In Raymond Chandler's seminal hardboiled detective novel, "The Big Sleep," readers are drawn into the gritty underbelly of Los Angeles through the lens of private investigator Philip Marlowe. The narrative weaves a complex tapestry of intrigue, rich with atmospheric descriptions and sharp, incisive dialogue that illuminates the moral ambiguity of its characters. Chandler masterfully employs a first-person perspective that immerses the reader in the protagonist's wry observations, reflecting both the era's disillusionment and the labyrinthine nature of crime and corruption that defines the narrative's essence. Set in the late 1930s, this work encapsulates a pivotal moment in American literature where the detective genre transcended mere entertainment to explore deeper societal issues, reinforced by Chandler's innovative use of style and structure. Raymond Chandler, a British-born American author, was heavily influenced by his own experiences in the world of corporate America and the turmoil of the Great Depression. His keen understanding of both the seedy and sophisticated elements of Los Angeles society provided a fertile ground for crafting layered characters and intricate plots. This background, coupled with a tumultuous personal life, drove Chandler to create a poignant exploration of justice in a morally gray world, establishing his place as a foundational figure in crime literature. "The Big Sleep" is essential reading for anyone interested in the evolution of the detective novel, offering not only an engaging mystery but also profound insights into human nature and societal flaws. Chandler's vivid prose and Marlowe's unforgettable character render this work a timeless classic, inviting readers to ponder the ambiguities of morality while being entertained by an intricately plotted narrative.

Raymond Chandler Romantic Ideology And The Cultural Politics Of Chivalry written by Anthony Dean Rizzuto and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-12-03 with Fiction categories.
Raymond Chandler, Romantic Ideology, and the Cultural Politics of Chivalry responds to the general consensus that Philip Marlowe represents a chivalric knight out of romance. The book argues that this commonplace reading requires a stunningly rosy rewriting of Marlowe, knighthood, chivalry, and romance. The book offers a history of the cultural politics of chivalry from the Middle Ages through British Romanticism to the modern United States, exposing the elitism, violent masculinism, racism, and ethno-national othering harbored within. Rizzuto also considers the survival of the chivalric ideology after World War I, and argues that the narrative of the Great War destroying chivalry rewrites the ghastly history of warfare. Touching on Chandler throughout these cultural histories, the book then directly confronts the question of knighthood and romance in the Marlowe novels. Rizzuto identifies an explicit rejection of romance in the service of hardboiled gender, class, and genre norms, including a seldom-remarked pattern of violence against women and sexual assault. The volume concludes by offering some ideas about Chandler’s motivations and the reception of the Marlowe novels.

The stunning new novel from the highly-acclaimed author of The Panopticon It's November of 2020, and the world is freezing over. Each day colder than the last. There's snow in Israel, the Thames is overflowing, and an iceberg separated from the Fjords in Norway is expected to drift just off the coast of Scotland. As ice water melts into the Atlantic, frenzied London residents evacuate by the thousands for warmer temperatures down south. But not Dylan. Grieving and ready to build life anew, he heads north to bury his mother's and grandmother's ashes on the Scottish islands where they once lived. Hundreds of miles away, twelve-year-old Estella and her survivalist mother, Constance, scrape by in the snowy, mountainous Highlands, preparing for a record-breaking winter. Living out of a caravan, they spend their days digging through landfills, searching for anything with restorative and trading value. When Dylan arrives in their caravan park in the middle of the night, life changes course for Estella and Constance. Though the weather worsens, his presence brings a new light to daily life, and when the ultimate disaster finally strikes, they'll all be ready. Written in incandescent, dazzling prose, The Sunlight Pilgrims is a visionary story of courage and resilience in the midst of nature's most violent hour; by turns an homage to the portentous beauty of our natural world, and to just how strong we can be, if the will and the hope is there, to survive its worst. - NPR “Best Books of 2016” – Family Matters, Identity & Culture, Science Fiction & Fantasy, and Tales from Around the World

NATIONAL BOOK AWARD WINNER • An “eerie, brilliant, and touching” (The New York Times) modern classic about mass culture and the numbing effects of technology. “Tremendously funny . . . A stunning performance from one of our most intelligent novelists.”—The New Republic The inspiration for the award-winning major motion picture starring Adam Driver and Greta Gerwig Jack Gladney teaches Hitler Studies at a liberal arts college in Middle America where his colleagues include New York expatriates who want to immerse themselves in “American magic and dread.” Jack and his fourth wife, Babette, bound by their love, fear of death, and four ultramodern offspring, navigate the usual rocky passages of family life to the background babble of brand-name consumerism. Then a lethal black chemical cloud floats over their lives, an “airborne toxic event” unleashed by an industrial accident. The menacing cloud is a more urgent and visible version of the “white noise” engulfing the Gladney family—radio transmissions, sirens, microwaves, ultrasonic appliances, and TV murmurings—pulsing with life, yet suggesting something ominous.

“A remarkably detailed portrait of the famously hard-boiled writer” and creator of the popular gumshoe, Philip Marlowe (Publishers Weekly). What we know of Raymond Chandler is shrouded in secrets and half-truths as deceptive as anything in his magisterial novel The Long Goodbye. Now, drawing on new interviews, previously unpublished letters, and archives on both sides of the Atlantic, literary gumshoe Tom Williams casts light on this most mysterious of writers. The Chandler revealed is a man troubled by loneliness and desertion from an early age—experiences that fueled his writing as much as they scarred his life. Born in Chicago in 1888, his childhood was overshadowed by the cruel collapse of his parents’ marriage and his father’s alcohol-fueled violence. After his mother fled America, Chandler was schooled in London, but felt constrained by the stuffy English class system, eventually returning to the land of his birth, where—in corruption-ridden Los Angeles—he met his one great love: Cissy Pascal, a married woman eighteen years his senior. It was only during middle age, after his own alcoholism wrecked a lucrative career as an oilman, that Chandler seriously turned to crime fiction, although his success was to prove bittersweet. An obsessive attitude towards his craft, unrealized literary ambitions and a suicidal turn after Cissy’s death combined to prevent him from recapturing the verve of his earlier writing. But his legacy—the lonely, ambiguous world of Philip Marlowe—endures, compelling generation after generation of crime writers to go down mean streets. In this long-awaited new biography, the most thorough and comprehensive yet written, Tom Williams shadows one of the twentieth century’s true literary giants and considers how crime was raised to the level of art. Praise for A Beautiful Something in the Light “Williams dutifully records these facts but deftly keeps the reader interested. . . . [A Beautiful Something in the Light] is well researched, but because it is so well written it should be of interest to scholars and mystery fans alike.” —Washington Independent Review of Books “Outstanding. . . . Williams writes sensitively about the Cissy relationship and delves illuminatingly into the composition of Chandler’s masterpieces. . . . Thanks to his biography Chandler himself is a less mysterious something than he was.” —Sunday Times (UK) “Precise, kindly, and necessary.” —Scotland on Sunday (UK) “A clear-eyed, compassionate biography.” —Kirkus Reviews

Co-authors Sean Taylor (picture book author) and Alex Morss (ecologist, journalist, and educator) offer a gentle introduction to the concept of hibernation. In the frosty, quiet forest, the snow blankets the ground and the trees have shed their leaves. Where have all the animals gone? Are they asleep too? In each cutaway scene, see what the child cannot--that underground below his feet are dens with sleeping creatures, and within the hollow trunks of trees, animals are nesting. After the story, annotated illustrations explain the hibernation facts for each animal and what they will do when they wake up for spring. Cozy up as you expand your and your child's knowledge of the natural world.
