That which belongs to the manners and economy of insects, and where there was the least room for originality. They enter more fully, how ever, into the other branch, viz. That which belongs to the amatomi cal, physiological, and technical parts of the work. As far as regards the general physiology and internal anatomy, they have done little more than bring together and combine the Observations of other naturalists who have attended to these branches but the external anatomy they have examined for themselves, through the whole class of insects. Here they are assuredly entitled to the praise of having thrown much new light upon the subject, particularly by pointing out and giving names to many parts never before noticed. Excerpt from The Animal Kingdom, Vol. 1 of 4: Arranged According to Its Organization, Serving as a Foundation for the Natural History of Animals, and an Introduction to Comparative Anatomy In presenting this version of the "Animal Kingdom" of the celebrated Cuvier to the British public, the Translator feels assured that he has only acted in compliance with the wishes of the most intelligent portion of the community, inasmuch as the great deficiency in our language of a complete work in this grand department of Natural History is thus supplied in a manner that it is impossible to excel. It is essential for the reader to understand that the attempts hitherto made by English authors to enrich British scientific literature with the labours of Cuvier, have been confined to the translation of the first edition of the "Regne Animale," which made its appearance so far back as the year 1816. With respect to that translation, it is not necessary that we should dwell upon it farther than to observe, that it is the version of a work which may now be deemed to be completely superseded. The great French author himself, indeed, has acknowledged the imperfections of his first edition, as compared with the last, which is now enriched with the results of labours, whereby, during the interval of twelve years, an immense progress is declared by Cuvier to have been effected in this science. It is scarcely necessary to add, that no part of those labours, and no portion of that improvement, failed to be examined by this indefatigable naturalist. His connection with the government of France, his reputation throughout Europe, and his consequent unbounded facilities of communication with fellow-labourers in all quarters of the globe, gave to Cuvier opportunities of procuring information of new facts, or corrections of former errors, such as could not be accessible to almost any other individual. From considering these facts, the reader will not fail to conclude that a difference, to no small amount, must necessarily exist between the former and the latter edition of the "Animal Kingdom;" nor will he, upon due examination, be prepared to deny that the latter is essentially a new and distinct work, from the number of alterations and improvements which have been incorporated with it. Cuvier records, with die most grateful expressions, his sense of the value of the information derived by him from the vast number of faithfully executed figures in Natural History which were supplied by recent travellers. The difficulties presented in the arrangement of the synonymes in the nomenclature of animals were also found by our great author very seriously diminished when he came to prepare the second edition of his "Regne Animale." This volume is rich in both quantity and quality. It offers beautiful insights into the world of the mind in its relation to the body on the one hand, and to the soul on the other. Interestingly, in the conception of Hazrat Inayat Khan, the mind includes the heart: thinking and feeling are not separate. The matter is discussed from three different angles. In the Book of Health Hazrat Inayat Khan presents a picture of health and healing which rises above the controversies between traditional and 'western' professionals. Moreover, it appeals directly to both ordinary man and healers. It sets forth the basic laws governing the divine healing power as well as several methods for its application. Quite another perspective is offered in Mental Purification. This collection of papers deals with the workings and hygiene of the mind and heart. One comes to the understanding of how to "manage" the mind, both for living everyday life and for spiritual development. Rather it implies how leaving the world physically or mentally. Rather it implies how to deal with life and yet keep your balance by proper attunement. The Mind-world expands on this subject matter resulting in a sort of travel guide` through the world of the mind. Although it is highly practical, yet it never substitutes for your own options and decisions. It is like a foundation on which to build your individual life. Sufi Hazrat Inayat Khan (Baroda 1982-Delhi 1927) provides a beautiful guidebook for your inner path. It contains neither prescriptions nor do's and don'ts. You may be provided with insight and understanding which may be as a welcome in the circle of Sufi friends, or as a silent companion on your further way. "The soul is called Atman, which means happiness or bliss itself. It is not that happiness belongs to the soul; it is that the soul itself is happiness." This inspiring book covers almost all aspects of the life of someone who chooses to go the way of self-unfoldment and self-realization. It refers to the struggle of life, its intoxication and its deeper side. The aim, meaning and purpose of life are discussed. What is wanted in life? In this work, the Suri mystic discusses the basic laws governing the mind's influence on the body, which he considers greater than that of the physical body on the mental existence, and he emphasises the need for a stronger awareness of the possibilities which spiritual healing can offer. Mental Purification is a collection of lectures on the working and hygiene of the mind in relation to the spirit. This part conveys in a beautiful way the synthesis that can be gained between inner life and life in the world. The volume concludes with the Mind World- which in the terms of the Sufi poets is called 'The palace of Mirrors' - an expression which Inayat Khan takes as symbolising on different levels, the whole of life.
