Sir Ernest George (1839-1922) was one of England's greatest architects of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He specialised in domestic work and was responsible for beautiful and imaginative houses in both town and country, and with his three successive partners, he carried out over 200 works both in Britain and abroad. He was also a watercolourist of considerable stature whose work in the medium was acclaimed in his own time. This richly illustrated book is the first study of the man and his work and will establish him as one of the major names in his profession. His life and career is fully documented, the buildings are described and a full catalogue of works is provided. A special feature is a study of pupils and assistants who passed through George's office, including several who went on to be famous and successful - Edwin Lutyens, Guy Dawber, J. J. Joass, R. Weir Schultz - and also the first woman to be become a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects, Ethel Mary Charles. Hilary Grainger is a dean at the London College of Fashion and is the recognised expert on George and his architecture. She is also a leading authority on the architecture of cremation and is the chair of the Victorian Society.

Despite seven out of ten people in Scotland choosing cremation, in many ways crematoria are 'invisible' buildings, visited only by necessity, and they have not received the attention they deserve. Crematoria present a real challenge for architects. They are paradoxical buildings: religious and secular, functional and symbolic, required to satisfy the practical and emotional needs of all faiths and none. This book provides architectural 'biographies' of Scotland's thirty-one crematoria, explaining their increasing relevance in contemporary Scottish society and pointing to Scotland's distinctive contribution to the progress of cremation and the architecture of crematoria. Many leading architects and craftsmen, including Sir Robert Lorimer and Sir Basil Spence, produced designs of great architectural merit, and Scottish local authorities led the way in designing some of the most progressive crematoria in the UK. These singular, often contested buildings, many in magnificent natural landscape settings, reveal a great deal about the complex, changing and distinctive attitudes to death and funeral rituals in Scotland.Beautifully illustrated with drawings, plans and specially commissioned photographs by Steve Wallace, formerly of Historic Environment Scotland, this pioneering book establishes the significance of a neglected area of Scotland's cultural heritage.

Victorian furnishers and decorators Collinson & Lock were a model of the art furniture business of the last quarter of the nineteenth century. This book is the first wide-ranging study of this once highly important company. It will give insights into the workings and productions of a London furnishing business in the period. It also provides information on a wide variety of topics including furniture design developments, interior design styles, business practices, working practices and techniques, and the firm’s customers and competitors. Clive Edwards first considers the structure of the London ‘art furniture’ trade and its development to locate the firm in its community. He then traces the growth of the firm’s business, its involvement with important international exhibitions, the designers they worked with, and the furniture and interiors they produced. This important book then outlines and discusses Collinson & Lock’s creations ranging from seminal pieces that were designed for an exclusive clientele, to those displayed at national and international exhibitions between 1871 and 1900, through to batch produced objects that still maintained the quality and design that the firm was famous for. The involvement of the firm with both public and private interior decoration commissions is also examined through case studies, including those in the Anglo-Japanese, Queen Anne, Old English, and Renaissance styles used in the later Victorian period. Drawing on the author's extensive knowledge of nineteenth-century furniture and interiors, this book meets a need for a fully researched and illustrated reference work on this famous firm. If you have an interest in the history of furniture and interior design, if you are involved with furniture collections either on a private basis or professionally, or you simply have an interest in the decorative arts and culture of the period, this book should be on your shelves.

Seventy per cent of British families now choose cremation for their funerals, a rapid change in traditional death customs. This is the first book to investigate why cremation replaced burial. It examines the political, religious, economic and social reasons behind personal choice and sets them in a European context. This study is doubly timely with the expanding scholarly interest in death studies, and the new media interest in the British way of death.
