Excerpt from Right Living: Lessons in Ethics for Schools Emerson says Character is the most valuable pos session and acquisition of life. Higher than intellect, and a great soul will be strong to live, as well as to think. Moral stature is acquired by an inward growth or development of character. Aided by such precepts and examples as we have been fortunate enough. To obtain, through the ministrations of others, and by our own efforts and observations. Excerpt from Rules for Right Living and Right Conduct: From the Teachings of Jesus the Christ In the education of our children we very wisely take great pains to give them rules - rules to apply to their mathematics, their grammar, composition, rhetoric, etc. Later, some will be taught rules for engineering, for surveying, for navigation, or for whatever occupation they may choose. But hitherto we have set these children adrift on the great ocean of existence without giving them any rules for living, or for the conduct of life. We give them neither rudder nor compass by which to steer their ship of life across the stormy waters of this world; neither map nor chart to enable them to avoid ship-wreck and to reach in safety the shore of the great Hereafter. And yet, we wonder that so much character is hopelessly ship-wrecked! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Art of Living: And Other Addresses to Girls To undertake to speak of the art of living suggests a difficulty at the very outset. Ought there, in truth, to be any art in right living? Must it not be spontaneous, the mere unconscious self-expression of a beautiful nature? It is to the child, blessed with perfect health, living in an atmosphere of freedom, that we turn when we wish to see the supreme example of the art of living. We love to watch him because he is so natural, so absolutely simple, because what he expresses is himself, himself shown to us without any thought, without any self-consciousness. This is what gives him his charm of character, his grace of action. How can there be an art of living when the beauty of living seems to lie in its very absence of art? But reflection shows that childhood cannot last. Its grace, its spontaneous charm is too often followed by a period of awkwardness in mind and morals as well as in body, a condition generally spoken of as self-consciousness. So used, the epithet self-conscious is one of reproach. But in philosophical language self-consciousness is necessary to the development of character. The individual must become conscious of himself; he must realise self in his relations to things outside himself, to men, to God. He must take count of self, of his powers, of his limitations, so that he may be master of his own career, of his own inner life. This phase of human development is naturally attended by its own particular perils. It no doubt frequently leads to that unpleasant condition described in ordinary language as self-consciousness. Excerpt from As a Girl Thinketh: A Study in Right Living There is a loud cry today for education in citizen ship. To many this means merely knowledge of government - city, county, state, country. To me it means much more - the learning to live with a full ness and appreciation in co-operation with others, that casts out selfishness and greed. It means an_ education in correct values - the value of knowl edge, beauty, personality, ideas, and material things. It means a learning to understand how to supply the inherent wants of man for health, wealth, knowl edge, beauty, companionship, and rightness of liv ing with a fairness to oneself and to others. Such an interpretation of citizenship requires the attitude of mind that we are citizens already, and that we are learning to live by living. F or this reason I have made this little book. The material herein presented, together with the queries and outside reading, is simply suggestive of topics for discussion. The best literature of today is full of the problems of living in one phase or another of society, and the girl who thinks is the one who leads and succeeds.
