Excerpt from The Anointing of the Sick in Scripture and Tradition, Vol. 77: With Some Considerations on the Numbering of the Sacraments IN the winter of 1902 - 3, at the invitation Of Father Waggett, the Superior Of the Westminster House Of the Society Of S. John the Evangelist, I delivered 8 course Of four lectures on the Anoint ing Of the Sick in the Chapel of that House. These four lectures are contained in this book, but they have been enlarged and annotated and the subject has, I hope, been further elucidated by the addition Of five Appendices. The committee Of the Church Historical Society very kindly requested me to allow them to pub lish my lectures in the form of a book. I gladly consented, on condition that I might be allowed to make such additions to them as might seem on consideration to be desirable before they were put into print. It is perhaps hardly necessary to state here explicitly what would be in any case Obvious, namely that the interest Of the Church Historical Society in the lectures lies in the investigation of the history Of the doctrine and practice Of Unction, which constitutes the larger part of the book; and that, as a Society, it has no official views about the advantage or disadvantage of reviving the primitive use Of Unction in the Church Of England at the present time.
