Excerpt from The Anatomy of Truth The danger with which Religion is threatened to-day is of a different kind from that which found its expression in the intel lectual menaces which characterised the nineteenth century. It is now tacitly admitted on all sides that Science, having done her worst, has failed to disturb the sublime equanimity of her supposed antagonist but real ally. It is not that Science has failed to establish the truths upon which her nineteenth century attacks upon Religion were based. On the contrary, most of the scientific discoveries which furnished the materials for the hostile criticisms of Huxley and of Haeckel rest at the present time on a basis of even greater certainty than that which attached to them in those troublous days when they were first thrown, like nihilistic bombs, into the startled camp of Theology. No one to-day seriously questions, except in so far as Science herself has modified or corrected them, the truth of any of those scientific discoveries which at the time seemed, to theologians and sceptics alike, to carry theo logical annihilation before them. And yet no one, with whose opinion we need concern ourselves, seriously believes to-day that Religion stands in any danger from either the researches of Science or the musings of Philosophy. I take this opportunity of acknowledging that honour, which has been conferred upon me by the Council of the Sydenham Society, as well as of expressing my thanks for their kind acquiescence in my wish to undertake those chapters principally which relate to the practice of Surgery. The Preface to the Second Volume, by my friend Dr. Sieveking, leaves nothing for those who follow him to add, except, indeed, the testimony of time, that such a work as Rokitansky's 'Pathological Anatomy' becomes increasingly valuable to those by whom it is used. But the portion on 'Special Pathological Anatomy' must be used, as it was written, less as an elegant essay on Disease than as a register of well-observed - well-weighed - well-arranged facts. It is not adapted for the merely classical reader, but is a companion for the museum or pathological theatre, - a Lexicon, in which each case, as it occurs and needs explanation, may be found already at hand and in its place. It is, therefore, an invaluable book of reference for those who, amid the hurry of practice, require prompt and complete information. It should be observed, however, that facts take prominence in it according to their general pathological import. Rare facts, when isolated, too often occupy undue attention; by Rokitansky they are dismissed, perhaps in a few lines, - curtly explained, yet perfectly, because placed in their true relation to other facts. You break a bone you do not want the doctor to tell you about bones, you want him to set the bone. So the object of ministers is not to lecture us on the philosophy of religion; neither is it to ignore the philosophy of religion; it is to use the philosophy of religion to help men and women to live better, nobler, diviner lives. The truth, says Christ, shall make you free. Sanctify them through thy truth; thy word is truth. Truth is, then, an instrument. The object of truth is to set men free; it is to sanctify men, to make them holy. The minister who simply expounds the truth does not understand his mission. His mission is so to use truth that men shall be made free; that men shall be made holy. His ministry is, therefore, to be determined by fruits in the life. That is the best sermon, not which is a great pulpit effort, but which is helpful. If, young men, you have preached a sermon and some one comes up to you and says that was a great pulpit effort, hide your head in shame and go home and never write another like it. But if some one comes to you, with a little'quaver in the voice and a little moisture in the eye, and says, Thank you; you have helped me this morning, thank God and go home and try to write another like it. That is the end of preaching - to use theology to help life. The test of the sermon is its fruitfulness in life; and that is the test of theology.
