Flowering plants always make your garden look more exciting (and can stop neighbors in their tracks). Perennials can dazzle year after year, while annuals can add blooms almost instantly. You can start planting a flower garden with seeds or pick up transplants at the garden center, but once you've chosen your plants, there are a few basic steps to get your flowers off to a good start in your yard. First, before you start digging, read the tag that comes with your plants or the instructions on your packets of seeds so you can match the plants' needs with the best spots to grow them. Then, if you already have established flower beds, you can easily place new annuals or perennials wherever you need to fill in some holes. Or you can always create a new flower bed to fill with all the beautiful blooms you want to grow. Your best bet is to start small your first year, and don't worry about making mistakes. As time goes on, you can adjust your garden, digging up what didn't work on year and embracing what did well. You'll find a garden style and plants that make you happy, and the discovery of what exactly that is can be an unexpected pleasure. This book “FLOWER GARDENING FOR BEGINNERS” contains everything you need to know about starting your own flower garden to becoming a master in the art of growing flowers. GET YOUR COPY TODAY

Excerpt from The Making of a Flower Garden A beautiful arrangement of the planting would be to run a triple row of tulips, hyacinths or narcissi along the edges of all the beds and sow English daisy seed, pansies, ageratums or other low-growing plants among them to cover the ground when they are through blooming. On the less sunny borders the lobelias would be beautiful, as would the dwarf morn ing glories which remain open all day. The tufted pansies are permanent and beautiful border plants, especially the yellow ones, and one can compose very artistic color schemes by using flowers that harmonize with the edging plants in the different beds. Excerpt from Flowers and the Flower Garden: With Instructions on the Culture of Ornamental Trees, Shrubs, &C The Pleasure Garden, in all its various forms, can scarcely fail to be the delight, the occupation, the pride, the glory of the English gentlewoman. It is work for the idle and recreation for the busy. Whatever our station renders desirable in either shape we may get among flowers, trees, and shrubs; and there all the good qualities so paramount in the women of England find scope. A well cared for garden displays - and displays to good advantage too - the love of home, domestic taste, a wish to please, industry, neatness, taste, and all the sweet household virtues that create home where-ever good women rule, and that make Englishmen, when blessed with such as wives or relatives, so fond of it and of them. Excerpt from Flowers and the Flower Garden: With Instructions on the Culture of Ornamental Trees, Shrubs, &C One great merit in horticulture is, that it confines itself to no rank, and that it may form the amusement or the pursuit alike of great and small, rich and poor; only, the kind of garden we choose, what we do with the land which we have at command, must depend on those extraneous circumstances to which we all have to submit. Excerpt from The English Flower Garden and Home Grounds: Design and Arrangement Followed by a Description of the Plants, Shrubs and Tress for the Open-Air Garden and Their Culture This book is the muster of various once forlorn hopes and skirmishing parties now united with better arms and larger aims, and its beginnings may have an interest for others. I came to London just when the Royal Horticultural Society's garden at Kensington was being laid out, a series of elaborate patterns set at different levels, and the Crystal Palace, in its glory, was described by the Press of the day to be the most wonderful instance of modern gardening - water-temples, water-paths, vast stone basins and all the theatrical gardening of Versailles reproduced in Surrey. There was little or no reason admitted into garden design: the same poor imitation of the Italian garden being set down in all sorts of positions. If the place did not suit the style, the ground had to be bolstered up in some way so that the plan might be carried out - a costly way to get an often ridiculous result. The great writers of the past had laughed the carpenters rule out of the parks of England, and pictures arose where they were once impossible; but the ugliness of the garden about the house was assumed to be an essential part of the thing itself, removing that for ever from the sympathies of artistic people. The flower garden planting was made up of a few kinds of flowers which people were proud to put out in thousands and tens of thousands, and with these, patterns, more or less elaborate, were carried out in every garden save the very poorest cottage garden. Excerpt from The English Flower Garden: With Illustrative Notes It is just a year ago since this Essay on "The English Flower Garden" was published in the Quarterly Review. It was written with a twofold object: to give in the smallest compass an outline history of English gardens, and to show once again what makes the true charm and happiness of a garden. Many - perhaps too partial - friends have urged me to reprint this article. They have reminded me that, when the immediate circulation of any one number of a Review has ceased, its articles are virtually lost and buried, and they assure me that there are readers who may not have already seen, and who would yet care to read, this Essay.
