Our staff has thoroughly reviewed every page of all the books in the collection, repairing, or if necessary, rejecting titles that are not of the highest quality. This process ensures that the reader of one of Trieste Publishing's titles receives a volume that faithfully reproduces the original, and to the maximum degree possible, gives them the experience of owning the original work.We pride ourselves on not only creating a pathway to an extensive reservoir of books of the finest quality, but also providing value to every one of our readers. Excerpt from The Art of Study: A Manual for Teachers and Students of the Science The ultimate object of this book is to place the Art of Study as a tool or instrument in the hands of pupils and students in schools. But as this object can be reached only by way of the teachers, the book is primarily addressed to them, and to students of the science and the art of teaching. It is, therefore, plainly necessary in the first place to demonstrate the relations that should exist between the pupil and the teacher in the school, and then to present practical methods by which the teacher may establish and maintain such relations. Only through these means can the grand end be reached. The book, it will be seen, proposes a partial readjustment of the relations existing between the pupil and the teacher. In other words, it proposes to effect a partial shifting of the center of gravity in the school, by making the pupil the center of the system and placing the teacher in his proper orbit. It would have been easy greatly to multiply the parallel readings accompanying the chapters, but my observation is that in such a case a small but well-chosen bibliography is better than a large one. The Art of Teaching Science has proven itself to be one of the most popular introductory texts for Australian pre-service and in-service teachers, providing guidance on engaging students and helping develop scientifically literate citizens. Beginning with an examination of the nature of science, constructivist and socio-cultural views of teaching and learning and contemporary science curricula in Australian schools, the expert authors go on to explore effective teaching and learning strategies, approaches to assessment and provide advice on the use of ICT in the classroom. Fully revised and updated, this edition also reflects the introduction of the AITSL professional standards for teachers and integrates them throughout the text. New chapters explore: •a range of teaching strategies including explicit instruction, active learning and problem-based learning; •the effective integration of STEM in schools; •approaches to differentiation in science education; and •contemporary uses of ICT to improve student learning. Those new to this text will find it is deliberately written in user-friendly language. Each chapter stands alone, but collectively they form a coherent picture of the art (in the sense of creative craft) and science (as in possessing the knowledge, understanding and skills) required to effectively teach secondary school science. 'Helping each new generation of school science teachers as they begin their careers is crucial to education. This is the updated, third edition of this valuable textbook. It contains a wonderful range of inspirational chapters. All science teachers, not only those at the start of the profession, would benefit from it, in Australia and beyond.' Michael J. Reiss, Professor of Science Education, University College, London

Excerpt from The Science and Art of Teaching: Or, the Principles and Practice of Education Our design in preparing the following work was to furnish Student-Teachers, and others engaged in education, with a Manual containing a comprehensive resume, within a moderate compass, of all the more important principles and details of their Profession. In the execution of this task we have endeavoured to combine brevity with clearness, so that our mode of expression might be as simple and direct as was consistent with the nature of the subject. Several of the succeeding chapters have appeared from time to time in the English and Irish Educational Papers, some in the American Educational Monthly, and some in the Ontario Journal of Education. Those published in the old country, having secured the kind commendations of the London press, were reproduced in the Journal of Education for the Province of Victoria (Australia) and received with much favour by our fellow-labourers in the antipodes. These chapters (with others which appear in print for the first time) are now presented in book form, with the hope that they may to some extent fill a place, hitherto void, in our native educational literature, and thereby help to promote the interests of the young by reflecting mental light and youthful happiness into some of the darker and less attractive shades of the school-room. In years to come we hope to see the prejudices and moral weaknesses of present educational systems supplanted by the reign of light, love, and intelligence; so that children, at home and abroad, may be emancipated from the thraldom of fear, and educated according to the teachings of Nature and the laws of their being.
