Excerpt from The American Revolution, Vol. 1 of 2 It is an obvious comment upon the present work, that a story of the American Revolution which stops with the sur render oi Cornwallis and the consequent fall of Lord North's ministry is incomplete. One might reply, in general, that any historical narrative must needs be incomplete wherever it may happen to stop; but on the present occasion a more suitable answer is that the story is continued in my book entitled The Critical Period of American History, the first chapter of which deals with the Results of Yorktown. The text of this edition has been thoroughly revised, and in many places new matter has been added. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. In some instances, the author acknowledged her indebtedness to the rich fields Of reminiscence In which it was her priv ilege to glean, in other passages the result Of such gleaning is evident from the minuteness and vivid-a ness with which She portrayed certain characters and depicted the scenes and circumstances in which they moved. Excerpt from A Naval History of the American Revolution, Vol. 1 of 2 IN its various aspects our struggle for independence has from the beginning excited the attention and received the critical study of historical scholars, and is a never-failing source of discussion and spec ulation. From social, commercial, political, diplo matic, and military points of view this interesting field has been worked over most thoroughly. Yet the maritime activities of the war, excepting the episodes, have been subjected to no ve inquiry, although the importance of their bearing upon military movements, foreign re lations, and commercial intercourse is manifest. In the archives of our country and in those of England and France, as well as in private collections, news papers, and elsewhere, will be found a large amount of material hitherto only partially utilized. In the preparation of this work these original sources of information have been explored in the effort to meet in some measure the present need of more adequate treatment. Excerpt from Daughters of the American Revolution Magazine, 1917, Vol. 1 Of our important national songs those best known to all the people are Hail Columbia The Star Spangled Banner (1814) and America Yankee Doodle (1755) is rarely heard as a song, being used almost entirely for the effect of the tune. It is, therefore, nearly one hundred years since we have produced a national song or hymn that has taken a firm hold upon the people; and as musical composers were not numerous in this country in those earlier days, and it was the custom to set new words to tunes that the people knew, all of these old songs are sung to tunes that were not written for them. With the exception of America, however, the songs have monopolized the old tunes to which they were set, and no other important songs are now sung to them. Excerpt from The Diplomatic Correspondence of the American Revolution, Vol. 1 In preparing the papers for the press, according to the spirit of the resolution of Congress, the first rule has been to print such matter only as possesses some value, either as containing historical facts, or illustrating traits of character, or developing the causes of prominent events. In such a mass of materials, so varied in their character, and in the topics upon which they treat, it has not always been easy to discriminate with precision in regard to these points. The editor can only say, that he has exercised his best judgment to accomplish the end proposed. His task has been rendered still more perplexing from the disputes, and even quarrels, which existed between the early American Commissioners, and with the effects of which a large portion of their correspondence is tinged. N o worthy purpose can be answered by reviving the remembrance of these contentions at the present day; but, at the same time, such particulars ought to be retained as will exhibit in their proper light the characters of the persons concerned, and show how far their altercations operated to the public good or injury. This line has been pursued as far as practicable and those parts of the correspond ence chiefly marked with personalities, and touching little on public interests, have been omitted, as neither suited to the dignity of the subject, nor to the design of this publication. On perusing these volumes, it may at first seem extraordinary that so large a collection of letters, written by different persons at different times, embracing topics of great moment, and assuming the character of secret and confidential despatches, should be so generally well fitted to meet the public eye. But it must be kept in mind, that the writers knew their letters would be read in open Congress, which was much the same as publishing them; and under this impression they were doubtless prompted to study circumspection both in matter and manner. Excerpt from University of California Publications in History, Vol. 1 Many writers have pointed out a connection between this war and the American Revolution by showing how the expulsion Of the French and the incurring of a war debt furnished an excuse for the new colonial policy inaugurated by the Tory party in England. There are, however, many other questions which connect the two movements as vitally, if more remotely, as those usually discussed.
