Excerpt from The Art of Teaching and Studying Languages Mankind has long passed from the stage in which speech is used for the mere expression of physical facts and desires, to that in which language is employed as the highest tool within the grasp to paint the pictures of poetic imagination, and sway a world-wide audience to noble thoughts and deeds. Not only to satisfy the necessities of travellers in far countries has the study of language been ever desirable, but to penetrate the spirit and genius of Homer, Virgil, Shakespeare, Goethe, Hugo, Dante, it has become, to the cultured of every country, a necessity for the full gift of a liberal education. Since language became literature, the necessity for the mastery over other tongues than his own has forced the attention of student and of professor to the problem of the study of languages and the great intellectual value of a complete and logical system for the mastery of tongues, if such could be found, is so apparent, that the greatest honour has always been awarded to discoverers in this region, which is still felt, however, to be to a large extent unexplored, or at least unconquered.. Excerpt from The Profession of Teaching The plan and purpose of this discussion of the profession of teaching, though simple and clear, treats the subject from a somewhat unusual point of view and hence requires a few words of explanation. Some time ago, in a discussion between a well-known attorney and an educator, the former emphatically asserted that there was no such thing as a profession of teaching, and that there could not be with the present American system of education. This statement, though backed by many strong arguments, did not shake the firm belief of the representative of that same educational system, that teaching is as truly a profession as any of those occupations that are indisputably classed as such. A desire to establish his conviction and to secure unquestionable proof of its correctness led to a general analysis of vocations with the particular object of discovering the nature and characteristics of a profession and of determining the requirements for becoming a worthy member of it. The first chapter of this book is the direct outgrowth of that study. A further study of the particular requirements which the profession of teaching makes upon those who wish to be teachers in a truly professional sense has resulted in the conclusions set forth in the succeeding chapters. It is evident that the demands which the larger idea of education makes upon the teacher cannot be met without a clear understanding on his part of these demands and the means to be employed in meeting them. Excerpt from How to Teach The art of teaching is based primarily upon the science of psychology. In this book the authors have sought to make clear the principles of psychology which are involved in teaching, and to show definitely their application in the work of the classroom. The book has been written in language as free from technical terms as is possible. In a discussion of the methods of teaching it is necessary to consider the ends or aims involved, as well as the process. The authors have, on this account, included a chapter on the work of the teacher, in which is discussed the aims of education. The success or failure of the work of a teacher is determined by the changes which are brought to pass in the children who are being taught. This book, therefore, includes a chapter on the measurement of the achievements of children. Throughout the book the discussion of the art of teaching is always modified by an acceptance upon the part of the writers of the social purpose of education. The treatment of each topic will be found to be based upon investigations and researches in the fields of psychology and education which involve the measurement of the achievements of children and of adults under varying conditions. Wherever possible, the relation between the principle of teaching laid down and the scientific inquiry upon which it is based is indicated. Any careful study of the mental life and development of children reveals at the same time the unity and the diversity of the process involved.
