Compared with traditional remote sensing technologies, airborne Lidar data can provide researchers with additional 3D positional information, which is a key factor for advanced urban research, and particularly that of urban landscape ecology. Therefore, the need for applying Lidar data to a variety of disciplines is rapidly growing. However, the lack of remote sensing background makes the wider use of Lidar data highly difficult for scholars from other disciplines. In contrast to the majority of Lidar-related books that focus on sophisticated principles and general applications of Lidar data, this book provides the reader with a feasible framework for applying airborne Lidar data to urban research. In addition to providing a general introduction to the subject, this book explains in detail a series of case studies to demonstrate how these theoretical models can be employed to address practical urban issues. As such, this book not only provides Lidar scholars with a series of specifically designed research methods, but will also serve to inspire scholars from other disciplines, such as geographers, urban planners, ecologists, and decision-makers, with a complete framework of potential application fields.

Deep Learning (DL) is an effective approach for AI-based vehicular networks and can deliver a powerful set of tools for such vehicular network dynamics. In various domains of vehicular networks, DL can be used for learning-based channel estimation, traffic flow prediction, vehicle trajectory prediction, location-prediction-based scheduling and routing, intelligent network congestion control mechanism, smart load balancing and vertical handoff control, intelligent network security strategies, virtual smart and efficient resource allocation and intelligent distributed resource allocation methods. This book is based on the work from world-famous experts on the application of DL for vehicle networks. It consists of the following five parts: (I) DL for vehicle safety and security: This part covers the use of DL algorithms for vehicle safety or security. (II) DL for effective vehicle communications: Vehicle networks consist of vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-roadside communications. This part covers how Intelligent vehicle networks require a flexible selection of the best path across all vehicles, adaptive sending rate control based on bandwidth availability and timely data downloads from a roadside base-station. (III) DL for vehicle control: The myriad operations that require intelligent control for each individual vehicle are discussed in this part. This also includes emission control, which is based on the road traffic situation, the charging pile load is predicted through DL andvehicle speed adjustments based on the camera-captured image analysis. (IV) DL for information management: This part covers some intelligent information collection and understanding. We can use DL for energy-saving vehicle trajectory control based on the road traffic situation and given destination information; we can also natural language processing based on DL algorithm for automatic internet of things (IoT) search during driving. (V) Other applications. This part introduces the use of DL models for other vehicle controls. Autonomous vehicles are becoming more and more popular in society. The DL and its variants will play greater roles in cognitive vehicle communications and control. Other machine learning models such as deep reinforcement learning will also facilitate intelligent vehicle behavior understanding and adjustment. This book will become a valuable reference to your understanding of this critical field.

Drone Futures explores new paradigms in Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) in landscape and urban design. UAS or drones can be deployed with direct application to the built environment; this book explores the myriad of contemporary and future possibilities of the design medium, its aesthetic, mapping agency, AI, mobility and contribution to smart cities. Drones present innovative possibilities, operating in a ‘hover space’ between human scales of landscape observation and light aircraft providing a unique resolution of space. This book shows how UAS can be utilised to provide new perspectives on spatial layout, landscape and urban conditions, data capture for construction monitoring and simulation of design proposals. Author Paul Cureton examines both the philosophical use of these tools and practical steps for implementation by designers. Illustrated in full colour throughout, Drone Futures discusses UAS and their connectivity to other design technologies and processes, including mapping and photogrammetry, AR/VR, drone AI and drones for construction and fabrication, new mobilities, smart cities and city information models (CIMs). It is specifically geared towards professionals seeking to understand UAS applications and future development and students seeking an understanding of the role of drones and airspace in the built environment and its powerful geographic imaginary. With international contributions, multidisciplinary sources and case studies, Drone Futures examines new powers of flight for visualising, interpreting and presenting landscapes and urban spaces of tomorrow.

3D surface representation has long been a source of information describing surface character and facilitating an understanding of system dynamics from micro-scale (e.g. sand transport) to macro-scale (e.g. drainage channel network evolution). Data collection has been achieved through field mapping techniques and the use of remotely sensed data. Advances in this latter field have been considerable in recent years with new rapid-acquisition methods being developed centered around laser based technology. The advent of airborne and field based laser scanning instruments has allowed researchers to collect high density accurate data sets and these are revealing a wealth of new information and generating important new ideas concerning terrain characterisation and landform dynamics. The proposed book collates a series of invited peer revieved papers presented at the a conference on geoinformatics and LIDAR to be held at the National Centre for Geocomputation based in the National University of Ireland, Maynooth. Current constraints in field survey and DEM construction are reviewed together with technical and applied issues around the new technology. The utility of the data in process modelling is also covered. The book will be of great value to researchers in the field of geomorphology, geostatistics, remote sensing and GIS and will prove extremely useful to students and practitioners concerned with terrain analysis. The proposed work will: Highlight major technological breakthrough in 3D data collection. Feature examples of application across a wide range of environmental areas. Critically evaluate the role of laser based techniques in the environment. Detail theory and application of laser techniques in the natural environment.
