Minimalism as a concept was first used in the world of art to characterize the work of Donald Judd, Sol Le Witt and several others. Soon afterwards, this creative approach began to take hold in architecture, and the works of many contemporary architects are rooted in Minimalism to a greater or lesser degree. This publication goes to the heart of this trend, looking first at Loos, Wittgenstein, Mies van der Rohe, and Asplund, the definitive precursors of Minimalism. Then the works of today ́s protagonists, who include Tadao Ando, Luìs Barragàn, Alberto Campo Baeza, A.G. Fronzoni, Michael Gabellini, John Pawson, Claudio Silvestrin, Eduardo Souto Moura, and Peter Zumthor are covered extensively. A selection of texts contributed by the featured architects conclude the volume. With a clear even austere presentation, this book not only reflects its contents but provides a comprehensive overview of Minimalism, one of the dominant trends in contemporary architecture.

What is minimalism? Or, more specifically, what isn't? In this fascinating aesthetic voyage, three experts in the field of architecture and art history trace the development of minimalism as a style and offer perspectives on the directions the movement is taking as it morphs towards the future. In double-page spreads filled with color photographs of the most innovative minimalist projects, this book illustrates three principal movements: the traditional, as practiced by Herzog & de Meuron in early works, Adolf Krischanitz and Tadao Ando; the ambiguous, in which architects not commonly associated with minimalism, such as OMA or Zaha Hadid, use it for specific projects; and the subversive, which appropriates minimalist concepts across a variety of new fields as exemplified in the architecture of Shigeru Ban or Lacaton & Vassal.

From the furniture of Donald Judd to the cinema of Michelangelo Antonioni and Wim Wenders, from the music of John Cage to the buildings of Mies van der Rohe, Luis Barragan, and Arne Jacobsen, and on to the theater of Samuel Beckett and the fiction of Ernest Hemingway, Less is More: Minimalism in Architecture and Other Arts is dedicated to the phenomenon of Minimalism. Perhaps the most compelling multidisciplinary aesthetic of the past century, minimalism continues to resonate and still points towards the future for art, design, and culture. Quite a lot of the work that can be characterized as "minimalist" draws its effect from the dialectical interplay of two apparently contradictory forms--Minimalism and Maximalism--and the artists presented here testify to this tradition, drawing some unusual conclusions--but always making amazing art. Tautly and attractively designed, Less is More is an essential guide to all things minimalist.

This volume presents an introduction to minimalism. It describes movements in various forms of art and design, especially visual art and music, where the work is stripped down to its most fundamental features. It is rooted in the reductive aspects of Modernism, and is often interpreted as a reaction against Abstract expressionism and a bridge to Postmodern art practices.

The approach in this research is methodologically defined by architecture domain that is art within it, therefore what the visual means are materials including the light as material. The light is matter and material. In minimalism, materials shape space and express its essence, which is the irreducible minimum. As the material contained in the tangible components, and sentient, such a relationship is required for duality of materialization, which is achieved by the use of their material expression of immateriality. This expression gives the truth of immateriality (natural materials) and tactile value (structure and texture). Projects of minimalist objects fully accept the ability of the materials to be transformed when are formed by light, which allows them the "movement" (the ability to transform), so that they influence our senses. Emotional and perceptual relationship to light help us to understand the buildings because light is a substance through which we move as it moves through us. By researching of materials and light in the way of its application, can be achieved understanding of minimalism in the architecture as an idea.

As an architectural aesthetic, minimalism has influenced not only homeowners' residential designs, but also commercial spaces.By expressing fewer ideas, it is possible to emphasize them more strongly. The admirer's attention is not divided among secondary and tertiary distraction, but remains focused on the fundamental role of the space itself, be it a residential living room, an expansive sports center, a homeowner's private study, a multi-purpose educational space, or anything else. New Minimalist Architecture looks at 21 such spaces from around the world, each of which reflects the most inspired uses of minimalism in architecture today.
