Excerpt from The American Journal of the Medical Sciences, 1921, Vol. 161 Reference to any standard text Will lead to the inference that primary bronchopneumonia in adults is not a common disease. That it is the usual type of pneumonia in children is accepted as well as that terminal pneumonias are commonly of the catarrhal variety. But that bronchopneumonia is at all confined to the extremes 'of life, childhood and old age is, I believe, incorrect. It will be the purpose of this paper to present evidence indicating the frequency of this type of pneumonia, to discuss the several pathologic and clinical pictures that may be grouped under the generic heading of broncho or lobular pneumonia and their more serious compli cations. Excerpt from The American Journal of the Medical Sciences, Vol. 162: July-December, 1921 The two recent epidemics of influenza have given opportunity for restudying the blood changes in this disease. Yet such study, judging from the reports, has been for the most part incidental to a general clinical study and has not been sufficient to establish the leukocytic picture in the infection. At least I have found but one paper, that of Adler,1 of Zurich, in which the blood findings have been a matter of primary interest and have received adequate con Sideration. Excerpt from The American Journal of Hygiene, 1922, Vol. 2 In our routine procedure the soil was thoroughly broken up be fore being emptied into the sieves. Precautions should be taken not to carry over a little of the soil from one sample to another, and to keep the bottom of the sieve from contact with any dirt. The water used in the funnels was usually heated to a temperature of about 115° F. A funnel, after being set up, was filled within an inch and a half of the rim, so that when the sieve was placed in position there would be no contact between the water and the bottom of the sieve. Water of the same temperature was then poured over the rim of the funnel, until it was practically full and the level of the water almost an inch above the bottom of the sieve. The samples were usually set up in the isolating apparatus some time during the day and left stand ing over night before the examinations were made. One method of drawing off the samples of water for microscopical examination was to attach a second clamp higher on the tube and to allow the water between the two clamps to run Off into a 50 cc. Centrifuge tube (see Fig. A simpler method is to slightly Open the clamp at the bottom of the rubber tube and let the water run out until the centri fuge tube is filled. After centrifugation the supernatant water was drawn Off with a long pipette and the residue spread out on a two-by three-inch slide, for microscopical examination: In some instances, when the soil sample was of saturated clay or very finely divided sand, a considerable amount of sediment would fall into the funnel. This could, if necessary, be reduced in amount by running it through a smaller isolating appartus before microscopical examination. Excerpt from The American Journal of Materia Medica, Vol. 1 Though it may be said, with truth, that the Hom opathic Materia Medica is far in advance of all others, as regards a knowledge of the specific virtue of each separate medicinal agent, it is also true that it is lumbered with a mass of symptoms worse than useless: thorns and brambles, which choke and obscure the truth, while they deter or annoy those who are seeking it; false lights, which lead those who are guided by them far from the true channel; excresences, which deform what otherwise might have some comeliness. Many symptoms have been introduced under the various remedies, whose paternity is such as not to entitle them to take rank with others lawfully begotten. Even Hahnemann has given us many symptoms which were not observed on the healthy, but on the sick, as any one may see by referring to Reil's Aconite, translated by Dr. Millard. Such symptoms, and others of doubtful character, should be known, and the Materia Medica expurgated of them. Now, there is no edition of our Materia Medica which indicates to the student which of the symptoms are reliable and which are not. It is one of the ends proposed by this Journal to expose these false symptoms, that they may be thrust out. Vitamin D deficiency is a worldwide problem and many associations with diseases are being discovered. Recently, there has been an interest in the role that vitamin D plays in the inception and progression of lung disease. Vitamin D and the Lung: Mechanisms and Disease Associations delivers a concise, evidence-based review of the evidence for a role of vitamin D in various lung disorders. Divided into three sections, the first section of the book delivers a review of how vitamin D deficiency emerged in human populations, and gives a perspective on how humans evolved to maximize the efficiency of production of vitamin D. The second section of the book reviews aspects of vitamin D mechanisms on different immune cells, lung tissue, and genetics that have potential impact on lung disease. The third section follows with chapters on associations of vitamin D with the risk for viral infections, asthma and allergies, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cystic fibrosis, tuberculosis, and finally, lung cancer with an emphasis on ongoing research and clinical issues and needs for future research in each field. Written by an international group of expert authors, Vitamin D and the Lung: Mechanisms and Disease Associations is an essential text for researchers in the respiratory field and practicing clinicians including internists, pulmonologists, and primary care personnel.
