The practice of ceremony offers ways to build relationships between the land and its beings, reflecting change while drawing upon deep relationships going back millennia. Ceremony may involve intricate and spectacular regalia but may also involve simple tools, such as a plastic bucket for harvesting huckleberries or a river rock that holds heat for sweat. The Art of Ceremony provides a contemporary and historical overview of the nine federally recognized tribes in Oregon, through rich conversations with tribal representatives who convey their commitments to ceremonial practices and the inseparable need to renew language, art, ecological systems, kinship relations, and political and legal sovereignty. Vivid photographs illuminate the ties between land and people at the heart of such practice, and each chapter features specific ceremonies chosen by tribal co-collaborators, such as the Siletz Nee Dosh (Feather Dance), the huckleberry gathering of the Cow Creek Umpqua, and the Klamath Return of C?waam (sucker fish) Ceremony. Part of a larger global story of Indigenous rights and cultural resurgence in the twenty-first century, The Art of Ceremony celebrates the power of Indigenous renewal, sustainable connection to the land, and the ethics of responsibility and reciprocity between the earth and all its inhabitants.

Since turning to the field of Jewish art over twenty years ago, Vivian Mann has concentrated on investigating Jewish ceremonial art within the dual contexts of Jewish law, and the history of decorative arts in general, including the ceremonial art made for the Church and the Mosque. The introduction to this volume considers classic rabbinic attitudes toward art and its relationship to spirituality. The remaining essays are divided into three groups: the first concerns medieval ceremonial art; the second, articles on the Jewish art of Muslim lands beginning with the early Middle Ages; and the third consists of essays on Judaica during the periods of the Renaissance and rococo.

4e de couverture: The Sepik River region of Papua New Guinea has long been recognised as one of the great art-producing areas of the tribal world. Exploiting to the full the technical and aesthetic possibilities of natural materials such as wood, clay, bone and feathers, craftsmen living in villages scattered along the Sepik and its tributaries have created masks, wood carvings and paintings that are not only distinctive and compelling in their imagery, but have had a decisive impact on modern western art. And yet, despite nearly a century of European contact, remarkably little of anthropological significance is known about the visual art from this region. Dr. Bowden's book makes a major contribution to our understanding of Sepik art by offering a detailed ethnographic description and analysis of one of the region's most well-known forms of sculpture: the wood carvings that are manufactured for and displayed during the Kwoma yena ceremony, a ritual associated with the harvesting of yams. In addition to describing the social background to the art, and its ceremonial setting, the author provides an interpretation of the symbolism of the sculpture by drawing on myth, world view and values as they are expressed in everyday behaviour, and gives a consice account of all of the other major forms of Kwoma art.

The Art of Chabana is devoted to the exquisite art of Japanese flower arranging for the tea ceremony. Chabana is a simple arrangement of floral or other plant material traditionally placed in the tokonoma, or alcove, of the room in which the tea ceremony is performed. There are no rules in arranging Chabana, the author tells us, no special measurements or geometric patterns, Rather, the creator of a Chabana must use his imagination and, most of all, a special inspiration from within. The author gives practical flower arranging guidelines and discusses in length more than 100 flowers that are suitable for Chabana, explaining exactly how they can be used and the most appropriate seasons for their display. The book includes a complete list of plants with names in English, Japanese, and Latin.
