The adventure of a group of undocumented central-south americans in their odyssey for coming to the United States. Based on a real history. The illegal emigration to other countries has existed for thousands of years, for varied causes that go from religious, ethnic or political pursuit up to familiar conflicts. Nowadays, the most common emigration happens for economic reasons. It is said that if you come to the United States, your problems will be solved and you will be able to have everything imaginable. This promise dazzles to many Latin-American young people (both provincial and university) that leave aside their life, family, school and profession to go in search of the "American dream". So dazzled they are for the desire to come, that forget the most valuable thing that the man possesses: his life. This book reveals everything that nobody dares to share: the stumbles in the way, the solitude, the difficult moments on those who are never warned. It compiles true facts experienced on his own flesh, which allow us to be witnesses of this trip and of his fortunes. And not only that: The American Dream Journey makes us reflect on our reality, on our possibilities and on the real personal enrichment.

As a child growing up in Malaysia, Shing Yin Khor had two very different ideas of what “America” meant. The first looked a lot like Hollywood, full of beautiful people and sunlight and freeways. The second looked more like The Grapes of Wrath - a nightmare landscape filled with impoverished people, broken-down cars, barren landscapes, and broken dreams. Those contrasting ideas have stuck with Shing ever since, even now that she lives and works in LA. The American Dream? A Journey on Route 66 is Shing’s attempt to find what she can of both of these Americas on a solo journey (small adventure-dog included) across the entire expanse of that iconic road, beginning in Santa Monica and ending up Chicago. And what begins as a road trip ends up as something more like a pilgrimage in search of an American landscape that seems forever shifting, forever out of place.

A touching memoir recounting the journey of a young Cuban immigrant to the US who went on to become a professor and university dean. In February 1962, three years into Fidel Castro’s rule of their Cuban homeland, the González family—an auto mechanic, his wife, and two young children—landed in Miami with a few personal possessions and two bottles of Cuban rum. As his parents struggled to find work, eleven-year-old Gerardo struggled to fit in at school, where a teacher intimidated him and school authorities placed him on a vocational track. Inspired by a close friend, Gerardo decided to go to college. He not only graduated but, with hard work and determination, placed himself on a path through higher education that brought him to a deanship at the Indiana University School of Education. In this deeply moving memoir, González recounts his remarkable personal and professional journey. The memoir begins with Gerardo’s childhood in Cuba and recounts the family’s emigration to the United States and struggles to find work and assimilate, and González’s upward track through higher education. It demonstrates the transformative power that access to education can have on one person’s life. Gerardo’s journey came full circle when he returned to Cuba fifty years after he left, no longer the scared, disheartened refugee but rather proud, educated, and determined to speak out against those who wished to silence others. It includes treasured photographs and documents from González’s life in Cuba and the US. His is the story of one immigrant attaining the American Dream, told at a time when the fate of millions of refugees throughout the world, and Hispanics in the United States, especially his fellow Cubans, has never been more uncertain. “Author and educator Gerardo M. González brilliantly illustrates the joys and struggles of the refugee experience, and the inarguable role of education as an open door to opportunity. This is a delightful read, and one that will inspire you to achieve greatness regardless of the odds.” —Dr. Eduardo J. Padrón, President, Miami Dade College “There can be no more persuasive testimony to the power of intelligence, commitment, and inspiration than Gerardo M. González’s memoir. The contribution of immigrants to America’s prosperity and national achievements is undeniably impressive. Yet, this transformational story of challenge and achievement, while individually exceptional, is nonetheless emblematic of the experience of countless immigrants who have made America better than it could otherwise have been. No finer antidote to the simplistic sloganeering of the immigration debate exists.” —John V. Lombardi, President Emeritus, University of Florida, and author of How Universities Work

Immigrant: A Journey to the American Dream is the story of all immigrants who left poverty and hopelessness behind and came to America, dreaming of a better life. It is the life story of little Totò, a poor Sicilian immigrant, who comes to America in his late teens and, through hard work and determination, goes on to live the American dream. The book proceeds from his childhood to his first experiences in American factories, time in the US Army, and his successful academic career. On the whole, Totò’s boyhood is not a happy one after having lost his mother at the tender age of three. Virtually left to fend for himself, he turns into a delinquent little boy—skipping school; stealing from his family and neighbors; and going around the countryside, looking for and exploding live ordnance left behind during WWII. To get him off the streets, his parents send him to a boarding school run by the charitable Dominican monks. When the family immigrates to the States, he finds work at a hosiery mill and then at a steel plant while learning English at the local evening school. He is later drafted in the US Army where fellow recruits make fun of his foreign accent. What riles him the most is when they call him Shorty. But soon, he accepts the fact that he is indeed short. The acceptance of himself for what and who he is literally changes his life. It turns him into a self-confident young man ready to face whatever challenge comes his way. With this can-do attitude, he goes on to college and becomes a successful university professor.

An Unlikely Journey written by Julián Castro and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018 with BIOGRAPHY & AUTOBIOGRAPHY categories.

In the spirit of a young Barack Obama's Dreams from My Father, comes a candid and compelling memoir about race and poverty in America. In many ways, there was no reason Julian Castro would have been expected to be a success. Born to unmarried parents in a poverty-stricken neighborhood of a struggling city, his prospects of escaping his circumstance seemed bleak. But he and his twin brother Joaquin had something going for them: their mother. A former political activist, she provided the launch pad for what would become an astonishing ascent. Julian and Joaquin would go on to attend Stanford and Harvard before entering politics at the ripe age of 26. Soon after, Joaquin become a state representative and Julian was elected mayor of San Antonio, a city he helped revitalize and transform into one of the country's leading economies. His success in Texas propelled him onto the national stage, where he was the keynote speaker at the 2012 DNC--the same spot President Obama held three conventions prior--and then to Washington D.C. where he served as the Obama Administration's Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. After being shortlisted as a potential running mate for Hillary Clinton, he is now seen by many as a future presidential candidate. Julian Castro's story not only affirms the American dream, but also resonates with millions, who in an age of political cynicism and hardening hearts are searching for a new hero. No matter one's politics, this book is the transcendent story of a resilient family and the unlikely journey of an emerging national icon.
