Includes three works, all dating from Nietzsche's last lucid months, that aim show him at his most stimulating and controversial: the portentous utterances of the prophet (together with the ill-defined figure of the Ubermensch) are forsaken, as wit, exuberance and dazzling insights predominate.

The Antichrist: Is probably the most well-known work of German Philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. He used this book to speak on his disdain for organized religion. One of his most talked about and enduring lines from the book is 'God is dead.' He believed that people should not turn to traditional Christian values but more toward science or nationalism. Nietzsche's title, The Antichrist, had less to do with the Bible and more to do with his view of the 'slave morality' of Western Christianity. The Antichrist goes on to say that Christianity put weakness where virtue should be. He felt that the civilization was moved to feel sorry for people and that sentiment made people weaker. He felt the best course of action was strength. If people could be stronger through self-reliance and things that were tangible, then society as a whole could be stronger.Nietzsche believed that each person should make their own way through individual experience. He felt that this goal should not be an aspiration that a person should hope to achieve, but one that should be lived in daily life.Ecce Homo: In late 1888, only weeks before his final collapse into madness, Nietzsche (1844-1900) set out to compose his autobiography, and Ecce Homo remains one of the most intriguing yet bizarre examples of the genre ever written. In this extraordinary work Nietzsche traces his life, work and development as a philosopher, examines the heroes he has identified with, struggled against and then overcome - Schopenhauer, Wagner, Socrates, Christ - and predicts the cataclysmic impact of his 'forthcoming revelation of all values'. Both self-celebrating and self-mocking, penetrating and strange, Ecce Homo gives the final, definitive expression to Nietzsche's main beliefs and is in every way his last testament.

Nietzsche's late works are brilliant and uncompromising, and stand as monuments to his lucidity, rigour, and style. This volume combines, for the first time in English, five of these works: The Antichrist, Ecce Homo, Twilight of the Idols, Nietzsche contra Wagner, and The Case of Wagner. Here, Nietzsche takes on some of his greatest adversaries: traditional religion, contemporary culture, and above all his one-time hero, the composer Richard Wagner. His writing is simultaneously critical and creative, putting into practice his alternative philosophical vision, which, after more than a hundred years, still retains its startling novelty and audacity. These new translations aim to capture something of the style and rhythm of the original German, so that the reader can get a sense of Nietzsche as not just a philosopher but also a consummate artist, capable of 'dancing with his pen', and as untimely as he claims to be.

"Ecce Homo and The Antichrist address the interrelated questions of what a philosopher is and what constitutes a philosophic life. Nietzsche's Legacy conceives of these twin books as the late major work that is meant to take the place of the Will to Power, a project Nietzsche had come to reject. The pair concludes his ¶uvre by both enacting the highest affirmation, the "revaluation of all values," and the most resolute negation, the sharpest criticism to which a philosopher has subjected Christianity. Yet in both books, Nietzsche is interested above all in the nature of the philosopher. How the Yes and the No go together, how to determine the relation between nature and politics, how Nietzsche's intention governs the political-philosophical double-face: this is the subject of Nietzsche's Legacy, which advances a new view of Nietzsche's philosophy as a whole"--

Although Nietzsche completed both Ecce Homo and The Antichrist by the end of 1888, they were considered so inflammatory that they were published only years later, in 1895 and 1908, respectively. Both are products of Nietzsche's last creative year. Yet Ecce Homo is relatively calm and tranquil, while The Antichrist is a jeremiad full of venom and vitriol. In Ecce Homo ("Behold the man") -- the words used by Pilate when he presented Jesus to the Jews -- Nietzsche presents us with an autobiographical tour de force, containing not only some of the finest, most incisive and instructive commentary on his own works, but also his singular comments on the "little things," which are, to him, "the fundamental affairs of life itself:" nutrition, climate, locality and recreation. His inclination to self-aggrandizement is offset by his comment, "I desire no 'believers, ' I think I am too malicious even to believe in myself. I have no wish to be a saint, I would rather be a buffoon. Perhaps I am a buffoon." The Antichrist is in fact one of the most devastating condemnations of Christianity ever; Nietzsche calls it "the one immortal blemish on mankind," the greatest sin possible against reality, against the spirit of the earth." Ever shocking, Nietzsche sets out to delegitimize the entire ethical-moral value system which modern western civilization has inherited. His analysis of Jesus and Paul as superlative Jewish types and his portrait of Pontius Pilate as a superior Roman type are thought-provoking, to say the least.

'I am not a man, I am dynamite.' Ecce Homo is an autobiography like no other. Deliberately provocative, Nietzsche subverts the conventions of the genre and pushes his philosophical positions to combative extremes, constructing a genius-hero whose life is a chronicle of incessant self-overcoming. Written in 1888, a few weeks before his descent into madness, the book sub-titled 'How To Become What You Are' passes under review all Nietzsche's previous works so that we, his 'posthumous' readers, can finally understand him aright, on his own terms. He reaches final reckonings with his many enemies - Richard Wagner, German nationalism, 'modern men' in general - and above all Christianity, proclaiming himself the Antichrist. Ecce Homo is the summation of an extraordinary philosophical career, a last great testament to Nietzsche's will.
