In recent years a number of New Testament scholars have argued that Jewish beliefs and traditions about the principal angel hold the key to understanding why early Christians came to make such exalted claims about Jesus of Nazareth. Jewish and early Christian traditions about the archangel Michael provide a ready test for this thesis. For Michael is very often the principal figure in Jewish and early Christian angelology. Darrell D. Hannah examines Michael traditions from the Old Testament, Jewish apocalyptic, Qumran, Philo, the Rabbis, Merkabah mysticism, the New Testament, Christian apocalyptic, the New Testament Apocrypha, and the Fathers of the second century. From this mass of literature three forms of angelic Christology are evidenced. First, some early 'orthodox' Christians developed an 'theophanic angel Christology'. That is, they interpreted Old Testament passages about the 'angel of the Lord' as 'pre-incarnate manifestations' of Christ. Secondly, some 'heretical' forms of Jewish Christianity identified Christ as an incarnation of the highest archangel. Finally, some Christians found in Jewish speculations about the Principal Angel (Michael, Metatron, Yahoel, etc.) a conceptual framework within which to place a second divine figure. Principal angel traditions, particularly those about the archangel Michael, were useful for elucidating the significance of Christ. However, 'orthodox' Christians who made use of these traditions were very careful to avoid any implication that Christ possessed an angelic nature. 'Orthodox' Christians never regarded Christ merely as an angel, not even as the angel. The Shepherd of Hermas identified Christ with Michael, but would seem to have been unique in this.

Messianic Revelation In The Old Testament written by Gerard Van Groningen and has been published by Wipf and Stock Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1997-07-16 with Religion categories.

Books by evangelical scholars on messianism in the Old Testament are either outdated, too brief, or lack balance,Ó observes the author. Messianic Revelation in the Old Testament represents the most thorough, conservative analysis of the century. Van Groningen traces the messianic expectation as it is progressively revealed in the Hebrew Scriptures. He first introduces the messianic concept, defining its terms and uncovering its source. He finds these messianic presentations rooted in, and shaped by, divine revelation. The major part of this volume explores messianism's philological, historical, and theological aspects. The result of this study,Ó writes the author, reveals that the messianic concept refers to a royal-priestly-prophetic person...and his work.Ó Passages that deal with these messianic motifs have been selected for close scrutiny and evaluation.Ó The author believes that a correct understanding of messianism in the Old Testament requires a balanced hermeneutical approach - from exegeting the relevant texts and studying their historical context to interpreting prophecy and organizing its theological truths. In the words of the author, To omit one [element] is to do injustice to the Old Testament.Ó Van Groningen has included an extensive bibliography of both books and articles for those wishing to pursue additional study. A Scripture index helps one to locate the author's exegetical insights on various passages. An index of persons concludes the work.

Have you ever wondered why Jesus waited thousands of years of human history before making an appearance in the little town of Bethlehem? Why does it seem that the most important person to ever have walked the planet Earth only lived about 30 years and the Bible only describes with any detail only 3 of those years? The truth is, as the Apostle John reminds us, Jesus, “was in the beginning with God.” And, if He’s always been, there is all the more reason to trust Him. Discover how Jesus has always been the means by which God reveals Himself to His people. Learn how many of God’s people in the Old Testament had personal encounters with Christ. Behold the wonder of a God who makes His presence known to His people. His visible presence, Jesus Christ.

This book contains the full texts of the three separate Waters of Creation volumes by three Reformed divines: John Owen, Peter Allix, and Gerard De Gols (minus the appendices of quotations from various sources) on Christ in the Old Testament. It has been titled The Angel of Yahweh: in Jewish & Christian History. John Owen: "Oh yes. Owen the unassailable. Unfortunately for modern readers, he rather has the reputation of being Owen the unattainable. But not to fear! Thanks to the skillful editing of my friend Doug Van Dorn, Owen is a clear and present danger to modern unbelief and dullness of heart regarding the OT appearances of Christ. This is Owen at his best, glorying in the mysterious revelations of God the Son to men of old." Luke WalkerPastor, Redeeming Cross Community Church, MinneapolisAuthor, John Owen: The Prince of Puritans, Host of Wrath and Grace RadioPeter Allix: "Genesis 48:15-16 is one of those crucial Old Testament passages that few Bible students know about but, once they do, wonder how pastors and theologians they read missed it. The passage is at the core of the Old Testament's presentation of a Godhead-specifically, Christology-for the passage identifies one particular angel as God himself in human form who redeemed the people of God. The truth is, early church thinkers, Reformation writers, and even rabbinical authorities understood its implications. This reprinting of Peter Allix's centuries-old dissertation demonstrates that awareness and thus provides an important service to the Church. Van Dorn's edition presents the insights of generations past for the benefit of contemporary students of the Bible."Dr. Michael S. HeiserPh.D., Hebrew Bible and Semitic Studies. University of Wisconsin-MadisonGerard De Gols: "Some ancient rabbis viewed the Angel of Yahweh as a hypostatization of God. Many church fathers took that a step further and identified the Angel as the pre-incarnate Christ. Scholars of the Protestant Reformation affirmed Christ's pre-incarnate presence in the Old Testament, including Gerard De Gols. Not every text De Gols adduces, or argument he marshals, is equally convincing. But the cumulative force of his exegesis is persuasive and his thesis irresistible: the Son of God is recognized and worshiped as God not only in the New Testament but also in the Old. What's more, as John the Baptist prepared the way for Christ, this little volume will prepare the reader for Matt Foreman and Doug Van Dorn's much anticipated and forthcoming work on the Angel of the LORD."Dr. Robert Gonzales Jr.Dean, Reformed Baptist SeminaryAuthor: Where Sin Abounds
