The Art of Allegiance explores the ways in which Spanish imperial authority was manifested in a compelling system of representation for the subjects of New Spain during the seventeenth century. Michael Schreffler identifies and analyzes a corpus of "source" material--paintings, maps, buildings, and texts--produced in and around Mexico City that addresses themes of kingly presence and authority as well as obedience, loyalty, and allegiance to the crown. The Art of Allegiance opens with a discussion of the royal palace in Mexico City, now destroyed but known through a number of images, and then moves on to consider its interior decoration, particularly the Hall of Royal Accord and the numerous portraits of royalty and government officials displayed in the palace. Subsequent chapters examine images in which the conquest of Mexico is depicted, maps showing New Spain's relationship to Spain and the larger world, and the restructuring of space in and through imperial rule. Although the book focuses on material from the reign of Charles II (1665-1700), it sheds light on the wider development of cultural politics in the Spanish colonial world.

Excerpt from The Oath of Allegiance: And Other Stories IT was the time of great purposes and small hopes; it was the time Of grand deeds and dark dreams; it was the time of glory and madness, Of love and despair; it was the time of the greatest motives and the noblest achievement, the truest praying and the bitterest suffering that our land and our day have known. The story which I have to tell, in SO far as it is a story at all, is a tale Of the war, and therefore not in the fashion. It is in such important particulars true that it may ask a respectful hearing, Since, in the matter Of which I have to speak, it will be found that the fact rather than the way Of putting the fact is the source Of interest. "Ferdinand Bol, one of Rembrandt's best-known pupils, made a unique ensemble of five wall-sized canvasses in the 1660s. This interdisciplinary study offers a unique perspective on this exceptional commission, identifying for the first time the origin and history of the paintings, until now shrouded in mystery, the paintings themselves scattered around the Netherlands. The recent restoration of the paintings provided the opportunity to conduct a 'forensic' technical investigation, which the author integrates with archival, historical, stylistic and cultural historical research. This integrated approach allows her to identify the painting's origin and the client: a wealthy, strict Calvinist widow from Utrecht who commissioned them over time, choosing themes which reflected her stance in the political and religious conflicts played out in her community."--OCLC

Excerpt from Allegiance, Vol. 2 of 2 I write instead of speaking, ' he said, 'in order that you may not be hurried, or, taken unawares, give an answer on the im pulse of the moment.' In another man an expression of such a fear might have been taken for sarcasm, but Lord Ralston had never been known to employ it. I wish you to consider' the subject fully and at your leisure, and to give me an answer on my return on Thursday. I need not say how much I hope it may be a favourable one.' Excerpt from The Oath of Allegiance to the United States The Duties and Obligations of those Citizens of the Confederate States falling within the lines of the enemy discussed, in their Moral and Political Bearings, with particular reference to the atrocities-practiced by Gen. Butler in New Orleans, in a letter addressed to the Hon. John Perkins, of Louisiana, upon the introduction of the following resolutions in the Confederate Congress, commending those persons who refused to take the oath. By Rev. B. M. Palmer, D.D., late of New Orleans. Joint Resolutions in commendation of the conduct of those citizens of Louisiana and other States who, falling within the lines of the enemy, have refused to take the oath of allegiance to the# United States. Resolved, That Congress views with pride the course pursued by the true men and women of the Confederacy, who, falling within the lines of the enemy, have resisted all appeals to their pecuniary interest and refused, in spite of pains and penalties, to foreswear their own government by taking an oath of allegiance to support that of the United States, and regards with peculiar satisfaction the conduct of those citizens of Louisiana, who, by refusing the oath and openly registering themselves enemies to the United States in the immediate presence and in defiance of General Butler's military authorities, have borne most nob testimony by their martyr-like courage to the patriotic spirit and Christian faith of our people. Resolved, That while such conduct has secured them the present respect and sympathy of all good people, it will be esteemed, in the future, a most honorable claim upon the gratitude of their country, and the highest evidence of their devotion to truth and principle. Between the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745 and the American Declaration of Independence, London artists transformed themselves from loosely organized professionals into one of the most progressive schools of art in Europe. In British Art and the Seven Years' War Douglas Fordham argues that war and political dissent provided potent catalysts for the creation of a national school of art. Over the course of three tumultuous decades marked by foreign wars and domestic political dissent, metropolitan artists—especially the founding members of the Royal Academy, including Joshua Reynolds, Paul Sandby, Joseph Wilton, Francis Hayman, and Benjamin West—creatively and assiduously placed fine art on a solid footing within an expansive British state. London artists entered into a golden age of art as they established strategic alliances with the state, even while insisting on the autonomy of fine art. The active marginalization of William Hogarth's mercantile aesthetic reflects this sea change as a newer generation sought to represent the British state in a series of guises and genres, including monumental sculpture, history painting, graphic satire, and state portraiture. In these allegories of state formation, artists struggled to give form to shifting notions of national, religious, and political allegiance in the British Empire. These allegiances found provocative expression in the contemporary history paintings of the American-born artists Benjamin West and John Singleton Copley, who managed to carve a patriotic niche out of the apolitical mandate of the Royal Academy of Arts.
