Animal Bodies Renaissance Culture written by Karen Raber and has been published by University of Pennsylvania Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-09-24 with Literary Criticism categories.

Animal Bodies, Renaissance Culture examines how the shared embodied existence of early modern human and nonhuman animals challenged the establishment of species distinctions. The material conditions of the early modern world brought humans and animals into complex interspecies relationships that have not been fully accounted for in critical readings of the period's philosophical, scientific, or literary representations of animals. Where such prior readings have focused on the role of reason in debates about human exceptionalism, this book turns instead to a series of cultural sites in which we find animal and human bodies sharing environments, mutually transforming and defining one another's lives. To uncover the animal body's role in anatomy, eroticism, architecture, labor, and consumption, Karen Raber analyzes canonical works including More's Utopia, Shakespeare's Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet, and Sidney's poetry, situating them among readings of human and equine anatomical texts, medical recipes, theories of architecture and urban design, husbandry manuals, and horsemanship treatises. Raber reconsiders interactions between environment, body, and consciousness that we find in early modern human-animal relations. Scholars of the Renaissance period recognized animals' fundamental role in fashioning what we call "culture," she demonstrates, providing historical narratives about embodiment and the cultural constructions of species difference that are often overlooked in ecocritical and posthumanist theory that attempts to address the "question of the animal."

While the dissection of bodies had already been allowed to form part of an education at European universities during the 1500s, an anatomical theatre was first established at the University of Copenhagen in 1644, that is to say, an auditorium where lectures on bodies could be held. In addition to serving the instruction of students and general research, it was here that professor of anatomy Thomas Bartholin demonstrated the existence of the thoracic duct and later the lymphatic vessels in a human being, an achievement bestowing immediate fame on Bartholin and resonating in learned circles throughout Europe. In 1662 Thomas Bartholin published A Short Description of the Anatomy House in Copenhagen. This book, which meticulously describes the layout of the Anatomy House together with the first eighteen years of its history, was composed in Latin, so that by this means it could make this institution known to an international public. These and other activities went on in the anatomical theatre until the great fire of 1728 in Copenhagen ravished it. Bartholin's publication survived, which in the narrower sense documents a part of the University's history and from a broader perspective gives an insight into the scientific ideal that provided the impetus behind anatomical studies in seventeenth-century Europe. Furnished with commentary by the editor Niels W. Bruun and an introduction by historian Morten Fink-Jensen, this first appearance of Bartholin's work in English, thus reaching a wider international audience, will undoubtedly consolidate its rightful position as an important contribution to the history of anatomical houses. The English translation was undertaken by Peter Fisher. The book contains 44 illustrations in colour and a revised critical edition of the Latin text by the editor.

Art And Anatomy In Renaissance Italy written by Domenico Laurenza and has been published by Metropolitan Museum of Art this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012 with Anatomy, Artistic categories.

Known as the "century of anatomy," the 16th century in Italy saw an explosion of studies and treatises on the discipline. Medical science advanced at an unprecedented rate, and physicians published on anatomy as never before. Simultaneously, many of the period's most prominent artists--including Leonardo and Michelangelo in Florence, Raphael in Rome, and Rubens working in Italy--turned to the study of anatomy to inform their own drawings and sculptures, some by working directly with anatomists and helping to illustrate their discoveries. The result was a rich corpus of art objects detailing the workings of the human body with an accuracy never before attained. "Art and Anatomy in Renaissance Italy "examines this crossroads between art and science, showing how the attempt to depict bone structure, musculature, and our inner workings--both in drawings and in three dimensions--constituted an important step forward in how the body was represented in art. While already remarkable at the time of their original publication, the anatomical drawings by 16th-century masters have even foreshadowed developments in anatomic studies in modern times.

This is the first book on this subject to be published in the English language for more than fifty years. It is a survey and anthology of the major developments, styles, and trends in anatomical illustration through more than 700 years. Anatomy was a preoccupation of renaissance scholars and artists in the universities and academies of Europe. By the mid 1500s sophisticated anatomy books were widely distributed. It was primarily the illustrations rather than the text that spread information on this descriptive science. This bookshows how anatomists and their collaborating artists presented the important aspects of their subjects to doctors, medical students, and others, coincidentally revealing their attitude to the living and the dead human body. A narrative history of the context in which these illustrations wereproduced is supplemented by a precise consideration of the anatomy shown in each plate reproduced. The book will appeal to anyone with an academic interest in anatomy, illustrative art, or figure drawing. It is a record of an important aspect of the development of modern medicine and surgery. It is lavishly illustrated and will be a handsome production with a slip case, thus it should have amarket amongst collectors of fine art and members of the medical profession.

Starting with the groundbreaking drawings of Leonardo da Vinci - who was, uniquely, both a great artist and a great scientist - these anatomical illustrations developed into an important art form, one that contributed to the maturation of both art and science." Excerpt from History and Bibliography of Anatomic Illustration: In Its Relation to Anatomic Science and the Graphic Arts The purpose of this book is a presentation of the history and the bibliography of representations of human anatomy by graphic means. Due consideration has been given both to anatomic illustration and to representations belonging to the graphic or plastic arts. For a satisfactory attainment of his purpose, the author will first present a brief historical introduction (pp. 22 to 41), which will be followed by explanatory sections (pp. 42 to 357), in order to avoid crowding the introduction with confusing details. The historic character of the work necessarily set a certain time-limit to both lines of consideration, to the scientific as well as to the artistic. The earlier period of anatomic illustrations ends with Soemmerring and Mascagni. With increasing needs, a new era sets in, differing from the preceding one in its conception of the graphic arts and in the use of new tools and means of reproduction. The development of histologic and microscopic anatomy, the employment of lithography, steel engraving, the daguerreotype, the modern woodcut, and other graphic means, all brought about manifold changes in the methods of anatomic representation. This epoch has no place within the domain of historic research, but has to do rather with a critical appreciation of the literary demands and resources of the present time and of modern science. For this reason the treatment of the subject concludes with the two anatomists above mentioned, adding only the two most important collective works of a later time, those of Loder and Caldani, which were necessarily characteristic of the former period, since they presented only material belonging to it. As regards illustration for the needs of the graphic and plastic arts, that is, in behalf of artistic anatomy, some of their different historic epochs occur earlier and are duly pointed out. At the time of the above-mentioned conclusion of an epoch in scientific anatomy there is no noticeable falling off in illustrations in aid of artistic anatomy. It became necessary, therefore, to enumerate all anatomic illustrations for the use of artists up to the present time, which has been done. Besides this limitation of the periods of time within which this work was to be confined, a careful selection of appropriate material was no less necessary.
