Excerpt from The Argument for Manual Training No phase of the history of civilization is more in teresting than that which deals with the theory and practice of education. In the educational theory of an age we find the summation of its philosophy in the educational practice, an epitome of its activities. The school is a microcosm, and properly studied it will furnish us the clue to the proper estimation of the status of every problem that vexed a particular generation. It will not solve those problems, but it will tell us how its contemporaries tried to solve them. The reason for this is that the school is the point of contact between each generation and its successor. It is the only point at which one gene ration meets its successor systematically and with a definite purpose in view. And to the attainment of this purpose - the preparation of the rising generation to take its place in life - it brings all its best energies and all its ripest experience. Excerpt from Suggestions and Exercises for Manual Training There is another, an economic question, involved in this work It has been demonstrated beyond any possibility of doubt that older pupils, boys especially, are not so anxious to drop out of those schools where manual training is taught. They see in it something that may touch their lives in the future. The relation of algebra, geometry, Latin, and kindred subjects to the necessities of every day life cannot be so readily seen and conse quently when they reach that stage of young manhood or young woman hood from which they begin to look over into real life they get restless, lose interest, and usually leave school. But if such young men and young women can be kept in school by manual training they will learn not only manual training and receive the benefits involved therein but in connection with the subject they would also be taught something of other higher branches and thus their higher powers of thought, which are ordinarily untouched owing to their youth and the subjects taught in the lower grades of school work, would be developed. This alone is a powerful argument in favor of the introduction of some phase of manual training in all schools. Manual training is also an element of safety in our social life. The more of it a young person does in a systematic manner the more he touches real life; the young man, industrial life and the young woman, domestic life. This touch creates an understanding of and sympathy with labor thus bridging a deep and widening chasm in this country. Excerpt from The Educational Value of Manual Training Consisting of an Examination of the Arguments Presented in the Report of the National Council Committee on Pedagogics at Nashville, July, 1889 There is every indication that the interest in the aims, methods and results of manual training is spreading and deepening. Extravagant notions are being laid aside, and correct and reasonable views arc taking their place. Persons who had supposed that there was nothing in it, - that it was only a craze, are finding that there is something in it worthy of consideration and respect. Those wild enthusiasts who claim everything for it are gradually forming a class by themselves quite apart from those who are steadily testing every theory by careful practice. There is, however, much confusion as to the true scope, meaning and value of manual training. It is my sincere wish to do what I can to give trustworthy information on the subject, to the end that manual training may take its true place in American education. Accordingly, I have gathered here certain reviews and discussions which I hope will be found useful. I do not here present any full discussion of the economic value of manual training, but it must not be inferred that that value is not high. On the contrary, I think its great practical utility would be a sufficient argument for its introduction into certain grades of all schools, were its educational value much less than it is. But its educational value is great as well as its economic, and since I am now concerned in setting forth the former, utility arguments may be left to present themselves. Excerpt from Development of Manual Training, in the United States It is the purpose of this thesis to trace out the development of Manual Training in the United States; to state the causes which were responsible for its introduction; to suggest the benefits derived; and to give some idea of the present trend of educational thought in regard to the subject. Much has been written in recent years about Vocational Education, Industrial Training, Technical Training, Mechanic Arts, and Trade Schools. Discussion of these forms of training does not lie within the scope of this paper, except when they are so interrelated with Manual Training that it is practically impossible to divorce them. Domestic Science is not treated under a separate heading, but is discussed in its relation to Manual Training. Much that is said concerning Manual Training is true, also, of Domestic Science. What Manual Training is to the boys, Domestic Science is to the girls. Much confusion has arisen among the uninitiated because of the different terms used, hence, it is of prime importance that the distinction between Manual Training and the other forms of training be made perfectly clear. A Manual Training course, as outlined at the present time, consists of a graded course in wood, iron, and machinists' work; systematic and continued instruction in free-hand and mechanical drawing, combined with academic studies as co-ordinated departments. It is not the purpose of Manual Training to teach trades, but rather to make the boy familiar with the use of tools. It is disciplinary in that it endeavors to train the hand for the purpose of securing at the same time the training of the mind, through the senses of touch and perception. At the same time the eye is being trained to accurate observation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Manual Training in Elementary Schools for Boys, Vol. 2 If we call that metnoa' which is a rational and systematic progress towards a well-defined Object, manual training in the school at N'a'as constitutes a method indeed, and one that possesses an unquestionable claim to originality. Nothing in this system is left to chance. It is the result Of experiments covering many years, with the constant desire of giving practical form and efficiency to primary instruc tion in manual work. M. Salomon is in favor Of the mod ern conception Of the common school, and has endeavored to be faithful to the fundamental principles Of the science Of education concerning which there has been little ground Of difference since Montaigne, Comenius, Rousseau, Pesta 'lozzi and Froebel. Excerpt from A Manual of Debate In compiling this book, the aim has been to make a compact manual for beginners in debate. With this aim in view, many of the technicalities of Logic and Argumentation have been omitted, and only those logical forms have been included which seem essential. The advantage of such a book should be to give pupils enough of the theory to make their practice debates intellectually profitable, and to do this without unnecessary loss of time. The Manual is intended for use as a drill book. Hence, in immediate connection with each logical form is given the method of its refutation; examples are added for practice; and the Summary is in the form of a table for ready reference. This table should ultimately be committed to memory. By careful study of the forms and their refutations, and with sufficient practice, the debater should be able to recognize the logical forms of the arguments presented by an opponent, and each form should then suggest its possible refutation. For instance, on hearing an argument from Example, the debater should be able to recognize the logical form at once, and he should also know at just what point in the example to look for the only possible fallacy. Excerpt from A Manual of Physical Training for Boys and Girls: For Use by Public-School Teachers, Parents, and the Superintendents, of Junior Societies in Churches Tms book is not an argument for strengthening our belief in the efficiency of physical training; rather, it is a short manual which will guide us to some of the best methods of developing the boy and girl. We already have faith in gym nasties and athletics, in games and plays, in competitive sports; but, having nailed our flag to the mast, let us now stand by our guns and protect the boy and the girl by so developing them morally and physically that their own bodies, their own minds, and the ideals that impel them to every voluntary act of life will form a bulwark against the slings and arrows that will assail them throughout their lives. The boy and girl will never get along better by being neglected, they will certainly be well armored and forewarned if they are trained early.
