He lived from 551-479 BC, and the principles he espoused largely reflected the values and traditions in China at the time. The complete twenty books of philosophic discussion by Chinese philosopher Confucius are presented here anew in hardcover. Originally, these sayings and conversations were penned during the Warring States period of Chinese antiquity. The subjects range from wise behavior in times of crisis to instruction upon how to live a peaceful life characterized by serenity, humility and good work. The importance of family life and community cooperation are alluded to, offering insight into the mores and customs of ancient China. The politics of the time, rife with infighting between noble families and dukedoms, attract consideration of Confucius and his companions. To better illustrate his points, examples and analogies are readily offered by Confucius, who engages with other philosophers through the course of the twenty named books comprising the core text. This edition's translator is James Legge, a Scottish Sinologist who spent his lifetime in China translating the philosophical and artistic classics.

Traditionally held to be the work of two of Confucius's closest disciples, the books were compiled in their present form late in the second or first century BCE and have occupied a central position in educational and political life for almost a thousand years throughout the East Asian cultural sphere. This volume shows the influence of the Sage's teachings over the course of Chinese history--on state ideology, the civil service examination system, imperial government, the family, and social relations--and the fate of Confucianism in China in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, as China developed alongside a modernizing West and Japan. Some Chinese intellectuals attempted to reform the Confucian tradition to address new needs; others argued for jettisoning it altogether in favor of Western ideas and technology; still others condemned it angrily, arguing that Confucius and his legacy were responsible for China's feudal, ''backward'' conditions in the twentieth century and launching campaigns to eradicate its influences. Yet Chinese continue to turn to the teachings of Confucianism for guidance in their daily lives.

The Great Learning One of the "Four Books" in Confucianism Confucius Translated by James Legg The Great Learning was one of the "Four Books" in Confucianism. The Great Learning had come from a chapter in the Classic of Rites which formed one of the Five Classics. It consists of a short main text attributed to the teachings of Confucius and then ten commentary chapters accredited to one of Confucius' disciples, Zengzi. The ideals of the book were supposedly Confucius's; however the text was written after his death. The "Four Books" were selected by the neo-Confucian Zhu Xi during the Song Dynasty as a foundational introduction to Confucianism and examinations for the state civil service in China came to follow his lead. The text sets up a number of controversies that have underlain Chinese philosophy and political thinking. For example, one major controversy has been to define exactly the investigation of things. What things are to be investigated and how has been one of the crucial issues of Chinese philosophy. One of the first steps to understanding The Great Learning is to understand how to "investigate things." This did not consist of scientific inquiry and experimentation, but introspection, building on what is already "known" of "principle." True introspection was supposed to allow the mind to become all knowing with regards to morality, relationships, civic duty and nature.
