The analytic attitude" ranks as one of Freud's greatest creations. Both the findings of psychoanalysis as a method of investigation and its results as a method of treatment depend on its being consistent to a high degree. Yet Freud offered no concise, complex, generally acceptable formulation of what it is: his ideas, or a version of them, can only be derived from his papers on technique. Taking these ideas as a starting point, and with due regard to the contributions of other analysts over the years, the author rises to the challenge of defining the "ideal" attitude that he come to aspire to in his work as an analyst. To this end the author discusses not only the analyst's empathy, the need to establish an "atmosphere of safety" in relation to the dangers the patient perceives when facing the possibility of insight and personal change, but also the concepts of transference and resistance, and the nature of psychoanalytic interpretation and reconstruction.

What is it to listen? How do we hear? How do we allow meanings to emerge between each other? 'This book is about what Freud called "freely" or "evenly suspended attention", a form of listening, a kind of receptive incomprehension, which is fundamental and mandatory for the practice of psychoanalysis and psychotherapy. The author steps outside the usual parameters of psychoanalytic writing and explores how works of art and literature which elicit and require such listening began to appear in Europe, in abundance, from the late eighteenth-century onwards. Uncertainties, Mysteries, Doubts is a timely reminder, in the present era of audit and manualisation, of some of psychoanalysis's deep and living cultural roots. It hopes- by immersing the reader in the emotional, critical and contextual worlds of some artists and poets of Romanticism- to help psychotherapists, psychoanalysts, and counsellors in the endless challenge of staying open to their clients and patients, faced as we all are, therapists and clients alike, by multiple pressures to knowledgeable closure.

Here is the long-awaited new book by the influential, always provocative psychoanalyst, Roy Schafer. It focuses on a vacuum that has developed between psychoanalysis and critical thinkers in the social sciences and humanities. Schafer's goal is to weave psychoanalytic discourse into the tapestry of modern trends in intellectual history, notably linguistic and hermeneutic approaches to interpretation. The manner in which we ”narrate” our lives is the central theme of psychoanalytic discourse and a critical issue for all of us, Roy Schafer argues. Narrating, giving an account, presenting a version: these terms make up the core vocabulary of the narrative approach. From this perspective, Schafer offers a new understanding of such diverse issues as men's struggle against sentimentality; women and power; happiness and failure; and analysts' sublimated love for their patients.Whether he's redefining the self, reinterpreting Freud, or counteracting the stereotype of the aloof, authoritarian, and patriarchal analyst, Schafer's rich observations will inform and stimulate not only analysts but all those interested in psychoanalytic thought as an intellectual current of our times.

Analytic interpretation is fundamental to the process of psychoanalysis, Jungian analysis, and psychoanalytic psychotherapy. Interpretation is the medium by which the psychoanalytic art form is transmitted. What one chooses to say in analysis, why one chooses it, how one says it, when one says it; these are the building blocks of the interpretive process and the focus of Interpretation in Jungian Analysis: Art and Technique. This volume is the first of its kind in the literature of analytical psychology. Until now, the process of interpretation has been addressed only briefly in general Jungian texts. Interpretation in Jungian Analysis provides an in-depth exploration of the process, including the history of analytic technique, the role of language in analytic therapy, the poetics and metaphor of interpretation, and the relationship between interpretation and the analytic attitude. In addition, the steps involved with the creation of clear, meaningful, and transformative interpretations are plainly outlined. Throughout the book, clinical examples and reader exercises are provided to deepen the learning experience. The influence of the Jungian perspective on the interpretative process is outlined, as are the use of analytic reverie and confrontation during the analytic process. In addition to the historical, technical, and theoretic aspects of interpretation, this book also focuses on the artistic and creative elements that are often overlooked in the interpretive process. Ultimately, cultivating fluidity within the interpretive process is essential to engaging the depth and complexity of the psyche. Interpretation in Jungian Analysis will be of great interest to psychoanalysts and psychotherapists of all theoretical orientations and will be essential reading for students of analytical psychology.

Freud's position was clear. Patients present themselves to us in particular ways and, in our curiously skeptical analytic manner, we realize that they firmly reside in an inflexibly preferred psychological world. That world cunningly denies any other world. Every other reality is thereby rendered impossible and nonexistent - in other words, is repressed. In the language of Wittgenstein, the "states of affairs" that the patient announces to us are his vehemently adhered to and precious realities, and all other states of affairs are denied any existence or plausibility. Psychoanalytic theory is at great pains to deny this and to assert that every reality is both relevant and arbitrary, both understandable and refutable.
