This is the first volume dedicated to Aristophanes' comedy Peace that analyses the play for a student audience and assumes no knowledge of Greek. It launches a much-needed new series of books each discussing a comedy that survives from the ancient world. Six chapters highlight the play's context, themes, staging and legacy including its response to contemporary wartime politics and the possible staging options for flying. It is ideal for students, but helpful also for scholars wanting a quick introduction to the play. Peace was first performed in 421 BC, perhaps only days before the signing of a peace treaty that ended ten years of fighting between Athens and Sparta (the Archidamian War). Aristophanes celebrates this prospect with an imaginative fantasy involving his hero's flight on a gigantic dung-beetle to Olympus, the rescue of the goddess Peace from her imprisonment in a cave, and her return to a Greece weary of ten years of war. Like most of the poet's comedies, this play is heavy on fantasy and imagination, light on formal structure, being an exuberant farce that champions the opponents of War and celebrates the delights of the return to country life with its smells, food and drink, its many pleasures and none of the complications that war brings in its wake.

“A Sigma Rhoan should believe in the existence of the Almighty God who created this earth and the whole universe. If he does not believe in God, to me, he is not a true Sigma Rhoan,” Attorney George Briones firmly stressed to his brothers, or brods for short, with his oratorical voice his conviction of what a true Sigma Rhoan is. The founders of the UP Sigma Rho Fraternity were patriotic students of the University of the Philippines in Manila. They were also deeply religious, and their faith in God, coupled with their patriotic spirit, served as their guiding principles in organizing the UP Sigma Rho in 1938 – three years before the Japanese invasion of the Philippines. The founders of the fraternity were all students of the UP College of Law which was then based in Padre Faura in Manila.

Countering the dystopic and the apocalyptic, Star Trek's Philosophy of Peace and Justice introduces political philosophical reflections on peace, justice, and non-violence through dramatic plots in the utopian Star Trek Universe. Using key insights from a global array of philosophers, thinkers, and activists, including Martin Luther King Jr., Cesar Chavez, Angela Davis, Martha Nussbaum, Johan Galtung, and Desmond Tutu, José-Antonio Orosco guides readers through different Star Trek episodes, applying key concepts from peace and justice studies. In the Star Trek Universe, seemingly impossible realities, based on peace and justice exist indefinitely in a post-scarcity society marked by economic cooperation. Orosco continues its bold utopian mission and brings new challenges to the field of peace and justice studies that center anti-racism and intersectional theory to encourage the exploration, over conquest, of our own galaxy.

But what they find there is far from what they expected, and Taemon’s understanding of the world is challenged. Diodoros of Sicily’s book XIX is the main source for the history of the Diadochoi, Alexander the Great’s Successors, from 317 to 311 BCE. With the first full-scale commentary on this text in any language Alexander Meeus offers a detailed and reliable guide to the complicated historical narrative and the fascinating ethnographic information transmitted by Diodoros, which includes the earliest accounts of Indian widow burning and Nabataean culture. Studying both history and historiography, this volume elucidates a crucial stage in the creation of the Hellenistic world in Greece and the Near East as well as the confusing source tradition. Diodoros, a long neglected author indispensable for much of our knowledge of Antiquity, is currently enjoying growing scholarly interest. An ample introduction discusses his historical methods and sheds light on his language and style and on the manuscript transmission of books XVII-XX. By negotiating between diametrically opposed scholarly opinions a new understanding of Diodoros’ place in the ancient historiographical tradition is offered. The volume is of interest to scholars of ancient historiography, Hellenistic history, Hellenistic prose and the textual transmission of the Bibliotheke.

From Plataea To Potidaea written by E. Badian and has been published by JHU Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1993 with Art categories.

From the Greek victory over Persian forces on the field of Plataea to the Athenian blockade of the rebel city of Potidaea - key events in the Persian and Peloponnesian wars, respectively - the half-century of Greek history known as the Pentecontaetia is an era for which sources are few and interpretation is controversial. Now, eminent historian E. Badian brings together six essays - one new and five revised for this volume - that shed new light on one of the key periods in the history of the ancient world. How was the Persian War finally settled, and what was the nature of the relationship that emerged between the two great powers of the Aegean, Athens and Persia? Is it possible to determine the sequence of events of the half-century between Xerxes' retreat and the outbreak of the Peloponnesian War? Should the general picture of Thucydides as the objective and "scientific" historian be revised, at least as far as this period is concerned? In addressing these and other questions, E. Badian provides the penetrating insights and rigorous scholarly argument, to which his readers have become accustomed.
