A Compilation of Schramm and SchneiderTranslated: First English EditionIn 1903, Erwin Schramm began one of the first in-depth, scientific studies of the artillery of Greece and Rome. With the assistance of Rudolf Schneider, he reconstructed several engines for the museum at Saalburg. In 1910, Schramm published his results, with a second edition appearing in 1918. Within, he discussed the processes by which he and Dr. Schneider first restored the ancient treatises on artillery and provides detailed descriptions of the extant Greek and Roman artifacts. Schramm then described in detail the reconstructed engines themselves, both their forms and their capabilities. General Schramm's work serves as much of the modern basis for research into this field. The 1918 edition included an additional chapter after the discovery of a 2nd century AD Roman catapult in the ruined town of Ampurias. This engine confirmed a great many of Schramm's hypotheses and provided a basis for reconsidering some of the other pieces. Details of a reconstructed engine based upon it were added to the end of what became Schramm's Chapter 5.Never having appeared in English before, this book combines both Schramm's 1918 edition and Schneider's supplement to the 1910 edition. These works are fundamental to understanding ancient artillery.

In the early 20th century, Erwin Schramm began a comprehensive study of ancient artillery. When he and his partner Rudolf Schneider published the results of their almost decade long series of experiments, Dr. Schneider continued their work beyond the Fall of Rome. Schneider started, much as he and Schramm had with the ancient era, by analyzing the extant period sources. This literary survey work became this book.Containing both a wealth of late ancient, medieval, and early modern sources and an insightful analysis thereof, Dr. Schneider's work is intended to broaden understanding of the final development of artillery prior gunpowder. With descriptions of the construction and use of trebuchets from as early as the Crusader are and as recently as the Second French Empire, the period sources are masterfully presented. Further, Dr. Schneider's analysis is one of the great literary feats of the 20th century, combining sources from 8 separate language variations. For the student of artillery wishing to develop and use their own medieval engines, this work will provide the best possible grounding in the capabilities and designs of Medieval artillery.

Julius Caesar S Civil War written by Julian Romane and has been published by Pen and Sword Military this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-07-06 with History categories.

Julian Romane examines the campaigns of Julius Caesar throughout the civil wars that followed his famous crossing of the Rubicon, through to the defeat of the final Pompeian diehards at the battle of Munda. He analyzes Caesar's generalship in the widest sense, with a strong emphasis on the logistical and financial effort required to put his legions in the field and keep them equipped, fed and paid. The attention given to this important but often-neglected aspect sets this account apart from many others. The author discusses the nature of late Republican Roman armies, describing their organization, tactics and equipment. The fact that such armies were employed both by and against Caesar only emphasizes the role of generalship in the outcome. This is followed by a detailed account of the strategic maneuvers in Caesar's epochal duel with Pompey the Great and the resultant battles at Dyrrhachium and Pharsalus. The final campaigns to mop up opposition in Spain and Africa are studied in equal detail to give a complete picture of Caesar's command performance in these history-shaping events.

"Defining a piece of artillery as a 'relatively complex engine powered by springs of resilient metal, composed of several mechanical devices, and designed to hurl bolts or shot over the longest possible range', Marsden presents a comprehensive account of the development and historical employment of ancient artillery from its invention in 399 BC to the collapse of the Roman Empire in the West (c. AD 400). Among the many topics raised are the influence of the introduction of artillery on warfare, the organization of artillery by states and monarchs, the obtaining of artificers and the training of artillery-men by ancient governments, and the effects of artillery on the design of fortifications. The work is based on the Greek and Latin texts describing the construction of catapults, ballistae and other machines translated in Greek and Roman Artillery: Technical Treatises"--

Our understanding of science, mathematics, and medicine today can be deeply enriched by studying the historical roots of these areas of inquiry in the ancient Near East and Mediterranean. The fields of ancient science and mathematics have in recent years witnessed remarkable growth. The present volume brings together contributions from more than thirty of the most important scholars working in these fields in the United States and Europe in honor of the eminent historian of ancient science and medicine Heinrich von Staden, Professor Emeritus of Classics and History of Science at the Institute of Advanced Study and William Lampson Professor Emeritus of Classics and Comparative Literature at Yale University. The papers range widely from Mesopotamia to Ancient Greece and Rome, from the first millennium B.C. to the early medieval period, and from mathematics to philosophy, mechanics to medicine, representing both a wide diversity of national traditions and the cutting edge of the international scholarly community.

Throughout human history, technological innovation has functioned as a driver of civilization and inspired many people's belief in progress. When it comes to warfare, where technology is applied with a cruel and deadly logic, a nuanced view is needed. From siege engines to drones, innovation has often served a less enlightened aim: elimination of the enemy. This collection of new essays from specialists in military history examines the interdependence between war and technology from a number of regional perspectives.
