This book examines the archival aesthetic of mourning and memory developed by Latin American artists and photographers between 1997-2016. Particular attention is paid to how photographs of the assassinated or disappeared political dissident of the 1970s and 1980s, as found in family albums and in official archives, were not only re-imagined as conduits for private mourning, but also became allegories of social trauma and the struggle against socio-political amnesia. Memorials, art installations, photo-essays, street projections, and documentary films are all considered as media for the reframing of these archival images from the era of the Cold War dictatorships in Argentina, Chile, Guatemala, and Uruguay. While the turn of the millennium was supposedly marked by “the end of history” and, with the advent of digital technologies, by “the end of photography,” these works served to interrupt and hence, belie the dominant narrative on both counts. Indeed, the book's overarching contention is that the viewer’s affective identification with distant suffering when engaging these artworks is equally interrupted: instead, the viewer is invited to apprehend memorial images as emblems of national and international histories of ideological struggle.

Addressing the relationship between law and the visual, this book examines the importance of photography in Central, East, and Southeast European show trials. The dispensation of justice during communist rule in Albania, East Germany, and Poland was reliant on legal propaganda, making the visual a fundamental part of the legitimacy of the law. Analysing photographs of trials, this book examines how this message was conveyed to audiences watching and participating in the spectacle of show trials. The book traces how this use of the visual was exported from the Soviet Union and imposed upon its satellite states in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War. It shows how the legal actors and political authorities embraced new photographic technologies to advance their legal propaganda and legal photography. Drawing on contemporary theoretical work in the area, the book then challenges straightforward accounts of the relationship between law and the visual, critically engaging entrenched legal historical narratives, in relation to three different protagonists, to offer the possibility of reclaiming and rewriting past accounts. As its analysis demonstrates, the power of images can also be subversive; and, as such, the cases it addresses contribute to the discourse on visual epistemology and open onto contemporary questions about law and its inherent performativity. "Overcoming Dictatorships explores art produced in response to the collapse of political authoritarian systems in 1989, particularly those of the Soviet bloc. A case in point is the visual work and discussions of ten artists who have bean selected and commissioned by 'Overcoming Dictatorships', a 2006-09 project generously funded by the European Union (EU). It aims to create a dialogue on post-dictatorial experiences among participants from countries designated as 'East' and 'West' Europe. Their works represent attempts to overcome collective identity formations of the past (i.e. the Soviet bloc, National Socialism and Fascism), critically engage with the fear of new dictatorships (including consumerism, globalization and mass media) and question 'western' political and social-economic uniformities (including the EU). Hence Overcoming Dictatorships challenges compartmentalized thinking and thus attempts to overcome authoritarianism.
