1974/5: After the Revolution of the Carnations, Portugal is transformed into a communist state. Capitalists are ruthlessly persecuted and the liberated Portuguese colony of Angola is thrust into one of the bloodiest civil wars in history. The fabled Angolan diamond mines are closed down, but not before a group of refugees escape with a hoard of the precious gems. Their lives promise wealth and success, but a legacy of revenge and greed will eventually find them all, with fatal consequences. 2008: A millionaire businessman drowns in the swimming pool of his mansion in Marbella; a wealthy Frenchman is killed while skiing in the Swiss Alps; and a Portuguese playboy and a prostitute are found murdered together in a seedy New York apartment. The series of seemingly unconnected deaths sets two women Jenny Bishop, a young English widow, and Angolan born Leticia da Costa on a terrifying journey into the past to revisit the Portuguese revolution and the Angolan civil war. Together they begin to unlock a 30 year old mystery that promises to change their lives forever if they survive to reveal the truth. THE ANGOLAN CLAN takes the reader on a heart-stopping roller coaster ride, from past to present and back again. It is a deadly intercontinental treasure hunt laced with secrets, deceit and murder. The prize is a fortune in Angolan diamonds... or death at the hands of a pathological killer. The perfect read for fans of Frederick Forsyth, Wilbur Smith, Gerald Seymour and Clive Cussler.

The Ethnography Of Southwestern Angola written by Carlos Estermann and has been published by Holmes & Meier Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1976 with History categories.

This is the English translation of the major work of Father Estermann, who spent nearly all his adult life as a Roman Catholic missionary in southern Angola, much of it in a leading capacity. A prolific amateur ethnographer, the author organized his work in a traditional anthropological format, divided by major tribal group. The text is largely a generalized synthesis of personal observation and field notes and is of limited interest to the political and economic historian. As background to the narrative accounts and more recent historical analyses of the peasant societies of the region, it nonetheless carries authority as the expression of a lifetime's careful observation, and does occasionally record specific original detail. The English edition is translated and edited by Gordon D. Gibson. See also a collection of articles by Esterman: Etnografia de Angola (Sudoeste e Centro). Colectanea de Artigos Dispersos, Vol. 1 (Lisbon: Instituto de Investigacao Cientifica Tropical, 1983, 483 p.). (Eriksen/Moorsom 1989).

Risk Management In A Hazardous Environment written by Michael Bollig and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-05-10 with Social Science categories.

A research focus on hazards, risk perception and risk minimizing strategies is relatively new in the social and environmental sciences. This volume by a prominent scholar of East African societies is a powerful example of this growing interest. Earlier theory and research tended to describe social and economic systems in some form of equilibrium. However recent thinking in human ecology, evolutionary biology, not to mention in economic and political theory has come to assign to "risk" a prominent role in predictive modeling of behavior. It turns out that risk minimalization is central to the understanding of individual strategies and numerous social institutions. It is not simply a peripheral and transient moment in a group’s history. Anthropologists interested in forager societies have emphasized risk management strategies as a major force shaping hunting and gathering routines and structuring institutions of food sharing and territorial behavior. This book builds on some of these developments but through the analysis of quite complex pastoral and farming peoples and in populations with substantial known histories. The method of analysis depends heavily on the controlled comparisons of different populations sharing some cultural characteristics but differing in exposure to certain risks or hazards. The central questions guiding this approach are: 1) How are hazards generated through environmental variation and degradation, through increasing internal stratification, violent conflicts and marginalization? 2) How do these hazards result in damages to single households or to individual actors and how do these costs vary within one society? 3) How are hazards perceived by the people affected? 4) How do actors of different wealth, social status, age and gender try to minimize risks by delimiting the effect of damages during an on-going crisis and what kind of institutionalized measures do they design to insure themselves against hazards, preventing their occurrence or limiting their effects? 5) How is risk minimization affected by cultural innovation and how can the importance of the quest for enhanced security as a driving force of cultural evolution be estimated?
