This volume was first published by Inter-Disciplinary Press in 2015. This volume explores the diversity of transnational catalysts of trauma and the interconnected nature of its global out workings. With reference to literary, filmic, visual and memorial representations, the volume reflects trauma as a multi-contextual impact emanating out of a macrocosmic and microcosmic social catalysts. The essays deal with broad issues of religious and political ideologies, imperial impulses, ethnic and national contestation and the myriad ways in which they drill down to the individual level - domestic violence and other violations, poverty and oppression, inequity, gnawing injustice and more. They also crisscross over domestic, national and global political frameworks. The essays speak to the imperative to represent painful collective pasts so as to alleviate its agony and acknowledge the right of its victims and perpetrators to give witness. By extension, it speaks to the practical and ideological imperative to engage issues of trauma, ethics and testimony.

The plethora of commentary from highly respected voices in a broad cross-section of academic disciplines, which V. S. Naipaul's death on 11 August 2018 elicited, ranged so widely, both cognitively and emotionally, that if a student of literature, unfamiliar with the Naipaulian era, read it all, they would have failed to make sense of the divergences. Allegations included that he 'was a cruel man', 'a scarred man', 'the darkest dungeons of colonialism incarnate: self-punishing, self-loathing, world-loathing, full of nastiness and fury', 'a ventriloquist for the nastiest cliches European colonialism had devised to rule the world with arrogance and confidence' and so on. How did German-speaking Holocaust survivors pursue literary careers in an often-indifferent postwar society? How did their literary life writings reflect their postwar struggles? This monograph focuses on four authors who bore literary witness to the Shoah - H. G. Adler, Fred Wander, Edgar Hilsenrath, and Ruth Klèuger. It analyzes their autofictional, critical, and autobiographical works written between the early 1950s and 2015, which depict their postwar experiences of writing, publishing, and publicizing Holocaust testimony. These case studies shed light on the devastating aftermaths of the Holocaust in different contexts. Adler depicts his attempts to overcome marginalization as a writer in Britain in the 1950s. Wander reflects on his failure to find a home either in postwar Austria or in the GDR. Hilsenrath satirizes his struggles as an emigrant to the US in the 1960s and after returning to Berlin in the 1980s.
