Excerpt from The American Journal of Insanity, 1861, Vol. 18 The exact position of this system in the psychological medicine of the past, and its relations to the present stage of progress in that de partment, are less easy to determine. Esquirol gave a powerful ini pulse through his writings to the record Of facts connected with in sanity, and the extent and accuracy of his observations were the just grounds of his fame. But he carefully abstains from advancing any theory in connection with them, and does not even point out the com parative value Of facts, or discriminate between them in any way. They are arranged in their merest accidental relations, and thus pre sented with the least possible regard to their meaning or use. This was, of course, all that could be expected from one whose-chief mis sion it was to overcome prejudices, to dissipate errors, and to make known truths of useful practical application in the treat ment of the insane. But his example, so far as a practical psychol ogy is concerned, has been perhaps too closely followed by the larger number of those who have succeeded him. Excerpt from The American Journal of Insanity, 1877-8, Vol. 34 To reflect, therefore, is to deliver one's self up to the automatic action of cerebral cells, which, by mutual re actions and inter-associations, eliminate psychical force which is, therefore, originated, controlled and preserved by certain chemico-molecular, or vital disturbances of their static equilibrium. This force is thus discharged or disgorged and, like all purely material displays of functional activity, is only guaged and regulated by the physiological activities of the particular portions of the the cerebral organism to which they appertain. Under these same circumstances memory merely represents a certain primordial property of nervous element. All the processes of intellectuality are performed in a blind, unconscious, irresistible manner. Automatic activity reigns supreme, and thereby becomes the sole force which rules and orders the intellectual operations. Excerpt from The American Journal of Insanity, 1888-1889, Vol. 45: Edited by the Medical Officers of the New York State Lunatic Asylum Owing to the crowded state of this asylum several years ago, I had to send a considerable number of patients to other asylums, and nearly all these patients were much improved by the change. I noticed the same thing in a group of patients I took from another asylum. I firmly believe that with what we call our chronic patients, we should frequently shift them from ward to ward, change their occupation and subject them to new influences. Were I specially interested in any private patient I should, in the event of his not recovering speedily, give him a change of asylum. More interest is taken in a fresh case than an old one, and even change of sur roundings frequently stirs mental action hitherto dormant. I am stating what is, I think, universally accepted, when I say that the vast majority of recoveries in asylums take place within the first year of residence. I have looked up the returns both of this asylum for five years, and those of the Royal Edinburgh Asylum for a similar period. Taking the returns of this asylum for five years ending 1887, I find that there were 316 recoveries 233within the first year, 53 under two years, and only 30 above two years' residence; that is to say, per cent recovered within the year, per cent in the period under two years, and per cent in the period above two years. In the Royal Edinburgh Asylum in a five years' period ending 1886, 617 patients recovered 533 under the year, 51 under two years, and 33 above two years; that is, per cent in the first period, per cent in the second, and per cent in the third period. It is unnecessary for me to give further evidence of what is generally allowed to be a fact, viz.: that recoveries after a period of say two years are rare, and that recovery after prolonged attacks of insanity are very rare. Excerpt from The American Journal of Insanity, 1868-9, Vol. 25 The whole life of the defendant was retraced with much particularity on both issues. The preliminary issue was tried in April, 1865, in the county where the Offence was committed, and occupied five days. The difficulty of Obtaining an unbiased jury on that occa sion, grew, in consequence of the increased publicity and agitation of the matter, into an impossibility of doing so on the trial of the main issue, compounded of both the guilt and the insanity. To try this, the whole panel Of jurors summoned was first exhausted, and then the whole jury list of the county; and out of the whole three hundred or thereabouts, not twelve men could be found, who were not excluded either by peremptory challenges, or for confessed or presumed bias. It was therefore determined to try the case in Cortland county. Both trials were before Justice Mason, of the Supreme Court, now of the Court of Appeals. The government appeared by Cochrane, Attorney General, on the pre liminary issue, and by Martindale, his successor, on the main issue, assisted by Mr. Wilson, District Attorney of Tompkins county, on both. The defence was man aged by Mr. Tremaine as leading counsel. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
