However, the sound scholarship and dauntless intrepid ity of men like Dollinger, Janssen, Denifle, Paulus, not to men tion others, have conquered a position that will no longer allow them to be brushed aside with a ponderous Teutonic witticism or a Gargantuan epithet. The Church of God has lost her Refor mation character as a term incognito peopled by cowled satyrs, mitred sensualists, and tiaraed monsters. Historical criticism is gradually dissipating the whole Reformation myth, and revealing its founder in a light hardly flattering, and certainly not conso nant with an exalted sense of personal piety and holiness, or even a commendable degree of respectability.
