The Arrangement of Three Sacred Concertos by Tomás Luis de Victoria, Brian F. Gurley, Doctor of Musical Arts: Choral Conducting. Abstract: The Doctoral Performance and Research submitted by Brian F. Gurley, under the direction of Beverly J. Taylor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, in the fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Musical Arts consists of the following: I. Written Project "The arrangement of three sacred concertos by Tomás Luis de Victoria." This 214-page written project is a study of Tomás Luis de Victoria's 1600 publication of an organ partitura and relevant performance practices of late 16th-century vocal polyphony. It addresses the collaborative use of the organ, the practice of transcription of vocal music for keyboard performance, ornamentation, and musical analysis of three selected works. The research was applied in the preparation of three new performing editions of sacred concertos: the Alma Redemptoris Mater à 8, the Salve Regina à 8, and the Magnificat sexti toni a 12. Presenting new insights into both the musical style and language and the compositional procedure of this contemporary of Palestrina, Lasso and Byrd, Eugene Cramer illuminates the extent to which Victoria's compositions are musically related. The book reveals that the falsobordone or fabord layed a much larger role in Victoria's music than has previously been thought. Cramer also demonstrates that Victoria's parody or imitation technique, especially in respect to his Masses of 1592, extended the parameters that are generally thought to be characteristic of works of this type. Of special interest is the discussion of thirty-eight works, including thirty-four psalm settings that are attributed to Victoria in extant manuscript sources. Extensively illustrated with over 130 musical examples, these studies will not only interest the serious student of sacred music, but also the performer, both the singer and the conductor alike.
