Excerpt from The Art of Reading Latin: How to Teach It The method of teaching herein advocated started, many years ago, from a desire to know Latin literature, and an impatience with the actual amount of reading power attained by a college course. At the outset there existed a conviction that the modern mind could not be so degenerate as to be incapable of reading Latin as Romans read it, that is to say, in the Roman order, in the Roman medium, and at a rate of speed which would not be intolerably slow in the reading of a modern tongue. The nature of the aim dictated the method to be employed; and the employment of the method proved the soundness of the original conviction. The writer has for some years intended to publish an account of this method, as it has shaped itself in practical experience with successive classes. First, however, he desired to present it orally before a number of gatherings of teachers. As a beginning, accordingly, the address with which the pamphlet opens was read before the Holiday Conference of the Associated Academic Principals of the State of New York, held in Syracuse in December last. Excerpt from Latin Reader: Nature Study and Easy Stories for Sight Reading During the First Year in Latin During the first year pupils must form the habit of reading Latin. If we had the material, they might learn to read Latin as they learned to read English, by reading. What can be done to get this material? Of what should this material consist? We are preparing them to read authors. Our own experience has often shown us that the first few pages of a new book seem difficult usually the most difficult of the whole book and so much so that we might say of many books: Well begun is half done. The majority of pupils who read much Latin, read Caesar, Cicero, and Vergil. Their first attack upon each of these authors is nearly always made upon the first pages of the Gallic War, Book I or Book II, the First Oration against Catiline, and the First Book of the Eneid. Their reading during the first year can be made to contain every important word and every form and construction occurring in those few pages. During the first year's work, students of Latin are obliged to read hun dreds and even thousands of sentences illustrating Latin forms and syntax. Those sentences are for the most part fragments of the sentences of Caesar and other Latin authors and are usually arranged so as to illustrate and review the use of certain constructions with regularity and precision. Excerpt from Latin at Sight: With an Introduction, Suggestions for Sight-Reading, and Selections for Practice This little book is an outgrowth of a teacher's attempt J to teach Latin. The greater part of it was prepared in 1886, but any further attention to it was precluded by a prolonged absence from America. The Introduction is intended for teachers rather than for pupils. No attempt has been made to divide the book into Lessons, but it is believed that the running catch-words will facilitate its use. The grammar references are to the books of Allen and Greenough (abbreviated A. And Gildersleeve and Harkness (hm) It goes without saying that these pages are not so much intended for persons who can read Latin as for those who desire to learn how to do so, -both for such as have, after a considerable expenditure of toil and patience, thus far failed to learn, and for those who are more fortunate in that they have not yet tried and failed. The second part on How to Read is followed by about one hundred and eighty Selections for Practice. Some attempt has been made to graduate these Selections.
