This book provides an innovative analysis of the conditions of ancient Egyptian craftsmanship in the light of the archaeology of production, linguistic analysis, visual representation and ethnographic research. During the past decades, the "imaginative" figure of ancient Egyptian material producers has moved from "workers" to "artisans" and, most recently, to "artists". In a search for a fuller understanding of the pragmatics of material production in past societies, and moving away from a series of modern preconceptions, this volume aims to analyse the mechanisms of material production in Egypt during the Middle Bronze Age (2000-1550 BC), to approach the profile of ancient Egyptian craftsmen through their own words, images and artefacts, and to trace possible modes of circulation of ideas among craftsmen in material production. The studies in the volume address the mechanisms of ancient production in Middle Bronze Age Egypt, the circulation of ideas among craftsmen, and the profiles of the people involved, based on the material traces, including depictions and writings, the ancient craftsmen themselves left and produced.

From the beginning of Egyptian dynastic history (c. 3000 BC), Egyptian artists worked within a set of specific rules for image making. The system was established in order to depict and to justify the ambitions of the ancient Egyptian elite, and was so successful that virtually no other forms of image making survive in the archaeological record. This book describes the rules for making correct canonical images at the levels of technique and subject matter, and explores the way in which these rules were expressed and transmitted from artist to artist over 3,000 years. Although it uses up-to-date visual and archaeological data, it presumes no specific knowledge of ancient Egypt and aims to introduce the fundamentals of Egyptian art to readers with general interests in Egyptian art, history and archaeology.

Excerpt from The Arts Crafts of Ancient Egypt This present handbook is intended to aid in the understanding of Egyptian art, and the illustrations and descriptions are selected for that purpose only. The history of the art would require a far greater range of examples, in order to illustrate the growth and decay of each of the great periods; whereas here only the most striking works of each period are shown, in order to contrast the different civilisations. The origins and connections of the art in each age are scarcely touched, and the technical details are only such as are needed to see the conditions of the art. The archaeology of the subject would need as wide a treatment as the history, and these subjects can only appear here incidentally. It should be noticed that the divisions of artistic periods are often not the same as those of political history.
