The undertaking was repeatedly postponed with the intention of awaiting some period of lei sure; but as from year to year the prospect of that period seemed to recede rather than to approach I at last despaired of its ever arriving, and some four years ago entered upon my task without farther delay, and have since prosecuted it in such intervals as I could snatch from professional occupation. The democratic societies found no friends who dared to come forward and openly name and defend them. The opposition leaders could not make up their minds to this. Yet the vague and general language which had been used made a covert defence possible. The Federalists sought to make it a battle for and against the democratic clubs; the opposition strove to make it a contest concerning the general right of the people to form voluntary associations, and to discuss the measures of an administration. It may be fairly considered that the result was a drawn battle. But one important fact at least was made clear, and that was that the democratic societies could find no one among their supposed political friends who was willing to advocate them without disguise. The discredit which was thus brought upon them was happily aided by the overthrow of the Jacobin club itself, at Paris, which opportunely occurred about this time. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Gentlemen: ?The last Tuesday of April next being the day appointed by law for the election of a governor for the ensuing three years, the great importance of making a wise choice in the present peculiar situation of our local and national affairsappears to have made a deep impression on the minds of considerate men in the different parts of the State. 1 The Constitution having been ratified by the necessary number of States, the Federalists everywhere made the utmost efforts to elect Senators and Congressmen who were favorable to the new scheme. Nowhere was their task more difficult than in New York. The contest in the Convention had been very severe, and the ratification had been carried only by sheer force of argument and outside pressure. The head and front of the opposition was Governor Clinton, a man with a very great personal following, of strong will and much ability. Hamilton threw himself into the conflict with his usual zeal. He travelled through the State, and published the address given above; and, not content with this, he sought to break down Clinton and defeat his reelection. With this object he published a second address and the letters of H. G., which follow, and which are a sustained attack upon the Governor's whole course and attitude. Clinton was re, elected by a majority of less than 500, but his power was fatally crippled, and the opposition was demoralized as Hamilton desired. The Federalists on their side obtained four out of the six Congressmen, and subsequently the two Senators. These addresses and the letters of H.
