A delightful journey through the history of bird illustration (BI), from ancient Egypt through to the modern day. This volume is beautifully illustrated with the work of the most talented artists and ornithologists of their time, with over 100 plates reproduced in their original color. Lambourne is a descendant of the publisher John Gould, a central figure in the story of BI. She traces the varying inspirations behind the artists -- from the tomb painters of ancient Egypt, whose wildfowl were painted to sustain the dead -- to the scientific curiosity of the 19th-century explorers. She also explains the impact of ornithological discoveries and the develop. of materials and printing techniques on the art. Many of the plates are from galleries and lib. otherwise inaccessible to the gen. public.

The Art Of The Bird written by Roger J. Lederer and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-09-25 with Nature categories.

The human history of depicting birds dates to as many as 40,000 years ago, when Paleolithic artists took to cave walls to capture winged and other beasts. But the art form has reached its peak in the last four hundred years. In The Art of the Bird, devout birder and ornithologist Roger J. Lederer celebrates this heyday of avian illustration in forty artists’ profiles, beginning with the work of Flemish painter Frans Snyders in the early 1600s and continuing through to contemporary artists like Elizabeth Butterworth, famed for her portraits of macaws. Stretching its wings across time, taxa, geography, and artistic style—from the celebrated realism of American conservation icon John James Audubon, to Elizabeth Gould’s nineteenth-century renderings of museum specimens from the Himalayas, to Swedish artist and ornithologist Lars Jonsson’s ethereal watercolors—this book is feathered with art and artists as diverse and beautiful as their subjects. A soaring exploration of our fascination with the avian form, The Art of the Bird is a testament to the ways in which the intense observation inherent in both art and science reveals the mysteries of the natural world.

Birds are much admired, revered and envied. They have featured in art for many thousands of years and our fascination with them continues. They do though pose a challenge to paint and are not always the most cooperative of models. This practical book explains in detail how to go about drawing and painting birds. By understanding their anatomy and recognising their type, the artist can learn a shorthand way to capture movement and attitude. With technique and colour mastered, style develops and a special scene can be captured uniquely forever. In this book, Tim Wootton explains bird types and how identifying specific similarities can help the artist; advises on painting in the field, using photographs and working in the studio; describes how to paint plumage and birds in flight; demonstrates how to compose a painting with emphasis on the birds' habitat; and gives insights into painting birds from 30 leading artists, as well as illustrations of their work, including John Busby, Robert Bateman and Charles Tuncliffe. Beautifully illustrated with 423 colour illustrations.

The Quintessential Bird written by Viola Temple Watts and has been published by National Library Australia this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011 with Art categories.

Betty Temple Watts (1901-1992) developed an interest in birds in her early married life while living in Iran and Papua New Guinea. Although she had studied art formally as a nineteen year old, it was not until she was 48, and settled in Melbourne, that she decided to immerse herself in her bird art.Betty spent much of her time practising drawing, but was constantly critical of the results. In spite of her harsh selfjudgement, others had a high opinion of her skill and, in 1952, she received her first commission, going on to provide bird illustrations for numerous publications until she was in her late eighties. The Quintessential Bird allows readers a glimpse into Betty's joyous world of birds. This is followed by the plates, reproduced in full along with 60 close-ups of individual birds.
