young social critic. We meet the ancient Sanskrit linguist who inspires computer programmers today. We hear the medieval poets, ribald and profound, who mocked rituals and caste and whose voices resonate in contemporary poetry. And we see giants of the twentieth-century Independence movement—among them Mohandas Gandhi; Ambedkar, the Untouchable lawyer turned constitution maker; and the legendary singer M. S. Subbulakshmi—not as cardboard cutouts but as complex and striving human beings. At once a provocative and sophisticated reinterpretation of India’s history and an incisive commentary on its present-day conflicts and struggles, Incarnations is an authoritative, sweeping, and often moving account of a nation coming into its own.

Democracy Indian Style written by Anton Pelinka and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-09-25 with Political Science categories.

Democracy Indian Style explores the social and cultural factors underlying India's successful democracy by describing and analyzing the life of Subhas Chandra Bose and his impact on India before and after independence. As a nation India is very old. Its political culture has deep roots in India's pre-colonial history, but it is also a product of Western-style democracy, which has shaped and even created the nation. The analysis is balanced between chapters that explain Bose's life and career and those that describe the Indian political system. Anton Pelinka explains India's stable democracy as a mixture of British and American patterns—Westminster parliamentary rule plus federalism—and a specific set of power-sharing arrangements among religions, linguistic groups, and castes. Democracy Indian Style offers one answer to the enigma of how Indian democracy succeeds, by describing the working of India's constitution, the weaknesses of its party system, and the specifics of Indian elections. The focus on Bose provides a second explanation for India's political success. Democracy Indian Style is a timely exploration of the roots of Indian democracy, and will be of interest to political scientists, historians, and students of Indian politics.

A System Of Life written by Jan-Peter Hartung and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-02-01 with Social Science categories.

While much current research on political Islam revolves around militant Islamism, the genesis of this ideology remains little understood. A System of Life is a pioneering examination of the earliest attempt at a systematic outline of Islamist ideology, namely that proposed in the 1930s and early 1940s by the renowned Indo-Muslim intellectual Sayyid Abu'l-A'la Mawdudi. Hartung reconstructs his thought in the light of the competing ideologies at play at the time, especially his claim to recast Islam as an all-comprehensive, self-contained and inner-worldly system of life. His analysis is embedded in an understanding of the history of ideas that assumed increasingly global dimensions through colonial encounters. By showing how Mawdudi -- depicted as a major protagonist of this development - attempted to align elements of Western philosophical thought with selected traditional Islamic ideas and concepts, 'Islamism' is established as an Islamic contribution to a universalistic notion of modernity. Along with offering a detailed portrayal of Mawdudi's system of thought, Hartung also discusses the reception and modification of his ideas in the Middle East, predominantly among intellectuals of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood, and among their imitators in postcolonial South Asia.

‘Chaturvedi goes beyond the admiration and the controversy to chase down the mystique of the man Bose was ... A compelling read’ Pritish Nandy ‘Combines a sure grasp of history with an ability to convert little-known facts into a marvellous fictional page-turner’ Mihir Bose Nazi Germany, 1942. Stalingrad has fallen to the Axis powers after a bitter, brutal campaign; in North Africa, Field Marshal Rommel’s Afrika Korps has emerged victorious; Rangoon has been seized by the Japanese after their capture of Singapore. Amidst these developments, Indian nationalist leader Subhas Chandra Bose has been camped in wartime Berlin, since 1941, working furiously to build an army that will be able to march with him overland towards the Indian frontier. Bose is confronted with multiple dilemmas: in order to free India militarily from the clutches of the British empire, he must ally with Hitler’s forces, the Japanese army and Mussolini’s troops. And even if he succeeds, can a post-British India emerge as a single, united country? Set during a turbulent and complex time in our nation’s history, A Bird from Afar is an unforgettable tale of courage, resilience and Subhas Bose’s obsessive quest for Indian independence during the Second World War.
