The Arts And Architecture Of German Settlements In Missouri written by Charles Van Ravenswaay and has been published by University of Missouri Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006 with Architecture categories.

Many Germans who immigrated to America in the nineteenth century settled in the lower Missouri River valley between St. Charles and Boonville, Missouri. In this magnificent book, which includes some six hundred photographs and drawings, Charles van Ravenswaay examines that immigration--who came, how, and why--and surveys the distinctive Missouri-German architecture, art, and crafts produced in the towns or on the farms of the rural counties of Cooper, Cole, Osage, Gasconade, Franklin, Montgomery, Warren, and St. Charles from the 1830s until the closing years of the century. As the immigrants sought to transplant their native culture to the Missouri backwoods, the compromises they were forced to make with conditions in Missouri produced many fascinating and individualistic structures and objects. They built half-timbered, stone, and brick houses and barns with designs reflecting the traditions of the many German regions from which the builders emigrated. The author's far-reaching study of immigrants' arts and crafts included furniture in traditional peasant designs as well as the Biedermeier and eclectic styles, redware and stoneware pottery, textiles, wood and stone carving, metalwares, firearms, baskets, musical instruments, prints, and paintings and identifies craftsmen working in all of these fields. One chapter is devoted to the objects the immigrants brought with them from the Old World. Added to this new printing of The Arts and Architecture of German Settlements in Missouri is a touching and informative introduction by Adolf E. Schroeder. Schroeder's long friendship with Charles van Ravenswaay allows him to reflect on the vast contributions this author made to our knowledge of Missouri's German culture. Everyone interested in architecture, crafts, or Missouriana will find this book indispensable as they savor van Ravenswaay's excellent presentation of the craftsmen and their products against the background of the aspirations and folkways of a distinctive culture.

Excerpt from Handbook of Settlements The Handbook is designed to continue the service rendered by the Bibliography of Settlements which was published in a succession of editions up to 1905 by the College Settlements Association. The typical settlement, under American conditions, is one which provides neutral territory traversing all the lines of racial and religious cleavage. The house which is wholly unsectarian not only from the point of view of its staff, but as judged by the various elements in its neighborhood, represents the main action of the kind of social enter prise here set forth. Nevertheless, it is clear that there is a considerable number of houses having a high degree of the settlement spirit while including some of the functions distinctive of a particular smaller or larger division of the church. Where such specific religious effort is conducted without willing or conscious invasion of other religious loyalties, it has not been construed as carrying the house in question beyond the distinctive limits of the settlement field. The nature of the religious affiliation of such houses is in all cases clearly indicated; and for the larger cities they are placed in a list by themselves. The Settlement Of International Cultural Heritage Disputes written by Alessandro Chechi and has been published by OUP Oxford this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-03-13 with Law categories.

The past forty years have seen a wide proliferation of disputes under international law concerning cultural heritage. These have included the restitution of stolen art objects or the protection of monuments. Unlike other fields of international law, international cultural heritage law does not have an ad hoc mechanism of dispute settlement. As a result, controversies are to be settled through negotiation or, if it fails, through existing dispute resolution means. This can result in similar cases being settled in different ways, thereby bringing about an incoherent and fragmentary enforcement of the law. This book offers a comprehensive and innovative analysis of the settlement of cultural heritage disputes. This examination is two-fold. First, it assesses the existing legal framework and the available dispute settlement means. Second, it explores the feasibility of two solutions for overcoming the lack of a specialized forum. The first is the establishment of a new international court. The second concerns existing judicial and extra-judicial fora and their interaction through the practice of 'cross-fertilization'. The book focuses on the substance of such interaction, and identifies a number of culturally-sensitive parameters (the 'common rules of adjudication'). It argues that existing judicial and non-judicial fora should adopt a cross-fertilizing perspective to use and disseminate jurisprudence containing these common rules of adjudication. It sets out how such an approach would enhance the effectiveness and coherence of decision-making processes and would be conducive to the development of a lex culturalis. This can be defined as a composite body of rules designed to protect cultural heritage by excluding the mechanical application of the norms established for standard business transactions of ordinary goods.

In dealing with each question, territorial, racial, colonial, economic or political, I have en deavoured to bring it to this test - what solution will make most surely for the stability and security of the European Society At the same time, I have kept in mind the necessity for subordinating theories to facts and I have sought to deal with each problem in the light of practical politics, of the conditions which actually exist, even where this involved the rejection of schemes theoretically preferable. An Account Of The British Settlement Of Aden In Arabia written by Frederick Mercer Hunter and has been published by Gale and the British Library this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1877 with History categories.

Excerpt from An Account of the British Settlement of Aden in Arabia The following monograph has been prepared at the request of Dr. W. W. Hunter, Director-General of Statistics to the Government of India, and so far as the local circumstances of Aden permitted, upon the general plan drawn up by him for all India. Since the publication of the History of Yemen by Captain Playfair in 1859, no account of the Settlement of Aden, beyond the yearly Administration Reports, has been written, and it is hoped that this compilation will be found useful if not interesting. Several subjects have been treated very cursorily owing to the absence of reliable data, but this very incompleteness will serve a purpose, if thereby the investigation be induced of matters which have been briefly or imperfectly noticed. Several officers and gentlemen have afforded assistance in collecting materials, and it is desired here to fully recognise the obligation due to them for their valuable co-operation. The compilation has been prepared in the intervals of current duties, and it is entirely due to the consideration shown the compiler by Brigadier-General Schneider, the Political Resident, that any measure of success has been attained. The work has been divided into six parts, and it may not be amiss to say a few words regarding each. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
