"One of the most controversial and colourful bishops of nineteenth-century Catholic England, Baines was ahead of his time in developing modern methods of teaching at Ampleforth and Prior Park; he also attempted to establish the first Catholic university in England since the Reformation." "Bishop Baines succeeded in raising the profile of the Catholic Church, particularly in the west of England. A great correspondent, his letters and archives throw considerable light on the problems he faced, and provide an insight to the times in which he lived."--BOOK JACKET.

Britain Ireland And Northern Ireland Since 1980 written by Eamonn O'Kane and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-08-21 with History categories.
This book is the first in-depth analysis of the interaction between the British and Irish governments and the role they have played in seeking to resolve the conflict in Northern Ireland since 1980. Eamonn O’Kane examines Britain and Ireland’s objectives in relation to the Northern Ireland conflict, focusing on the influential factors that persuaded these two governments to co-operate at a closer level and those which made this co-operation difficult to achieve and at times sustain. Drawing on extensive primary research, including interviews with leading British and Irish politicians and civil servants, the book questions many of the most widely accepted arguments regarding the conflict. It sheds new light upon the objectives of the two states in Northern Ireland, the origins of the peace process, the reasons that the conflict appeared so intractable and the role of the international dimension. The book places events in context and offers a more convincing explanation for many of the advances and disappointments in Northern Ireland in recent years than is currently available. This volume offers a reinterpretation of the intergovernmental approach to the Northern Ireland conflict and peace process and is an invaluable resource for students and researchers of British politics, Irish studies and conflict studies.

Excerpt from The Ampleforth Journal, Vol. 24: July, 1918 Yet the anglo-saxon Church that Sprang from the teaching of St Augustine and his successors became definitely and unmistakably Roman. The peaceful penetration of the Roman missionaries with their ordered system of liturgy pro duced its natural result. Doubtless their pagan converts had no prepossessions; but even the sturdy opposition of the old British Church would seem to have yielded. The liturgy of this island thus became in all essentials Roman. We say in all essentials, because it was characteristic of those times to allow a considerable variety of local usage on minor points. Diocese differed from diocese in ritual, for bishops enjoyed and exercised large powers of selection. And this is true, not only of England, but of the whole Church of that and several subsequent centuries. Uniformity was not attempted, and perhaps was not possible, until the era of printed missals. With the Conquest came a powerful in uence from across the Channel, and the settling of Norman ecclesiastics in English sees. It was natural that they should bring with them, and introduce into England, the liturgical customs of their continental home. But on one point we should be quite clear: they did not introduce a new rite. They, no less than the anglo-saxon, used the Roman Rite. What then had become of the Gallican Rite E' It was by this time practically extinct - Charlemagne had seen to that - and survived only, if at all, in the abundant varieties of local practice, so character istic then as afterwards of the French Church. The Norman Conquest, therefore, brought no change of rite, but did bring many small changes of ritual. It is dangerous here to speak too definitely; but, if We said that it introduced into England the Use of Rouen (the great Norman sanctuary), we should not convey a very false impression. Excerpt from The Ampleforth Journal, Vol. 25: Autumn, 1919 The literary aspect of a speech is the art of a speech. Some speeches are works of art, and some are not. It says nothing, or almost nothing, for the excellence or the success of a speech that it is a Work of literary art. The object of a speech is to persuade and the persuasiveness of a Speech may evidently depend on a variety of circumstances with which literature, and therefore art, has nothing to do. The Speaker's personal qualities - his voice, his presence, his history and character; the composition of the audience, and its temper the psycho logical moment (in Bismarckian jargon); and a dozen other things, often contribute more to success in speaking than any excellence of composition. When the good Vicar, in Brace bridge Hall, preached his Christmas sermon, he undertook to prove, against the Puritans, that it was right and proper to rejoice at that holy season; the sermon was very learned, very dry, and very tiresome, 'but its effect was most satis factory, for his hearers, as soon as they got out of church set to work to make merry in the most devoted and orthodox fashion. The mendicant Orders had a profound impact on urban society, life and culture from the thirteenth century onwards. Being engaged in extensive and ambitious pastoral activities they depended on outside support for their material existence. Their influence extended into ecclesiastical as well as secular affairs, leading to the creation of a network of connections to different social groups and on occasion even an involvement in politics. The role of the mendicants in a medieval capital has not yet been systematically studied. A first attempt to study a city of this scale is here made for London.

Explores the changing aspirations, attitudes and identities of English Catholics in the late eighteenth century This book explores the changing aspirations, attitudes and identities of English Catholics in the late eighteenth century, a period which marked a critical moment of transition in their spiritual, political and intellectual culture. It is based on the experiences of the English Catholic baronet, Grand Tourist and politician Sir Thomas Gascoigne (1745-1810). Gascoigne was born on the Continent into a devout Catholic family based in Yorkshire; however, following an unusual Continental upbringing and extensive series of Grand Tours to the courts of Catholic Europe, he would abjure his faith for a seat in Parliament. Throughout his life, he was an important advocate of agricultural reform, a considerable coal owner interested in mining engineering, as well as a keen developer of spa culture. By examining the experiences of Gascoigne and his milieu, this book explores English Catholic attitudes towards continental Catholicism, the influence of the European Enlightenment upon their education and outlook, and how this affected their Christianity, their estates and their conception of national identity. It demonstrates how increased toleration entailed a gradual rejection amongst English Catholics of a pious separatism for a more ecumenical and, ultimately, Enlightened approach to religion. Although this risked the loss of English Catholics to Anglicanism, many - like Gascoigne - remained crypto-Catholic in sympathy. They adapted their faith to the Enlightenment and regarded it as a matter of personal conviction and private choice. ALEXANDER LOCK is Curator of Modern Historical Manuscripts at the British Library.
