Excerpt from The Anthem Book of the United Free Church of Scotland: Issued by Authority; Recommended for Use by the Synod of the Presbyterian Church of England, 1909 After the union of the Free and United Presb terian Churches in 1900, a desire was expressed that should be prepared for use in the congregations of the United Church, and accordingly, in 1902, the General Assembly remitted to the Praise Committee to prepare and issue an Anthem Book for use in congregations. In carrying out this remit the Committee have judged it expedient to restrict the collection to anthems in the rendering of which the congregation, as well as the choir, may take part. They have endeavoured to provide an adequate supply of material suited to the needs of the many congregations of the church where it is desirable that the music employed should be of a somewhat simple nature; but they have also included com positions presenting greater degrees of difficulty to meet the requirements of congregations of higher musical attainments. The anthems have been arranged according to their opening texts in the order of the books of Scripture, those with words not taken from Scripture being placed at the end; but for convenience in selection, a classified index has been added, in which the anthems are arranged according to topics. "American Methodist Worship is the most comprehensive history of worship among John Wesley's various American spiritual descendents that has ever been written. It will be a foundational book for anyone who wishes to understand how American Methodists have worshipped."-Sacramental Life "This groundbreaking study will help to reshape the way that we think about early American Methodist worship and how it connects to more recent trends."-- The Journal of Religion "Karen Westerfield Tucker's exhaustive examination of the history of American Methodist worship may indeed launch a new genre in liturgical historiography: denominational liturgical histories. The genius of this contribution is its comprehensiveness in examining for the first time the worship life of an American ecclesiological tradition."--Doxology

Hymns and hymnbooks as American historical and cultural icons. This work is a study of the importance of Protestant hymns in defining America and American religion. It explores the underappreciated influence of hymns in shaping many spheres of personal and corporate life as well as the value of hymns for studying religious life. Distinguishing features of this volume are studies of the most popular hymns (“Amazing Grace,” “O, For a Thousand Tongues to Sing,” “All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name”), with attention to the ability of such hymns to reveal, as they are altered and adapted, shifts in American popular religion. The book also focuses attention on the role hymns play in changing attitudes about race, class, gender, economic life, politics, and society.
