Well into the new millennium, the analog cassette tape continues to claw its way back from obsolescence. New cassette labels emerge from hipster enclaves while the cassette’s likeness pops up on T-shirts, coffee mugs, belt buckles, and cell phone cases. In Unspooled, Rob Drew traces how a lowly, hissy format that began life in office dictation machines and cheap portable players came to be regarded as a token of intimate expression through music and a source of cultural capital. Drawing on sources ranging from obscure music zines to transcripts of Congressional hearings, Drew examines a moment in the early 1980s when music industry representatives argued that the cassette encouraged piracy. At the same time, 1980s indie rock culture used the cassette as a symbol to define itself as an outsider community. Indie’s love affair with the cassette culminated in the mixtape, which advanced indie’s image as a gift economy. By telling the cassette’s long and winding history, Drew demonstrates that sharing cassettes became an acceptable and meaningful mode of communication that initiated rituals of independent music recording, re-recording, and gifting.

Adhesive tapes have recently been used more and more in design projects. The book features artwork in which tape is used illustratively. Because patterns are a popular theme in design, it also presents examples of interiors, fashion, furniture and architecture in which tape is used to create them. The images of the diverse, often humorous artwork and designs are supplemented by texts expounding on adhesive tape's phenomenal range of application. These include a list of 211 uses for duct tape from the USA, the country that invented the saying "God made the world, but it's held together with duct tape."

The cassette tape was revolutionary. Cheap, portable, and reusable, this small plastic rectangle changed music history. Make your own tapes! Trade them with friends! Tape over the ones you don't like! The cassette tape upended pop culture, creating movements and uniting communities. This entertaining book charts the journey of the cassette from its invention in the early 1960s to its Walkman-led domination in the 1980s to decline at the birth of compact discs to resurgence among independent music makers. Scorned by the record industry for "killing music," the cassette tape rippled through scenes corporations couldn't control. For so many, tapes meant freedom—to create, to invent, to connect. Marc Masters introduces readers to the tape artists who thrive underground; concert tapers who trade bootlegs; mixtape makers who send messages with cassettes; tape hunters who rescue forgotten sounds; and today's labels, which reject streaming and sell music on cassette. Their stories celebrate the cassette tape as dangerous, vital, and radical.

The American Art Tapes written by Nicolette Jones and has been published by Tate Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-10-19 with Art categories.

Tells the story of 1960s pop art through the voices of its creators In 1965, British artist and university lecturer John Jones left the United Kingdom with his wife and daughters to live in the United States for a year and interview some 100 artists. The family moved to Greenwich Village and spent three months on a road trip west to visit artists beyond the immediate reach of New York. Some of the artists, like Yoko Ono and Claes Oldenburg, became Jones's personal friends. Although Jones's daughter Nicolette was young, her memories of New York and their transAmerican adventure are vivid. Published here for the first time, this book presents a fascinating selection of Jones's edited conversations with American artists practicing in 1965-66. A foreword by Nicolette contextualizes the setting in which these interviews took place, and a further introduction amalgamated from Jones's lectures in which he drew on these conversations illustrates and explores the range of contrasting ideas behind what became known as pop art. Thanks to his personal interaction with the artists and his knowledge of their work, Jones became the foremost expert in the art of this period in the UK. Amid a unique family story, this is art presented not through the filter of art critics, but from the mouths of the practitioners. Jones's interviews explore a specific place and time: the United States in the 1960s, and are crucial reading for those wishing to understand the decade and the influence of American art and British tradition on each other, as well as anyone curious about the famous figures of the time and the thinking that gave rise to this extraordinarily fertile creative moment.

Like tying a Windsor knot or brewing a perfect cup of coffee, knowing how to hang art on your wall is a hallmark of everyday style and nuts-and-bolts know-how. The where, what, and whys of hanging art are an overlooked, under-appreciated line of inquiry. Most of us simply wing it with a quick eyeball and a swing of the hammer. How hard can it be? we think. What can go wrong? The answer, of course, is plenty: crumbling plaster, ruined antique laths, mismatched art hung too-close together, or a poorly-mounted photograph warping in its frame. But beyond the technical mishaps, there is a more essential lesson to be learned: The skill and consideration with which you decorate your home makes an aesthetic statement about the world you inhabit-and more importantly, when it's done right, it very clearly looks a whole lot better. Slim and stylish, How to Hang a Picture: And Other Essential Lessons for a Stylish Home is a user-friendly guidebook that details everything you need to know about hanging, framing, decorating and displaying art. If Strunk & White's Elements of Style was crossed with a no-nonsense how-to manual, you will have captured the tone and immediacy of How to Hang a Picture: simple rules and essential information presented with charm and intelligence.
