Here are the striking paintings of artist Rita Deanin Abbey, juxtaposed against natural earth formations photographed by G. William Fiero, and in the often poetic text which accompanies the visual and intellectual awakening they express, is the answer. Images that emerge in the art from an intuitive creative process reflect a close connection to existing forms in nature. The artist brings her perceptions to the task of creating a unified composition out of the limitless number of elements at her disposal. The geologist, trained as a scientist to divide into segments all he perceives, finds the desert a perfect setting for inquiry-- by understanding the pieces he hopes to gain knowledge of its overall composition. This unique fusion of art and science has produced an original, challenging , and supremely stimulating book-- a book which provides a new way of looking at the earth upon which we live -- Back cover.

Despite the modern dominance of computer graphics programs and digital cameras, the ability todraw geological structures manually remains a necessity in academic geology and beyond. Drawings serve for quick and simple documentation in the field or at the microscope. They can be applied as a language of their own as well as be adapted to suit specific requirements. Moreover, geological drawing improves observational ability and contributes to the understanding of geological structures and structure-forming processes. Geological drawing is assisted scientific thinking. Drawing Geological Structures provides undergraduate as well as graduate and practicing geologists with a thorough, step-by-step practical guide to the art of geological drawing. Beginning with the basics, the book covers thin sections, sample sections, samples and geological stereograms. The chapters provide examples of how drawings evolve and are complemented by exercises, allowing the reader to practice their drawing prior to going out into the field or working at the microscope. Users of this unique guide will develop their knowledge and technical vocabulary whilst also improving their drawing skills.

New Haven S Sentinels written by Jelle Zeilinga de Boer and has been published by Wesleyan University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-07-19 with Art categories.

West Rock and East Rock are bold and beautiful features around New Haven, Connecticut. They resemble monumental gateways (or time-tried sentinels) and represent a moment in geologic time when the North American and African continents began to separate and volcanism affected much of Connecticut. The rocks attracted the attention of poets, painters, and naturalists when beliefs rose about the spiritual dimensions of nature in the early 19th century. More than two dozen artists, including Frederick Church, George Durrie, and John Weir, captured their magic and produced an assortment of classic American landscapes. In the same period, the science of geology evolved rapidly, triggered by the controversy between proponents and opponents of biblical explanations for the origin of rocks. Lavishly illustrated, featuring over sixty paintings and prints, this book is a perfect introduction to understanding the relationship of geology and art. It will delight those who appreciate landscape painting, and anyone who has seen the grandeur of East and West Rock.

Geoscience Information written by A.P. Harvey and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Science categories.

The International Conference on Geological Information represents the first major attempt to bring together geoscience information specialists from allover the world. The purpose of the conference was to assess the current state-of the-art in geoscience information from both the regional and functional point of view. It was hoped that the conference could take steps to bring about increased international cooperation and collaboration in the field of geological information. The papers ranged over the whole spec trum of documentation from primary publishing back to the user, including data. Perhaps a keyword for the conference might be "cooperation". The idea of, and need for, cooperation was stressed in almost every talk. The final panel session was devoted to a discussion on the formation of a proposed International Association for Geological Information. Despite the growing pressure on information managers, stimulated by increasing international activities in geology, the global perspective of plate tectonics and worldwide concern for the availability of non-renewable resources, there does not exist an international organisation specifi cally concerned with geological information. Delegates agreed that there was no need for a new professional society of individuals but that a federation or similar organisation might be desirable. In the final session it became apparent that if the geological information community is to make the best use of all the systems and developments available there is very clearly a need to know what exists in all these areas at present. An urgent task is to identify these systems.

Excerpt from Economic Geology: Or Geology in Its Relations to the Arts and Manufactures In the next place, take the case of the Civil engineer who has to plan and lay down roads and railways, to execute cuttings and tunnels, to excavate docks and harbours, to erect piers and breakwaters, to deepen and widen tidal rivers, and bring in water-supplies to towns. Not a step can be taken in any of these important Operations without coming in contact with geological phenomena - not a plan can he lay down which does not depend more or less on a knowledge of rocks and rock-formations. It is true he may obtain information from geological maps and from professional geologists; but, even with this aid, his work will be executed with feebleness and uncertainty compared with that of one who can discriminate the geological structure of a country for himself. And it has simply been, and still is, for want Of this geological knowledge that so many of our engineering works have been executed at so much cost and with so little pecuniary satisfaction to their proprietors.
